A Cauldron of Witch Tricks Page 11

Zinnia rubbed her chest through her shirt. “I think that charm you made left a mark.”

“Sorry.” Nann felt a burning sting herself. “Charm’s aren’t my forte.”

Buford approached, giving Nann an appraising look. “I guess you got what you wanted,” Barb said to Nann. Her speech was no longer slurred.

Nann leaned against Cricket. “What is that?”

“The AMN, the town council, they were the real force behind ridding Port Argent of magic. Now, Blake’s dead, Doug’s going down for murder, and Gene Wozniak’s political career is over. Or it will be, once the state and feds start investigating AMN.”

“Nann didn’t want any of that,” Zinnia said. “It sounds more like people got what was coming to them for a bunch of underhanded stuff.”

Nann gave Barb a look. “You did a lot of underhanded stuff, too.”

The real estate agent smiled. “Maybe. But I didn’t get caught.”

“Blake caught you,” Zinnia reminded her.

Buford shrugged. “No need to worry about that anymore.”

“Well, at the very least, I hope you learned a lesson,” Nann said. “I know you’re running for town council. After all this, can we expect a less crooked government around here?”

“No more anti-magic platforms?” Zinnia said.

“No more manipulative real estate schemes?” Nann said. “Or pig-napping?”

Barb gave a speculative frown. “I really should learn a lesson from all this. Run a clean campaign, focus on the real issues. Make this town even better than it is now.”

“That sounds great.” Nann said. The Druid Way, she thought to herself.

With a dismissive gesture, Barb turned toward her car. “Nah. I wouldn’t count on it.”

Zinnia’s features wrinkled in frustration as they watched Barbara Buford drive off. “She’s no better than the rest of them.”

“I guess not,” Nann said. “But what goes around, comes around. One day, she’ll get hers.”

“Hopefully.” Zinnia’s face brightened. “Speaking of which, the murder is solved. You can go on that third date with Keith. Date Number Three. The big one. Maybe you can finally get yours.”

“Hell to the yeah.” Nann put on a serious face. “Why do you think I put so much effort in solving this case? If I left it all up to the cops, neither one of us would have any free time for months.”
