“I like how good you feel against me like this,” he whispered into her ear, sending another shiver down her spine. She hadn’t even noticed her hands were grabbing his thighs, which were long and taut, spread out on both sides of her as she sat back on her knees.
So close to him. So warm and big. So erotic but in a way that didn’t even make sense to her completely.
Vex tried to think of a reply. But as she turned to look at him over her shoulder, his mouth covered hers and he kissed her deeply while one arm held her chest and the other moved between her legs.
And when his hand came beneath the waistband of her pants, irresistible anticipation built in the milliseconds before his finger found her clit.
Her entire body rocked from the deft way he spread her folds and slid over her most sensitive area. But when her body bucked, it wasn’t the bed she felt against her back but Landon, hard-but-soft pecs pressed against her shoulders, taut abs she could feel all along her back.
The thick, stiff bulge in his pants pressed against her ass.
She gulped, mouth going dry even as Landon continued to own her mouth with his tongue while he drove her body into heady madness with his fingers.
But even that wasn’t enough, apparently, as the arm that had been simply holding her tightly over her chest loosened, and she felt his other hand squeeze one breast, then the other.
It was wildly intense being kissed and stimulated and caressed in so many ways and in so many places at the same time. All she could do was just fall into the unending heat of his touch, give in to the powerful arousal that was building to a feverish pitch in no time at all.
She moaned against his mouth, and he pulled away, letting her gasp for breath as he licked the shell of her ear. In the same moment, he lightly pinched her aching nipple with his hand while the other hand he had down her pants continued to move up and down her sex with slick, perfectly timed movement.
She cursed, grateful for the sound barriers she’d put up as release claimed her. Everything went off like a rocket inside her, and her body tensed so hard she jerked forward.
But Landon moved with her, keeping himself up with one hand on the mattress while the other wrapped around her midsection. Of course, the sensation of his skin on hers—sticky from sex and exertion—only made her come a little harder, and she screamed unintelligible words as her body clenched and released with lightning hot bliss.
She was panting by the time she was done, surprised at the strength of even her own release. Landon just held her for a moment, then turned her over, letting her slump back onto the bed.
The wicked grin he gave almost made her come again right there on the spot.
He’s just good at sex. And we’re compatible in the bedroom. Nothing more or less than that, she thought to herself as she stared up at his piercing light-blue gaze.
It was like he could see right through her, though Vex knew that the idea was as absurd as the thought that there could possibly be more than just physical attraction between them.
“You better not be stopping yet,” she said, trying to find the commanding tone she usually used around people.
But with Landon, nothing was ever quite the same.
He pulled off her lounge pants and underwear, then looked down and realized he still had his jeans on and did her the favor of pulling everything off before coming back onto the bed with her.
Good thinking, dragon.
“I won’t stop, not ever, unless you tell me to.” The hunger in his gaze was bare, aching, as his gaze roved down her. Just that single look made her ache to have him inside her, filling her with that thick length.
“Good,” she replied, taking in every inch of his tall, gorgeous body.
Damn, he was hot. His pitch-black hair was tousled, giving him a rougher look than he normally had. A small dimple showed at the corner of his mouth as he smiled at her, big hands and deft fingers trailing over her naked body.
And when he slid a finger inside her, Vex’s body tightened with the need for more. More of him. More of everything.
How had he made her so insatiable?
One finger became two, then three as he tested and stretched her. Granted, she didn’t doubt she could take him inside her (in spite of his considerable size), but the anticipation of watching his expression get more heated, more insistent with each stroke, was almost painfully pleasurable.
And when he hooked his fingers, stroking up against an incredibly sensitive area she didn’t know was there, a ragged moan left her lips as she imagined him inside.
Satisfied, Landon slowly withdrew his fingers, leaving her wet and wanting. To her surprise, he took each digit in his mouth, licking it clean and making her blush from the strangely intimate act.
“Hmm, perfect,” he said, watching her the entire time until he was seemingly satisfied with the taste of her on his mouth.
She didn’t know if she should be flattered or shocked.
He reached for a foil packet she hadn’t seen him toss beside them on the bed earlier. He tore it open with his teeth, then rolled the condom over his impressive girth.
She almost wished they didn’t have to have anything between them at all.
But they’d agreed to not mate.
Either way, her fantasy was finally becoming real.
The air around them was strangely tense, more than just arousal and warmth and impending pleasure making the room crackle with something beyond simple magic. And Landon’s expression was serious, desire and focus showing plainly in his expression—along with something else—as Vex felt his cock tease her entrance.
Even the slight touch was erotic until it burst into something much stronger as he slowly pushed inside her.
Vex’s entire body felt pleasurably stretched from the inside out. Landon had felt sizable but manageable in her hands yesterday. But now it was like he was kissing her insides with every inch of the thick, tight sensation that went deeper and deeper until they were hip to hip.
