“All right, wise ass, tell me what I’m going to run for?”
“Fuck-Master,” the man answered.
All of them laughed.
“Incoming bogies… Incoming bogies,” a voice over the 1MC announced. “All hands man your battle stations…”
“Come on, men,” Jacob said, “let’s get to the ready room… Let’s go.”
“Skipper, when the hell is this war goin’ to be over?” one of his men asked.
“Soon, I hope,” Jacob answered. “Soon.”
By the time Jacob and his squadron reached the ready room, the sky was filled with screaming Japanese planes flying with maniacal determination through a curtain of steel. The kamikazes were back.
The 1MC blared. “Pilots, man your planes… Pilots, man your planes… All hands battle stations… All hands battle stations.”
The war was still raging and would for a long time…
