“Your own fault. Go.”
I take one lingering look at my beautiful, naked fiancée—real, this time—then head through the house toward the door. It’s the Crestview house, now almost completely renovated. We’re keeping it for now. Although someday I hope we’ll have one or two reasons to upsize.
I cross the living area, then pull open the new wood and glass door to let in Brody.
“I can’t believe my best friend’s marrying my sister. Now you’re probably going to go and have kids.”
“It’s a crazy ass world,” I say. “But yeah, that’s on the agenda.”
“Good. Get on that. I’ll make a stellar uncle.”
“Give us a few more years,” Sam says, crossing the room to give her brother a hug. “I want time to enjoy having wild sex in the living room without the pitter patter of little feet.”
“I cannot begin to tell you how much I did not need to hear that.”
“Don’t worry, big brother. You’ll be an uncle someday.” She takes his hand. “And at least we’re not separated by half the country anymore. Just a couple hundred miles.”
Brody is still officially on leave, but since Sam didn’t need him to help with the house, he stayed in Dallas.
“That’s not nearly close enough. How will I pop in to bother you two at the most inconvenient times? Or when you do have kids, how can I properly spoil them rotten all the way from North Texas? For that matter,” he adds, hooking his thumb toward me, “how can I keep an eye on this one to make sure he’s treating you right?”
I shake my head, amused.
“I’m sure you’ll figure out a way,” she teases. “You’re very resourceful.”
“I am,” he says, the corners of his eyes crinkling the way they always do when he’s telling a joke but hasn’t yet come to the punch line. “That’s why I put in an offer on a house four blocks over.”
“No shit?”
“That’s fabulous!” Sam squeals, then hugs him again. “When did you decide to move down here?”
“About the time I accepted a job.”
“Congratulations,” I say. “Where are you landing?”
“Your neck of the woods, actually. I just signed on at Blackwell-Lyon.”
