tanks. ‘This storage facility was built to investigate new plant life,’ she said excitedly. ‘By germinating and cultivating the samples that were found on your craft, we can monitor new forms of food and perhaps introduce them into our diet. Behind each door are warehouses of space ready to be utilised. We have the capacity to harvest substantial crops!’
They walked on a little. ‘We have state of the art equipment to analyse samples brought back from alien planets.’ The Doctor pointed all around her. ‘I would particularly like to show you this.’ She looked at them both. ‘Please sit down and I will show you something intriguing on the display screen, about the samples we retrieved from your space ship.’
The Doctor started a slide show of various cells flicking one after another. ‘The interesting part of these plants cells is that they are carbon based, similar to life forms from Earth.’ She started another series of slides rolling. ‘However, plants and seeds from the ship we have been analysing do not match any form of plant structure of today's age. They relate back to an earlier date in our planet’s evolution, perhaps the Cretaceous period. Yes! Gentlemen the growing plants, seeds and eggs we have on the table in front of you closely relate to fossils which have only recently been uncovered from mines deep on Mars.’
Celestial turned to face the doctor and spoke ‘Are you saying that these plants, and this boy could be direct descendants from Mars?’ the Commander looked skeptical.
Doctor Magellan looked at the boy and spoke. ‘The boy probably doesn’t descend from Mars, but looking at the evidence there is a link to the fossils we have from planet Mars and the plants gathered on that table. Not only that the germinated seeds are growing at a rapid rate and will be monitored closely over the next few weeks.’ The doctor left the last slide on the display and walked down to the table. Celestial and the boy gathered around her looking down at the contents of the table.
The boy moved around the table and looked at the varying sizes of seeds, he picked up one of the bags and squashed it in his hand. The seeds were quite sharp and pricked his fingers. Pin drops of blood formed on his fingers before he picked up an egg from a collection in a bowl; it was hard metallic and reflected the labs surroundings. He found it fascinating and cupped it in his hand to take a closer look. The egg dulled for a split second as blood smeared over it; it then began to warm to his touch. The boy sheltered it, turned away and placed it in his warn pocket.
‘What do you think of the items from your craft? Do they remind you of anything? Do you know why you would be transporting these things?’ Dr Magellan asked.
The boy shook his head.
‘Perhaps they were for a settlement somewhere? The doctor talked to Celestial.
‘Interesting! That would mean people would know by know that the boy is missing, I wonder if we can expect other visitors?’
The boy again glanced over the samples out on display. ‘I have no idea why I would be sent anywhere with this stuff.’
‘Well obviously someone thought it was essential, maybe wherever you were going needed these food stuffs introducing into the local crops.’ Dr Magellan pointed out.
‘Good speculation, however I Can’t put that in my ongoing report without finding more proof of an inhabitable planet.’ Celestial looked down at the boy.
The boy looked at them with disappointment, he had seen enough for one day. ‘I still can’t remember anything before the crash. I’m tired now, I want to go to sleep.’
Celestial bent down to him. ‘It’s been a long day.’ He rubbed the boy’s hair ruffling it up again. ‘I think we better give you a new home, until we find out where you belong,’ he looked at the Doctor.
Dr Magellan laid a hand on the boys shoulder and said in a quite voice. ‘I have a little girl at home; she is about your age her name is Capella. I’ve agreed to the Commander’s request for you to become apart of my family, even if it may only be for a short time.’
The boy smiled, and then looked up at her and for a second had another flash back, the person in his vision was very much like the doctor, could it be his mother he thought? This made him feel so tired and light headed that he opened his arms and moved closer to the doctor, she bent over and picked him up. Moments later the boy put his arms around her neck and began to fall asleep.
Later that evening Dr Magellan brought the boy home, she carried him into their family quarters and laid the sleeping child in Capella’s bunk and tucked him into bed. The doctor sat on the bottom of the bed looking at the boy from space, she sighed before leaving him. On entering the main living area of their quarters she sat down next to Capella and Wolfe. ’We have a new addition to the family.’ She paused for a moment. ‘His name is Mars. MARS MAGELLAN.’
Over the coming months Celestial like Wolfe spent a lot of time with the boy, they tried to pry into the boys mind and even sent him to a councilor who tried hypnotherapy to find out more information about him. After exhausting the space stations limited resources, they had reached the conclusion that the boy would fight his inner demons in his own time - they could do no more but wait.
Celestial had delayed sending in his report to MSE, until he had more info about the location of the boy’s alien world. Somehow it looked like he would have to access the crafts database but from the damage sustained in the crash, he knew it would take time to do it. The report therefore would have to be fabricated to emit any evidence of the boy. Until the time was right to reveal him to the authorities they would do everything in their power to protect the child now known as Mars Magellan.
