Prologue
Cayane
I sat back counting to ten as I watched Juice pace back and forth on his phone. “Yo, I will be right there. Don’t let them fight man. I don’t want that for my little niggas. Just try and have them chill until I can-”
His conversation was cut short as the phone he was holding up to his ear began ringing. His face was comical, eyes wide open in shock and his mouth slightly opened in surprise. We both just looked at each other for a few minutes. Waiting, I leaned against the kitchen counter to see what he had to say for himself. Probably fucking nothing but we would see.
Instead of doing what was right, he did what he did best, lied. “Damn babe, I guess I lost them niggas. I ain’t even gonna keep talking though. Dame and Timmy are on the block about to fight, so I got to go stop these niggas.” He ran over and kissed me on my forehead before running out the door.
Laughing, I picked up my two year old son Kahlan and ran out to my little red Honda Civic. Strapping him in the fastest I ever did, I was happy to see Juice was stuck at the light. I followed behind him and I swear he was so anxious to get where he was going, he never even looked behind him. I always had a feeling he was cheating on me but today, I just knew this nigga was up to no good.
After a few blocks I realized the area looked familiar. Seeing him pull up to the green house on Wallace Street, I felt my heart jump out of my chest. No, he couldn’t be here doing this to me. I watched him walk up to the door and there she was. Her tiny shorts revealed her tattoos as she reached up and plastered herself to my man. Well I guess it was our man. Yea, I would know her ass anywhere because she was supposed to be this nigga’s cousin.
Enraged, I threw the car in park and ran up on them. First thing I did was punch him in the back of the head; I didn’t care about anything, not even the fact he could beat my little ass. She was next. I wasted no time literally knocking her fucking throat out. Her once peanut butter colored face was now purple, as she struggled to breathe. “Nisha, how could you? After all the time you spent in my face, shit, around our son!” I shouted through my tears.
“Get the fuck off of her,” Juice said, grabbing me and damn near flinging me down the steps. Did this nigga just protect his side chick? Slitting my eyes at him, I just nodded. I was done, tears dried the fuck up and all. I didn’t want a fucking apology, do over, or anything that involved giving this nigga another chance. She could have him because I would never play second.
“You know what, Juice. Fuck you and her. No worries here, I’m gone.” Hitting him with the deuce sign, I ran back to my car. I didn’t pay attention to anything as I drove. I swear, I was trying to be as safe as I could with my son in the car. But, the fresh rage was damn near blinding me. I screeched to a stop in our driveway, thankful my nosey ass neighbor wasn’t home. Kahlan clung to me as I grabbed him and ran up the stairs, fumbling with my keys. I didn’t know where I was going. My parents had kicked their less than perfect daughter to the streets the moment they found out I was pregnant. I only had one other place, my best friend Ashlee’s house.
I sat Kah in the living room in front of his toys and put on a kids video. I wondered how much of our stuff I could fit in my car. I was mentally taking inventory. I knew I should have gotten a fucking truck. Urghh. Grabbing two garbage bags, I collected my baby’s toys and sippy cups. Anything downstairs, I was taking. Stopping to smash the pictures of the three of us in the sink, I smiled a little when a piece of the glass stabbed into Juice’s image. That was the way I wanted him to suffer in real life.
Taking the stairs two at a time, I grabbed every book bag and suitcase I could find. I had all my son’s stuff packed first and decided to only take some of mine. I jumped, hearing the downstairs door being flung open. The door knob hitting the wall made a huge bang. “Oh hell naw, what the fuck you think you doing with all this shit?” Juice’s angry voice filled the house.
Ignoring him, I threw a duffel bag full of clothes down the steps, damn near hitting him in his head. “Come on, stop fucking playing Cayane. It ain’t even like that ma; you know I love yo’ ass. She just be sucking the skin off my dick. I don’t want her.”
Carrying suitcases to the car, I bumped him hard as I walked by. He was stuck on dumb, stupid, and a hoe because I wasn’t about to let this shit slide. He had the wrong girl. “Juice, get out of my way nigga. I’m good. I don’t even have the breath to waste talking to yo’ ass,” I said, walking around him. He wanted to follow me outside looking like a puppy dog.
“So, you are leaving Cay? You think you leaving a nigga like me?” His eyes were wild and he was banging on his chest. “No, you gonna stay yo’ ass in this house is what the fuck you gonna do.”
Not fazed by his threats, I grabbed the butcher knife from the kitchen and spun around to face him.
“Now, I am leaving. You and your play cousin can suck each other, fuck each other. Hell, you both can roll around in fucking playdough naked. I don’t care. Just move ya slow dick, awkward head, ADHD having ass from in front of me.” I usually didn’t diss this nigga because I was a good girlfriend, but I wasn’t about to hold back anymore. It was all about how I felt at the moment. He backed away, and I let out a sigh of relief. Looking around one final time, I felt a wave of anxiety, but I didn’t know why.
