Last Goodbye Page 25

He smiled once more, before he turned to my father and shook his hand.

“Take good care of her, Son,” Dad said, before he turned and kissed my cheek, then he let go of my arm, and stepped back.

Finally, we were going to become husband and wife.

Evan tapped his glass, and a hush quickly fell over all our family and friends, as all eyes turned to Evan.

“My wife and I would like to thank you all for coming today!” He announced, then smiled before he continued. “I’ve been waiting to say that for so long. My wife and I. I can’t believe we finally made it here. You all know what our journey has been, so I won’t bore you with the details. But I would like to say; a day hasn’t gone by that Cass hasn’t floored me with her strength, her courage and her unyielding determination. She has been through hell, and always did it with a smile on her face. Today, I am not only proud to call her my wife, but also my best friend.”

He stopped for a moment to regain control over his emotions, before he smiled and continued.

“So, today we are all here to celebrate our special day,” he continued. “A day we are honoured to share with all of you. But…”

He paused and looked around all our family and friends.

“It’s not the only thing we are celebrating today,” he said, as once more tears danced in his eyes, as they did in mine. He slipped his hand into mine and I held my breath knowing what he was about to say next would send everyone into a spin. “As you all know, Cass had been through the battle of her life. A battle that it would appear, she has won. Yesterday, she got the news we’ve all been longing to hear. She is now officially in full remission. She is officially cancer free.

This was met with a cheer like I’d never heard before.

Before I knew it, everyone was on their feet, rushing towards us both, hugging us both as everyone cried happy tears. My dad was the first to hug me, as he cried tears of pure joy, as did my mom and Clare. Everyone was beyond happy for us. But I don’t think anyone could have been happier than I was.

Finally, it was over. I had my life back. I could look forward to the future with Evan now, knowing that I would not have to say my Last goodbye to those I loved. I was alive.

Now I just needed to learn to live.

  The End.
