Grimshaw opened the evidence bag containing the wallet and started leafing through it.
He let out a heartfelt groan. ‘You are never going to believe who it is.’

Acknowledgements
Wow, it’s hard to believe that it’s that time again – writing the acknowledgements for another DCI Warren Jones! It’s incredible to believe that ten years have passed since I first sat down at my keyboard and started writing what would eventually become The Last Straw. Eleven books on and it still seems unreal. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to read one. Sometimes publishing can be a bit of a numbers game, but when I look at how many copies have been sold or borrowed from libraries it’s humbling to realise that behind each one is a real person who has read something that I wrote.
With every book the team behind me gets bigger, and every time I worry that I will forget somebody. So, in anticipation of my inevitable goof, I apologise sincerely and hope that you know how much I appreciate your help.
First of all, a big thank you to the team at HQ Stories and HarperCollins, in particular my two editors for this book, Abi Fenton and Dushi Horti. It has been a delight working with everyone again and as always, the book is immeasurably improved every time you give feedback. Before it reaches HQ though, there are three more sets of eyes that have combed through the manuscript: Cheryl, Mum and Dad. Thank you so much for your input; Mum and Dad’s ‘editorial meetings’ via our Sunday afternoon family video-conferences were a blast!
As always, I have sought the expertise of those more learned than myself. My favourite lawyers, Caroline and Dan, have kept me on the straight and narrow for years when it comes to police procedure. Thanks guys. I would also like to thank Naomi at Slee Blackwell Solicitors for taking the time to answer a random question out of the blue, from a stranger claiming to be a writer, concerning the rules governing the drafting of wills. Bob Gitsham was an invaluable source of information concerning how a kitchen in a hotel would be organised. As is always the way, much of our conversation didn’t make it into the final book, but that which did was crucial to the plot.
Richard Latham very generously donated the use of his name for a character through the annual CLIC Sargent Good Books auction (www.clicsargent.org.uk), which supports children affected by cancer. I hope you enjoy your appearance, and thank you so much for supporting such a wonderful charity.
Most of this book was written and edited during lockdown, so I want to thank our wonderful NHS and the key workers (including the police) that have kept the country running, and the scientists that have worked tirelessly to give us hope that next year will be better.
Finally, it has been a difficult, and at times disappointing year for everyone, but I know that it would have been far harder without my beloved Cheryl. I love you, and fingers crossed it will have happened by the time I write next year’s acknowledgements!
Best wishes,
Paul Gitsham
A Letter From Paul.
Wow, time for another thank you to my readers. Whether you have been with Warren and the team since his first appearance, or this is your first experience of the series, I hope it has lived up to your expectations.
It’s been a funny old year! If you haven’t read the book yet, let me reassure you that the novels in my series are typically set three or so years before their publication date, so there will be NO MENTION of the big C!
Please, dive in and if this book helps distract you for a few hours, then I’ve done my job.
Keep safe and thank you.
Paul.