“Kah, let’s go!” I called out to my son as I made it to the front of the house. Juice stood there holding my son in his arms as he walked out to front door. “Umm, what the fuck do you think you doing?” I said, but he didn’t respond. I knew he wasn’t bringing him to the car; that would be too much to ask for. “Nigga, give me my fucking son,” I said, punching him in his back.
He kept walking like I wasn’t doing shit. As he got closer to his car, I felt my palms get sweaty and my heart race. Was he kidnapping our son? “Bitch, you think you about to leave me? You think you are about to take my son? He will never leave me.”
Rushing to try and catch him, he slammed the car door in my face as he peeled off. Instead of going straight, he turned left, straight into oncoming traffic. All I could hear was the blaring of horns
and my own screams.
“Noooo!” I cried as I ran to the mangled mess of cars in the middle of the street.
Chapter One
I’ve been broken
Cayane
“Thank you for being a dedicated customer of AT&T,” I said, ending the call and hanging up the phone. I looked up at my next customer just in time, as he threw the IPhone X across the counter so hard, it hit me in my chest.
“This shit don’t fucking work,” he said, his face bawled up. I could tell by his accent he wasn’t from around here. Not that I gave a fuck, he was damn rude. I tried my best to keep Miss Customer Service in place and Cayane tucked safely away. “Is yo’ ass slow or deaf?” he asked after I took too long to respond.
Blowing air out of my mouth, I gingerly picked the phone up and placed it closer to him. “Sir, can we please begin with your phone number?”
He glared at me through his hooded eyes. Shoving the phone at me again, his hand brushed mine, causing my skin to tingle. I could smell his intoxicating cologne and for a moment, I was lost in his aura. I wondered what the scent was. A bitch would buy it and spray my pillows, just for those lonely nights when all I had was my dildo Fred.
“Man look, I am all for allowing the special people to work and shit, but can I get a normal person? I don’t have a lot of fucking time or patience.” His lip curled up as his scowl deepened, and it revealed a platinum grill. Telling myself to snap out of it, I frowned my face and started counting again.
After completely stepping back from the counter, I pulled up my computer screen and gave him a look of death. One that said I wished his sexy ass would fucking drop dead. Hell, I didn’t even like light skin men, so no loss to me. “Listen, I am trying to help you. I need your phone number, so I can look up the account and a tech can take over. Oh and, nigga, ya mama is slow,” I said the last part through clenched teeth because I wanted to put hands on him.
“718-220-5819, and my bad ma. I just got somewhere to be,” he said as he licked his lips and smirked. I didn’t give a fuck about him trying to make nice now. I wasn’t trying to be his friend, just do my job and get him the fuck out my face.
“Ok, is Veronica Miller with you?” I asked in a rude tone. I sarcastically looked around the store like I was searching for the nonexistent female whose name this phone was registered too. I already knew the fucking deal. Dope boy can’t even get a phone in his name, so some girlfriend or pop off did it for him. The thought of him having a girlfriend got to me for some reason; I felt jealous and that shit was all the way from left field. After all I had been through, I didn’t date. Didn’t think about men the way other girls did.
“Come on ma, you know the deal. She ain’t here; hell, I’m visiting from out of town. Just fix this shit.” He was back to annoyed and not so friendly now. Shaking my head, I was about to explain why I couldn’t, but he cut me off. “A’ight, just sell me a new one. Transfer the chip or whatever the fuck ya’ll do.” He threw down a stack of money on the counter and answered a second phone. “Yo.” He never even looked back my way while he chopped it up on the other line. “Man, I’m gonna fucking be late; this bitch at the phone store holding me up,” he said, glaring at me.
“Sir, I will need your ID and for you to fill out the application for your new phone.” I smirked inside. Hell, his ghetto ass probably didn’t even have a fucking ID. I was going to show him this bitch from the phone store.
“Son, I got to go.” He hung up and looked behind me. “Yo, you the fucking manager?” he yelled out loud as hell. I could see Darcy’s ole thirsty ass damn near trip and fall, she was moving so fast to get to the front. She had a grin so big, I could see all twenty-eight of her funky fucking teeth.
“Yes, I am. What can I do for you baby?” she said, poking out her chest and slightly sticking out her tongue. Disgusted, I walked away. She could deal with this shit.
“His phone is broken, but it isn’t in his name,” I shot over my shoulder. Before I could even get anywhere, she was unboxing a new X and taking the old phone back to tech, so they could transfer all of his stuff. She was a real fucking thot. I tried to ignore him as I restocked the phone cases, but his eyes watched every move I made. Before long, he had disappeared; I guess he would be returning for his phone.
“Shit,” I cursed out loud as I cut myself with the box cutter. Seeing Julio was up front, I went to the bathroom to rinse the cut and grab a band aid. Once I got back there, the door was closed so I had to wait.
