Lilith’s mother and father had the same red flecked eyes that she did and her mother had the same obsidian and opal hair. The two of them looked like academics and only incidentally like humanoid demons (if you even knew what to look for). Her father wore a dark corduroy jacket and spectacles with a nice pair of trousers that didn’t quite match and her mother wore a blue suit. They were dressed nice, by their own standards, though they looked like peasants next to the royal fae contingent. But Lilith only felt proud of them.
“We know you’ve been thinking of going on vacation…” Lilith’s father adjusted his glasses and Lilith braced herself.
Ever since her parents had arrived at Brunswick for the graduation, they had not stopped talking about how much they wanted Lilith and Jordan to come visit them for a while before they plotted their next move. But Lilith was exhausted. For a few months before the mission, she just sat around passing the time and waiting for her mission and yet somehow the anticipation and anxiety of waiting for it had also been tiring. That was not to mention the mission itself.
She finally had all the time in the world to get to know everything there was to know about Jordan; her mate, and her true love. She didn’t particularly want to do it in her parents’ house, as much as she did adore them.
“We have,” Lilith said, narrowing her eyes. If it came down to it, she’d have to put her foot down and insist they have some time alone on their own. She knew her parents had missed her and that was sweet. But she wanted Jordan all to herself and her father was about ready to adopt him.
“Well, we were thinking about that,” her mother said. “And we think you’re right. So we’ve bought you two tickets.”
“Tickets?” Lilith said, hope singing up like a hyper little puppy on its hind legs. “Tickets to...where? What? What’s this?”
“Paris!” Her mother said. She reached into her purse and took out two black berets, flinging them at Lilith and Jordan, who blurted a surprised laugh. “I know you’ve always wanted to go there. I’ve just emailed you the tickets actually. You leave tomorrow night. Open ended. We booked you a hotel, it’s supposed to be very swanky. So we just hope you have a good time, darling. We wanted to do something special for you and for Jordan. You two certainly deserve it.”
Lilith couldn’t talk for the lump in her throat and her eyes brimmed. She leaned on Jordan, grabbing his arm. “Mom! Dad, thank you so much.”
“We’re glad you’re pleased,” her dad said. “But I beg you, don’t skip the libraries. Paris has a very impressive underground similar to New York’s and there is a library-”
“I will go to the library!” Lilith said, laughing. Jordan could hardly contain himself as he stifled his laughter and he threw an arm around her, squeezing her tight.
“Thanks,” Jordan said to her parents. “I’ve never been anywhere. And there’s no one I’d rather go anywhere with.”
“That’s how it should be,” her mother said, tossing Lilith a wink. “Oh, do you know, now that they’ve brought the totems together, things are already starting to change?”
Lilith’s ears perked up at that. She had turned in the totem with Jordan just a few days ago, along with all the other girls. There had been an electric sense of anticipation about the whole thing as they’d followed Ms. Friar, Cargenburg and Benjamin to Friar’s office where she took the other totems out of a locked cabinet.
She had never really thought about what would happen when the totems were reunited.
Friar had placed them all on a large stone table in a circle. There was no spell cast. None was needed. Once the totems were together, everyone had felt the intense magic surrounding them and then the totems began to shake and tremble along with the ground under everyone’s feet. Then all the totems had slid across the table and begun to melt into each other, forming one very large totem made of a stone so dense and heavy, none of them had been able to move it. So instead, Friar had moved her office to another room and there the one totem remained, immoveable on its pedestal.
“Yes,” her father said, “there have been changes already in balance of magical forces. More people realizing they have a propensity for magic, long-lost artifacts found, spells once considered uncastable now cast with ease. Things are falling back into place. All thanks to you and the others.”
“All in a day’s work,” Lilith said proudly.
After the banquet was over, the other girls wanted to go out by the lake and show their mates the water. Really, Lilith thought, they probably wanted to find a cozy nook under a tree where they could make out in the grass under the setting sun. And that sounded fine with her.
“Hey, Lilith,” Isla said, as ten of them made their way in the grass out to the water, their bellies full of good food and their hearts full of love for their mates and their friends. “We really did it, huh?”
Isla looked exuberantly happy as she grinned at Lilith, who saw the covert little smiles on the other girls’ faces as they squeezed their mates’ hands, knowing they’d just saved the future of their world.
“Yeah,” Lilith said, just Jordan leaned down to kiss her cheek as butterflies danced in her stomach. “We definitely did.”
