Have a Heart 1 Page 24

by Rachel Burns

Brianna was at the local bookstore. They had some sheet music in boxes on the bottom shelf.

This was something her parents really spoiled her with. She had lots, but she wanted to write her thank you note to Cathy’s parents for her birthday gift and include what she had chosen with the gift certificate they had given her.

Brianna sat down on the carpeted floor of the store and looked through the boxes. She was looking for a particular song that was a little older, but it was one of those where you just can’t get it out of your head. She really wanted to learn it.

Scott had earned lots of money again this summer. He wanted to spend some of that money on books that he would need for law school. Having something to read while he sat around in his room waiting for some girl to act up was a good idea. That way he would be using his time wisely.

Scott had ordered some law books so he could read ahead before he started law school next year. He had a list of a couple more that he wanted to order. Scott unfolded his list and walked to the register.

He went flying. His hands came out to buffer his landing.

He turned to look to see what he had fallen over. He was so embarrassed, and when he saw Brianna, he quickly moved to her side.

She had her head down, and she was shaking.

“Did I hurt you? I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you.”

“I’m sorry don’t be mad, but I just can’t stop laughing. I really don’t mean to, but thoughts of asking the store if they maybe have it on video tape and then selling it at school are dancing through my head.” She looked at him and smiled.

He melted looking into her eyes. He laughed too. “I bet it would be a bestseller on our floor.” They chuckled together on the floor of the bookstore.

They received a couple of odd glances, but both came from good families and were respected in their own rights.

“What are you doing on the floor?” Scott asked her with a brilliant smile on his face. He was genuinely pleased to see her.

“Well, it’s your own parents’ fault. They gave me a gift certificate for here. You know for being invited to the world’s worst ever birthday party.” She gave him an apologetic smile and shrugged her shoulders. “They keep their sheet music on the bottom shelf. What brings you here today?”

“I ordered some law books, and I have a list of some more that I need.” He looked for his list and found it a bit away from him. He stood up and got it. “Let me invite you to the coffeehouse next door to make up for almost squishing you.”

“That’s all right. You don’t have to.” She turned back to her box of music.

“If you don’t say yes, then I can’t consider myself a gentleman ever again.”

That made her smile again. He could be a gentleman, but he could be a terrible spanking monster too. “Well, I guess I can’t allow that tragedy to happen. I’m almost finished. I just have to look through one more box.”

“Okay, I will go and do what I have to then we can meet next door. I’ll get us a table. What do you want to drink?”

  “Could I have a lemonade?”

Scott thought about that and then nodded before he turned to the register to get and pay for his books. He ordered the new ones. Then he chatted with the owner for a bit. He smiled at Brianna one more time before he left.

He hurried over and ordered himself a cappuccino and a large lemonade for her. He wanted to keep her busy, drinking it for a while. That meant more time spent together.

She came in, and they found a table. He set down their tray. He had gotten each of them a brownie. She looked at it and smiled.

“To make up for missing your birthday cake this year.”

She smiled again. She was full of smiles today. They sat down and talked easily with each other. He snooped through her bag. She had bought a book about eating yourself healthy. He laughed, and then he turned serious. “You aren’t planning on forgetting about your medicine or anything extreme like that?”

“No.” Again she gave her that amazing smile that he so loved. “But there might be something in there that might help me a little in my daily life. I once read that raspberries are good for cleaning out your blood. So I ate a lot of them, and I started feeling a lot better. On the days I eat raspberries, nothing bad has ever happened to me.”

“I’ll have to remember that.” He thought that she was the cutest thing in the world. They talked about him going to law school. He told her about his hopes and dreams, career wise. They were both surprised at how easy it was to talk to the other.

“Scott, I need water, please.” She dug in her purse for her medicine.

He jumped up to his feet and went to the counter and order tap water so she could take her medicine.

He brought it back to the table and set it down and continued to talk while she took her pills as if it was the most normal thing in the world that he was on a date with a girl who popped in one pill after the other.

Scott made her feel normal. He didn’t say anything or stare at the pills. They continued to talk until her cell rang.

Brianna answered. “Hello, Dad, … I’m fine, … I met Scott Greene at the bookstore, and we are now at the coffeehouse. … No, I’m not drinking coffee. I have a glass of water in my hand right now.” She brought her finger up to her mouth and made a hush motion, and then she pointed to the lemonade and half eaten brownie.

Once her father had finished the third degree, she put her phone away.

“I’m sorry, but I’d feel too guilty if I ate the rest of my brownie. Do you want it?”

He chuckled and traded their plates, giving her his empty plate and taking hers. He picked up her fork and continued eating.

The others were watching them, and as is normal in smaller towns, tongues began to wag.

He walked her home after they left the coffeehouse. He carried her bag, and they continued to talk.

Word started to spread that Brianna and Scott were smitten with one another.

By the time she had been safely brought home, most of the people in town had either seen them at the bookstore or in the coffeehouse. The rest saw them walking together, or they would hear about them walking together soon.