“Yea girl, take this dick. You better not fucking choke,” was all I heard from the other side of the door. I recognized Darcy’s moans in between. Wow. Mister sexy was her latest conquest. “Fuck yea,” he said before I heard water running. Before I could leave the hallway, the door opened and he came out zipping up his Robin jeans. I felt like shit for some reason, knowing he had fucked with her nasty behind. Not that he would want a girl like me or that I wanted his rude ass. But this pretty much ruined any chance we had.
His gaze caught mine as he got closer to me. I could feel his hard body next to mine as I backed up until I hit the wall. Trapped, he made sure he felt my whole body as he looked down on me. “Good looking ma,” he said to Darcy while he was still in my face and she stood there looking stupid. I could feel his breath next to my ear, he was so close. “It should have been you,” he whispered before walking away.
Chaos
Making my way outside, I jumped in my Range and headed to meet my cousin. He was blowing me up and I couldn’t say shit because I was two hours late. I guess I could have skipped getting my dick wet, but I needed something to take the edge off. The whole time I was fucking the manager’s face, I was picturing her employee instead of her. Cayane, that was what her name tag said. I could still see her coco brown eyes as she glared at me all morning. I guess I pushed shorty too far. I mean shit, I knew she wasn’t slow. But I needed her to just do what the fuck I asked her and not give me the run around.
I was shocked when she told me my momma was slow. I wanted to be mad, but it was new for someone to clap back on my ass. Even though this wasn’t my town, my pretty boy looks and crazy demeanor should have been enough for anyone to show me respect. But, lil mama went in on my ass. She didn’t even change up when I threw stacks on the counter. She was unbothered and unimpressed. I didn’t see that often. I was used to looking into girls’ eyes and seeing dollar signs and lust. I knew I was going back to see her disrespectful ass. She made a nigga wonder what was under that tough girl exterior.
Chapter Two
Dominic aka Nicco
I hit my blunt and then looked down at my watch again. I hadn’t laid eyes on my cousin since he had gotten to town. He had come from the Bronx to Chicago the day before and I was on a field trip with my Godson Kahlan and couldn’t get him from the airport. My wife Ashlee was at school, so my cousin Ca’Shon grabbed an Uber and went straight to his spot in Hyde Park. He had driven his SUV two weeks before to check out a few of the properties I owned. After he decided on the four bedroom, two and a half bathroom town house in Hyde Park, he hopped on a flight and flew back to finish up his business in New York.
Chaos and I grew up together, but my aunt and her husband moved out to New York the day after his twelfth birthday. He and I remained close and would alternate summer visits and once we became adults, we visited each other as often as time would allow. He had a strong operation going out in New York but when territorial issues started to become a problem, Chaos knew it was time to move around.
We had bounced around the idea of him coming out to the Chi for a few months, then after my partner and main man Reece was murdered, the decision was made for my cousin to come this way. Motherfuckers had questions, but I was the head nigga in charge, so I didn’t have to answer shit.
Chaos was coming in as an equal partner, replacing Reece and I knew for sure two of them niggas was going to have a problem with it, but that was a problem they’d have to figure out on their fucking own. I took another pull on my blunt a
nd then grabbed my phone. What was keeping this nigga, I wondered as I scrolled through my contacts, found his name, and placed my call.
“Yo!” he answered.
“Wad-up, yo’ ass almost two hours late; where you at?” I blasted.
“Man Im’ma fucking be late; this bitch at the phone store holding me up!” he barked. I knew my lil cuz was short-tempered and was up in the phone store giving some poor agent the fucking blues.
“How late nigga?”
“Son, I’ll hit you back,” he said and ended the call without answering my question. I looked at my screen and didn’t bother to hit him up again. It took me five or six attempts to get him to even answer that one call. “Fuck!” I mumbled.
“What’s wrong babe?” Ashlee asked.
I turned to her because I didn’t even realize she had come down the steps. I wasn’t allowed to light up on the main floor and she only came down the steps if she had to do laundry. “Nothing bae, I was just on wit’ Chaos. That nigga supposed to have been here damn two hours ago, but he at some wireless store.”
“Why, what’s wrong with his phone?”
“Man, shit, I have now fucking idea, but he needs to hurry his ass up because we got shit to do.”
She headed towards the laundry and I flopped down on the sofa. After a few moments, she came out with a basket of clothes. I figured she had gotten them out of the dryer. “Are y’all going to be out long?”
“Maybe so babe,” I said and grabbed the remote. “We have a lot to cover and Chaos has to learn everything, every location and meet a few connects. I mean, we did some ground work when he rode out here a couple of weeks ago, but now it’s time to get to work, so I may be late babe.”
“Okay,” she leaned in to kiss my lips, “I love you and I gotta head out to get lil man from school in a few. Cay has been picking up extra hours because they are short staffed, so she’ll be later getting him this evening.”