Vex released the pent-up breath stuck at the back of her throat, letting her body relax for a moment while Landon just kept himself propped up above her. She could see the flexion of the muscles in his shoulders and biceps, see just how much he was holding back while still giving her everything she could possibly want and then some.
Truly a special dragon to be able to do what he did to her, if nothing else.
She closed her eyes, willing away further deliberations along that train of thought. Instead, she focused on the heady, sensual movement of his body inside hers as Landon withdrew a bit, then thrust into her again.
Just the way he was able to hit that special spot inside her just right was enough to almost make her come on the spot.
But Landon’s kisses kept her centered, kept her relaxed while he moved into a steady, rhythmic push of his hips. Each inch of him felt so wonderful, so intense she didn’t know how long she’d last.
To her own surprise, she grabbed Landon (who had been busying himself with her ear in that moment) and pulled their mouths together in a soul-searing kiss. And while his lips crashed over hers, his body thrust into her over and over, going faster as the indescribable force that bound them together seemed to wind tighter with each passing second.
She groaned against him as his tongue thrust inside her mouth to the tempo of their bodies. And while they moved, Vex’s hands gripped onto his neck and the back of his head while she could sense him getting closer to the edge as well.
The fire within was burning brighter and hotter until she could barely conceive what was the floor or the ceiling. They could be floating off the ground for all she knew with her eyes shut like this and their bodies tangled around each other so tightly she didn’t know how they could be two people.
Only the sound of slick skin sliding into her filled the space around them. His scent, like frost on a cool spring morning, filled her senses. She could feel his heartbeat echoing her own while he kept them both pushing upward. Upward until she couldn’t possibly h
old on another second.
Vex arched her neck, pulling her mouth away from his, and she felt him nip the side of her neck in the drawn-out moment held between release and buildup.
But she could barely feel it as an orgasm more powerful than any before ripped through her like a tidal wave. Vex screamed from the intensity of it, calling Landon’s name over and over, not caring if he got ideas or not because it was the only word she could possibly think of as she came.
It was only a second later that she felt Landon come with her, cock jerking inside her as he grunted. His arms tightened as if they were being shocked, body rippling with release so hard she could feel it pushing her even deeper into her own.
She could hear her name on his lips now too, sworn under his breath while they came together. Vex’s vision blurred, body holding Landon as tightly as she could everywhere.
By the time they were both finished, she was gasping for air, watching while Landon’s pecs moved up and down with great breaths.
And for the smallest sliver of time, she was content to simply look up at him. She could feel the emotions swirling between them. Feel his desire for her matching the growing desire for him too.
But before she even needed to say something about their agreement, Landon leaned down, kissed her once, then slowly withdrew and walked over to her bathroom to clean up. When he came back out, proud and naked and glowing from the exertion, he looked extremely satisfied, even though she could see a slight crease at the corner of his eyes that said there was more to this than just the sex.
He pulled her covers back and set them over her, then sat next to her on the bed, still naked as he watched her curiously.
“So where am I sleeping tonight?”
“Still insistent on going on our mission tomorrow, hm?” she asked, exhausted and strangely happy after their second encounter.
She already couldn’t wait for the next time they did that again.
“Absolutely. We negotiated, after all.” He stood and gathered his clothes, putting on his underwear while he appraised the forlorn couch in the corner.
He raised an eyebrow at her in question, but before he could even ask, she patted the spot on the bed beside her.
After all, they’d shared a bed twice already. What harm was a simple sleepover anyway?
And after all he’d just done, who could put him on the couch?
Plus—and this was even more important—she trusted him. Maybe, oddly, in a way she never had anyone before.
Landon grinned, came around the bed, and lay back on it, watching her with a smile that made her want to send him out for being so smug.
But there was something nice about his warmth even when the lights went out and the room was bathed in pure darkness.
Just one night of this couldn’t hurt, right?
But as she felt an odd tinge in her heart, looking over at him as he slept peacefully, she really wasn’t so sure.
Perhaps this goody-two-shoes dragon was pretty dangerous after all.

“Wakey wakey.”
Landon blinked and pushed himself up to a sitting position, trying to figure out where he was.
“Hurry and get dressed. We got a mission, and Tyrus won’t like it if you hold us up.”
She put her hands on her hips, looking crisp in purple-gray fae robes that matched her eyes, with a belt around her waist and soft-looking shoes.
Today, she looked like the confident, untouchable fairy he knew her to be, nothing like she’d been last night in his arms. Shy, willing, demanding, giving.
He was glad he’d never given up. That he’d come all this way to find her.
“You going to sit there mooning or come fight stuff with us?” She shook her head. “I put breakfast on the bathroom counter. Grab a shower and join us outside.”
Then she turned on her heel and left.
He guessed that today he’d be seeing the business side of his mate, the one everyone else saw.
The one everyone else feared.
Landon quickly got showered, dressed, and ate breakfast, which was some kind of shake along with toast.
Then he walked into the hallway, feeling all eyes move to him, some suspicious, some impatient, some curious.
