“Everything, you’ve shown me a few things here and there, which I’m grateful for, but you’ve mostly blabbed about Derium since I’ve been here.”
“I just wish you would reconsider, it would be such an adventure for us, you don’t even have to help me put it back on Derium, just take me to the head then tell me where the body is, and I’ll leave you alone.”
He really wasn’t asking much from me, just to spend time with his brother, while looking for the head of his other brother, “Give me until tomorrow morning and not ask me again and I will give you answer,” I said.
He nodded and left me alone after that. Most of the pack did, I believe on the orders of Mylicious. As much as I liked the place and made me feel welcomed, I just wanted more color, everything was so plain there. I shook my head and sat down and done what I had done most the days and nights there, tended to the fire or fires.
I went and checked on the boat, I made the mistake of touching it, the boat was extra tacky, and my hand stuck to it. I walked back out to the main room and sat down. I remained there, left alone, watching the moonlight shine through the ceiling once more, a nice blue tint, filled the room beyond the light of the fire. I was deep in thought when a plank of wood with some meat on it, was shoved in front of my face.
“It’s Elk meat, I saved you some,” Yura said.
“Thank you, but I’m not hungry, then again, I never am,” I said.
“Please eat it, I don’t want it to go to waste,” she slightly shook the board in front of my face.
I took it and, sloppily, shoved a piece of meat in my mouth. It was a little chewy, but I ate it anyways,
“It’s odd you don’t swallow,” Yura spoke up as she sat down beside me.
“Please don’t lecture me on staying or helping Mylicious. I’m thinking about helping, but I do miss my land, I wouldn’t object if you wanted to come back with me.”
“Really? Maybe I should think about that like you have thought about helping Mylicious. I would like to see it first anyways before saying yes or no. I think you should go with Mylicious and take me along. You can take him to Derium’s head, then we can go explore,” she said and smiled out of the side of her face.
“You’ve thought about this haven’t you?” I said, I smiled, it started to feel nice to have someone care about me, but I was to dead inside before to care back, or so I thought.
“More than you know,” she said, she had the habit of leaning on me, it was a silly little thing she did that I enjoyed.
“We will see, we can talk to Mylicious in the morning.”
“Do you want to rest under the stars tonight? they’re always beautiful after a full moon.”
“Won’t you get cold?”
“I’ll be next to you and we have furs and will have a fire, I’ll be fine.”
“There’s nothing else to do?”
“I’ve made my jewelry and clothing, made some arrowheads to trade. Mylicious made some knives and hatchets to trade, there is nothing to do.”
“Well, there really is nothing to do,” I said, “So let’s go.”
We got up, she went down the center tunnel and came back with some a bunch of furs. I grabbed some dry wood and we headed up and out into the cold night. I built the fire immediately, using some oil from the torches and what dry bark I could muster up. It was cold out, I could see Yura shivering and I could feel it as well. She laid down the furs as I put more wood on the fire. When I turned around, she was undressing.
“Are you mad?”
“Trust me!” she said and got under the furs, “Now you, lose the clothing.”
I was hesitant at first, but slowly took my clothes off and got under the furs. It was like an oven in there, she was so hot and I do mean temperature wise. She put her head on my chest and her arm across me. We stared off, not saying anything to each other, watching the stars. There was something special about laying next to someone, completely naked and not having sex. It was sexual in its own way, but we never touched each other sexually.
I watched the Northern lights pop up again, and I pulled her close. I was relaxed, I was feeling again. I soon noticed her breathing changed and when I looked down at her, she was asleep. I wanted to sleep, I wanted to know why everyone enjoyed sleeping. I was content though, with her asleep on me. I started to think of how it was like with Noemi, but no, this was different, way different from Noemi. Yura liked me and could love me back unlike Noemi.
Amaruq was right as well, I was still full hate and I needed to let it go. I closed my eyes and thought of Ireland, the mountains and the ocean which I didn’t really like, but with good comes bad.. I opened my eyes shortly after and spent the rest of the night with Yura in my arms, under the stars. I got to thinking that it might be something I could get used to.
The sun came up and I heard footsteps, then a shadow blocked out the sun. I looked up and Mylicious was standing over me, with a smaller, more normal grin on his face, “You can’t just stay away from her can you brother?”
“I’m finding it more and more hard to do,” I said.
“It’s morning, you said you would have me an answer in the morning.”
