Halfway to Christmas Page 8

by Steena Marie

The crowd cheered and together, Nikki, Parker, and Ryan came to give Becky and Matt hugs and kisses as well. The fact that the five of them—soon to be seven—had managed to find their way through the hurt and heartache of their past was remarkable and gave Nyah hope that one day maybe she and Melissa might be able to see their way past their own troubled history.

Nyah wiped the tear from her eye and turned, looking straight into Melissa’s eyes.

Was she thinking the same thing?

Nyah offered a small smile and much to her surprise and joy, Melissa returned it. Her old friend’s eyes crinkled the way Nyah remembered from when they were young and her heart surged with love and hope. Maybe it was the season. Maybe it was the touching wedding. Whatever it was, it didn’t matter because in that moment, as Michael Bublé’s version of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” played and Nikki and Parker took to the floor for their first dance, Nyah’s heart was full of hope.

Hope for the future. For love. But mostly, for the friendship and family she knew she’d have in Halfway.