A tall man with long dark hair caught in a ponytail over one shoulder walked over to Landon, extending a hand. “Tyrus. Vex’s second-in-command. And you are?”
Landon glanced at Vex, unsure what she wanted him to say. “Just some backup.”
Tyrus’s lips curved up in a smirk. “Right. Of course.” But Landon could tell the man didn’t in any way respect him.
As the fae continued to appraise him with narrowed eyes, Landon was pretty sure there was almost hatred in his dark gaze.
Landon would have to keep an eye on that. Tyrus had no reason to hate him, after all. For now, they were on the same side.
“Let’s head out,” Vex said. “No time for more introductions. Landon isn’t here to be anyone’s friend, but he has some powers we can use.”
Tyrus scoffed, looking over his shoulder at Landon as Vex created a portal. “I don’t see why we need him.”
Vex gave Tyrus an annoyed look. “Seriously? We aren’t going to say no to free help.”
“He stinks,” one of the bears said.
“He lowers your standing, your majesty,” Toady said.
“Shut up, all of you, or I’ll send you to the middle of the fire forest.”
Everyone went quiet at that.
“Let’s go,” Vex said, walking into the portal.
Everyone piled in behind her, trying to be first, and Landon held back imperiously, returning a glare from Tyrus, who only seemed to hate him more with every passing glance.
Was the fae perhaps… jealous? That was the only thing that made sense.
“Landon, come on,” Vex’s voice called from inside the portal. “You’re making us late.”
Landon shook his head and stepped inside, trepidation building in him at where they might go and what they might find.
But now that Vex’s cronies were antagonistic to him, he didn’t intend to show any weakness.
He fell, purple smoke swirling around him, rushing wind like time itself flying by, and felt the ground rush up to meet him quicker than he thought.
He pushed himself up and looked around him, seeing a lush forest of tall trees creating a canopy overhead with purple and black leaves.
An odd, exotic forest.
“Chaos grove,” Tyrus said reverently. “I didn’t know they could grow so tall.”
“They can when there’s something wretched around,” Vex said. “Right now, we need to find it.” She walked deeper into the forest as everything darkened around them, only shards of gray light shining through the gaps in the trees.
Landon didn’t like the feel of this place as mist crept over the ground, covering their feet. Their footsteps were muffled by the slightly damp soil beneath them, and Landon wasn’t happy about that because it meant someone could sneak up on them too.
He tried to get closer to Vex, but Tyrus put out a hand to block him.
“Not so fast, newcomer. You take up the back.”
The dragon in him wanted to lash out, to kill Tyrus for trying to keep him from protecting his mate, but Landon knew he would only undermine Vex if he pushed things, so he allowed himself to step back.
“Fine,” he said. But he glared into Tyrus’s eyes and didn’t break contact until the fae looked away, disgusted.
“Come out, come out wherever you are!” Vex called cheerily, almost skipping in front of them, though even the bears seemed to be creeped out. The tallest of them was allowing Toady to ride on his shoulders.
Altogether, they made an odd-looking group.
“We just want to meet you! See if you’re interested in a new work opportunity. You see, we’re recruiting for our operation, and my cohort here detected your chaos signal. He’s chaos fae as well.” She looked around, but the empty trees held no answers. She
turned to her posse, hands on her hips, cocking her head. “Well, that’s weird.”
Suddenly, Landon caught a flash of something just outside his vision as he felt something wrap around his waist, jerking him backward.
“Thanks for the snack,” a deep voice rumbled.
Before Landon could even twist to see what had grabbed him, a blinding purple flash lit the clearing, so bright he couldn’t see, and he felt himself released and dropped to the floor.
He shook his head as a howl of agony resounded through the forest, slowly fading into nothing.
He looked over to see a portal, already almost closed, and then saw Vex glaring at it darkly.
“That was a chaos dragon,” Tyrus said, stepping up to her furiously. “Do you know how much power you just wasted? All to protect your boy toy?”
Everyone else in the clearing was silent.
“It was a lost cause,” Vex said. “That thing was going to eat Landon and, I’m sure, the rest of us next.” She brushed herself off, then glared at Tyrus, daring him to challenge her. “I don’t want to work with someone who doesn’t have any control over themselves.”
She walked a little forward in the forest, humming and looking around. “Anyone else here?”
Tyrus was walking over to the others, standing with them and scowling at Vex as Landon went up to meet her.
“I… Thank you for that. I’m supposed to be the one protecting you on these missions.”
She laughed at that, waving a hand. “Please. You’re too valuable to be a mere shield. And it was nothing. He had bad manners, so I just sent him somewhere no one will find him.”
“Where?” Landon asked, slightly disturbed.
“Who knows?” Vex said cryptically. Then she sighed. “All right. Just a few miles from here. But I doubt he usually sees anyone, and I couldn’t let him eat you.” She grinned. “I’m not done with you yet.”
It still stung his pride a little that she’d had to save him. But overhearing her cohorts made him feel slightly better.
