“That reminds me,” Missy began. “I got a chance to talk to the people you spoke with during your investigation. And I have updates on all of them.”
“Oh, tell me,” Holly said eagerly.
“First was Joe Cooper. I know you were worried about him, since he was alone and having trouble getting food. I think we may still do a weekly meal or something for everyone, but I’m focused on the kids for now. Anyway, he got a promotion at work which came with a raise. He should be doing much better now,” she said happily. “Plus, he’s still helping Jordan build a fort for the kids, and Jordan’s going to pay him for his time as well.”
“Good, I was concerned about him,” Holly admitted.
“I know, you’re such a sweet girl,” Missy said fondly. “And then I spoke to Lola.”
“Her little boy is just too cute,” Holly said with a grin.
“I agree,” Missy said. “She was able to get a good paying job in a nearby town. I can’t remember which one, but thankfully, they’ll be in a much better place, financially. She’ll be able to put him in the daycare facility her work provides until he’s in school. It all worked out perfectly, even if she did have to struggle for a bit.”
“That’s great,” Holly said. “She deserves it.”
Linc and Jordan returned with the ice cream orders and handed them to Holly and Brigid, while they had a conversation about Linc’s house and what he was planning on doing with it.
“I can’t believe you were managing all of this without me knowing about it,” Brigid said as she shook her head. “I feel like I should have noticed.”
“Well, you were planning a surprise birthday party,” Holly pointed out. “You were probably a little distracted.”
“True,” she agreed. “And worrying about getting your car finished and legal before the big day. Believe me, there were times I wasn’t sure it would happen.”
“What about the other two?” Holly asked Missy. “How are they doing?”
“Well, Ava’s dad stepped up and asked for a raise at work once he realized just how much they were struggling. I’m sure he knew, but he hadn’t really thought about how much it was affecting his kids.”
She turned to Brigid and said, “His wife left the family a while back. She had an addiction problem and just couldn’t get a handle on it. The poor man has been trying to care for an eight-year-old and a five-year-old all by himself, while he was working as much as he could to make more money.” She shook her head. “He’s going to be helping us out with maintenance at the church. Jordan can do some, but he’s no handyman.”
“If he ever needs someone to watch Ava and Chris, let me know. I won’t charge him. They’re the best,” Holly offered.
“I’ll let him know,” Missy said with a smile. “That just leaves Mason and his mom. He’s started mowing yards, and she’s doing better. I can’t remember if she got a promotion or a different job or what, but it was something like that.”
“Good,” Holly said with a nod before taking a bite of her hot fudge sundae. “It’s always nice to hear things are getting better. Any progress is better than none at all.”
“Very true,” Missy said nodding.
“Hey, Brigid,” Linc said as he and Jordan wrapped up their conversation. “What do you think about opening a B & B? We can use my old house, and it will be nice and handy since it’s right next door to your house.”
