The Guy Next Door Amazon Final Page 10

“Yes, then I will be happy like you then, huh?”

He was being sarcastic, and I was going to ignore the little jab. I was happy, most of the time. I didn’t have to be in love or any of that, to be happy. Everyone equated happiness to a relationship that was going well, but I did not. I was happy with the fact that I could buy and do anything that I wanted. I wasn't held back by a woman and I could sleep every night, knowing that that same woman I supposedly loved, was not trying to hurt me or set me up for failure.

“I am happy enough Dominic. My bank account is certainly bigger, so I guess whatever I am lacking in the relationship area, I get back in that area. It isn't all about money, but it isn't all about the girl either. It’s about life and everything in between.”

Dominic most likely had some smart-ass retort to come back with, but I didn't get to hear it, because there was loud laughter coming from the main office. That was where all the assistants cubicles were located. There was also a few accountants and helpers upstairs as well. This was usually a very quiet area and that's how I liked to. Who was making all that ruckus?

When I asked my assistant about it, he of course knew the answer. Dominic seemed to know everything.

  “That's the new hire, Amelia.”

“Why did I not hear about it?”

“You don't really hear about any new hire Phillip. Why pretend that you do?”

“Okay, well Dominic, why the hell is there a woman in here? You know that I like to stay away from female secretaries. They're more of a distraction than anything else. And they’re chatty and loud.”

“Don't let HR hear you say it. You know that you can't, not hire women.”

“Well, however you want to spin it, is up to you. But you know that I don't hire them, so what is she doing here?”

“Her family is connected to your family and I was personally called by your father, to slide her through. He made sure to tell me that he wanted her on this floor, so I didn't really have a choice.”

I could hear more laughter coming from the other side of my office door and every part of me, wanted to go out there and explain to her the rules. I knew that I wouldn’t be very diplomatic about it though, so I knew that I had to have Dominic take care of it. He was better at those kinds of moments.

“How long has she been here?”

“She probably came in around nine, so about twenty minutes.”

“Twenty minutes and she's already causing chaos in our office. This is why I don't hire women.”

I stood up and walked to the door, so that I could see through the glass. I could not see the women and when I asked whose assistant she was, Dominic told me. I checked the desk that she was supposed to be in, but she wasn't there.”

“Why don't you go find our new hire and explain the rules? I really do not have the patience to deal with this right now. I need quiet so that I can think.”

Dominic most likely wanted to say something back, but I was in a sour mood because he had brought up my love life. All I could think of, was the fact that my father was pushing another problem into my hands. I wasn’t going to think about it, not when I had a speech to learn and speak in front of a hundred people.

I had better things to think about, than a loud new hire that didn’t know her place. Once again, I was frustrated to no end by a woman. I couldn’t focus and once Dominic left, I still heard laughter a few more times.
