  Chapter 10

The three men ran to the servant’s garage, where there was a car used to run errands.

“Are we stealing this car,” Jonas asked.

“No…you own it and everything here, remember,” Elias answered with a grin. “Besides, do you have a better way for us to get into town?”

They drove directly to the police station in town, in case Jonas’ Uncle found out they had escaped and came after them.

The police questioned them all for hours, trying to make sense of the story they were telling. “Just check the deeds!” Elias finally told them. “You’ll see that Jonas is the rightful owner of Aspen Estates and all of the money in his Uncle’s bank accounts.”

Once they verified that Jonas was indeed the rightful heir, they were more inclined to listen to his account of what happened.

After filing a report, the police accompanied the three men back to Aspen Estates where they informed Jonas’ Uncle of what he was accused of.

Of course, he denied the charges. “Jonas, my boy! I’ve been worried sick about you,” he feigned. He addressed the police and told them that he was unaware of the actions his butler had taken against Jonas and Elias. Cousin James stepped in as his counselor to remind the police that Martin could not be held responsible for his chauffer’s actions.

Charles had come over when he saw the police and heard the tail end of their conversation. “Oh, no! Your not blamin’ this on me! They did it!” he said, pointing to Jonas’ Uncle and Cousin. “They planned the whole thing too, and were even gonna kill and bury the boy!”

“Shut up, you imbecile!” Cousin James shouted as the police were placing handcuffs on all three men. Bruce was also arrested and taken away.

It didn’t take long for the other servants to come out to see what was happening. Not all of them were shocked to hear what Martin had done and planned to do.

A new chauffer was hired, and Bartzen was taken home in time to keep his promise to Ms. Pommeray. He and Jonas promised they would get together for Christmas, which wasn’t far off.

In the coming weeks, Elias petitioned to be Jonas’ guardian and trustee until the boy turned eighteen. “Are you sure you trust a servant to be in charge of all of your money?” Elias asked before things were finalized with the courts.

“You’re not a servant,” Jonas answered, “You’re family!”
