After going through the same motions I had earlier, I opened the door, doubly shocked at who was on the other side. “Eileen.”
“Kris,” she said, tucking her hands in her pockets. “Can I come in?”
“Mama Bear is here,” I sighed, opening the door wider. “You might as well come in too. It’s a regular family reunion.”
She ducked inside and I checked outside before shutting the door once more, wondering who else was going to come out of the woodwork tonight.
Turning, I placed the gun back on the table. “You look good.”
My former road captain blushed, bringing a rosy hue to her already tanned skin. “That’s what the Mexican sun will do to you.”
“Either that or a good cock,” Mama Bear snickered. “How’s our favorite CIA spook doing?”
“He’s fine,” Eileen answered, her eyes on me. “He’s why I am here.”
Interested, I leaned against the door. “Do tell.”
“We are going public,” she said in a rush. “This attempting to fight the cartel out of its own country isn’t working and our resistance isn’t making any headwind. Daniel and I have been talking, and the best way to end this once and for all is to expose the CIA’s involvement in the cartel ring.”
I blew out a breath. “That’s a death sentence. You know that.”
She looked away; her jaw tight. “I tried to tell him that, but in the end, he’s right. We’ve been attempting to go about this the wrong way. If we pressure the government with spilling its secrets, at least it will shut off the flow of cash immediately. Then we just have to destroy the small business ventures the cartel still has going, and it will crumble.”
It did sound like they had thought this out and with Voodoo being ex-CIA, he probably had run through all the possible scenarios.
It was going to take some balls to make this happen, and there could be potential backfiring if everything wasn’t done precisely. “What do you need from me?” I asked, knowing she hadn’t come just to give away her plan.
Eileen gave me a small smile. “I need you to talk to Alisha. We can’t be the ones that go public. They will discredit us in a heartbeat. But she can. She’s well respected and if we feed her all the information, she can put whatever spin on the story she wants. What’s more, she can keep the media from poking where they’re not supposed to.”
I frowned, not liking the fact they wanted to bring the chief of police into this clusterfuck of a situation. We had asked a lot from her over the last few months, but this would be like asking for the keys to the police station. Alisha had no ties to us outside of her husband and we were already pushing our luck with her as it was. One wrong request for things she couldn’t provide and everything could go tits up in a heartbeat.
Like getting ourselves locked up. “I don’t know, Eileen. That’s a risky venture.”
She blew out a breath. “Trust me, Kris. I’ve thought about everything. I don’t like it either. It puts Daniel in far too much danger, but he’s adamant this is the only thing we have left to do.”
Eileen was like me. She loved her man and would do anything to protect him. We were quite the pair, that was for sure. “I’ll talk to her,” I finally said. “But I can’t promise anything.”
“That’s enough for now,” Eileen shrugged. “We are back in the States, but I will contact you when the time is right.”
I gave her a nod. “It’s good to see you, Siren.”
“You too, Madame President.” She added softly as she headed to the door, “Stay safe.”
Eileen gave me a faint smile and then she was gone, taking some of the warmth with her. When did all of this go so horribly wrong? I had lost two dear friends, to people I could count on for anything, because of this damn cartel. We were supposed to grow old together, lament about our men, and worry about our children.
Not be at odds like we were now. I could use a friend or two.
“Kris.”
I turned back to Mama Bear, who was eyeing me with one of her knowing looks.
“What?”
“What’s up?” she asked. “You look like you’ve aged a million years. Are you and Rex fighting?”
I sighed, raking a hand through my hair. “No more than usual. But it’s more than that. Hell, I don’t even know if we are still married some days. This club, it’s eating us up again.”
She stood, wrapping her arms around me and pulling me into a hug. “Oh, honey. I’m sorry. I thought this time would be the one.”
I allowed myself to be enveloped in her warmth, resting my head on her shoulder. “Me too. I love him so much it hurts.”
“I know,” she said, patting me on the back. “I know, and he knows too. You just gotta find that happiness again. You two are meant for each other.”
I pulled back, wiping my eyes as I did so. “Well, there’s more than just the two of us now.”
She arched a brow. “What are you saying?”
I touched my stomach, swallowing. “I’m pregnant.”
“Does he know?”
“No,” I said softly, thinking about the child that we had created out of love, the one that I wasn’t so sure my husband would want now. “I don’t know how to tell him.”
But I was going to have to, and soon.
