Say You Do

There was so much emotion in Cyrus’s eyes that I nearly cracked, but I also really wanted to say everything I needed to say. “You’re my spring in the middle of winter and my stars on a cloudy night. I love how much we laugh together and how much fun we have together. I love our playfulness and teasing, but I also love knowing that we can be serious together when we have to be.”

“I love that you keep me grounded while letting me soar, that I can come home to you every night and see you smile when I walk in the door.”

Four months after we’d officially started dating, I’d moved in with him. He’d asked every day for two months, and eventually, I had to agree it made sense. At that point, I hadn’t seen the inside of my own apartment for a month and keeping it had become more of a headache and an unnecessary expense than a necessity. Even with the business doing well and dating a billionaire who had offered to buy the place for me, I still refused to waste money.

“I love that you can be silly one minute and serious the next. I promise not to secretly get rid of all your stuff from Bachelors-are-us. I promise to remind you to use the hot tub and to have at least one cup of coffee a week from your fancy machine.”

I squeezed his hands. “I promise to love you unconditionally and that I will still be there even if you lost everything you have tomorrow. I promise not to jump to conclusions when I see you staring at something and promise to always hear you out. I can’t wait to start this new adventure with you, my love. I love you, from now until forever.”

Cyrus had tears tracking down his cheeks, but he didn’t seem to care enough to wipe them away either. Ring boxes appeared, and the officiant asked us to give each other our right hands and repeat after him.

One by one, we took our turn to slide the other’s ring into its new permanent place, and when that was done, Cyrus barely waited for us to be pronounced husband and wife before sweeping me off my feet and dipping me almost all the way to the ground as he kissed me.

Whoops and cheers broke out, but it was all just white noise to me. It was only once Cyrus broke off our kiss when it was becoming somewhat inappropriate that I realized where we were again.

I couldn’t stop crying, smiling, or looking at my new husband. He brought my left hand to his mouth and planted a kiss on the ring. Then he thrust our joined hands into the air victoriously. “Fuck yeah. I’m a happily married man, baby!”

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the officiant said into the microphone to be heard above the din resulting from Cyrus’s exclamation. “May I present to you, for the very first time, Mr. and Mrs. Coning.”

That was the beginning of our happily ever after. Cyrus took me to Greece for our honeymoon after all, just like he’d promised that he would, and ten years, four kids, and a house in the suburbs later, we were very much still living the dream.

  The End.