“That I did, and I do, I will help you, under one condition,” I said.
“Name it,” she said.
“I want Yura to go with us, she wants to see where we came from and where I love to spend my time,” I said.
“Okay, if she wants to go.”
“I do,” she said and lightly rubbed my chest.
“You know brother, if you ran around naked, no one would be able to see you,” Mylicious chuckled, making light of my white skin.
“I wish he would,” Yura said and kissed my chest.
Mylicious left and headed back to the tunnel. Yura and I got dressed. I helped her carry the furs back down and then Mylicious had me help him move the boat out to the surface.
“It’s not going to be fun dragging this, but it’s better than carrying it, plus Yura will be helping us. I made us some more oars, made one for Yura as well,” he showed me an oar that was half the size of our oars. I found it kind of insulting to Yura, but Mylicious was happy, so I didn’t say anything.
Mila and Tapeesa gave us some food to hold us over until we reached the land in which I was from. Then, we were on our way, trekking across the ice-laden land once again.
The sun was too bright that day, it was blinding, and wind was whipping us all hard in the face. It slowed us down more than dragging the boat. It took longer to reach the ocean than it should have, it was more in the early evening than midday. We finally, pushed the boat in the water, I was in first, then Yura, then Mylicious. Even though, Yura had a shorter oar, it didn’t’ stop her from helping us.
We were speeding along, the boat making little wakes of water. I was wanting to see whales, but I didn’t that day. Soon, day turned into night and Mylicious used the stars to navigate as Yura and I continued to paddle. We were a lot further along than before because when day broke, I could see the nice green of my homeland, Ireland, but we didn’t stop there. Mylicious wanted to go to directly where I leapt from. So, I told him where I leapt from, which is now modern day Calias, and we put the boat on the shore there.
We got out of the boat and first thing that was done, was a fire was made and some meat was cooked. They ate out of necessity I ate out of boredom, “Where to from here brother?” Mylicious asked as he scarfed down the last bit of meat.
I looked at the land, I knew exactly which direction to head, “We will need horses, or we could just run there ourselves, it would be quicker,” I said.
“No, no need to exhaust ourselves, we will get some horses, we will wait until night fall though and take some,” Mylicious said and grabbed his stomach, “I’m not feeling the best, must have been the Elk.”
I heard his stomach rumble as he walked past Yura and I, in a hurry, “He’s had too much of his drink,” Yura said and smiled.
“That stuff is horrible,” I said.
&nb
sp; “I know, I don’t know how he, or anyone else drinks it,” she said and cringed up her face.
We then heard grunting, then splattering, a smell came our noses that was of the upmost horribleness, of smells. Yura gagged, I wished I could have, but I couldn’t. Mylicious reappeared with sweat on his brow.
“Should we get a move on,” he said, not acknowledging the stench he had released upon us, “I hope no one steals my boat while we are away.”
“I would be okay with it,” I said and smiled.
“It’s warmer here, I’ll have to get used to it,” Yura said.
“Well, if we take you where we are from, it gets warmer, a lot warmer,” Mylicious said.
I didn’t want to mention going to where we were from because I wasn’t for sure if I was going to head back there or not. Killing Pontius was still on my mind, I just didn’t feel like doing it yet. The look on Yura’s face though, she was excited to be out and on an adventure.
We walked but a few miles before coming to a town, that I’ve passed through before in my travels. Unlike last time, it was daylight and people could see us. I had forgotten to cover up, all except for my eye coverings. I had to have looked odd to them, a man of all white, wearing purple glasses, dressed in foreign clothes.
The people there, for the most part left us alone. Once my brain deciphered their language, I heard one person ask where we were from, I responded, “All over, we are travelers, we are just passing through.” I left it at that and was left alone.
Their huts were nicely built, stone bases, with wood and hay tops, I thought back to when huts were crude, and the slightest wind could pass through. I had watched the humans come a long way since I was on Earth.
Yura tried speaking to me and I put my hand up to let her know to stop, giving my brain a second to decipher, then nodded at her, “What did you say?”
“I was saying, it’s interesting you can learn languages so quick. The land you love so much, what language do they speak there?”
“There weren’t many people, if any. I honestly don’t recall seeing a single hut around.” I said.
“That would be fill me with happiness to be the first person to discover a land,” Yura said.
“It does fill you with happiness,” Mylicious said, “I was happy when I found the land of cold.”
“Didn’t you imprison yourself at first?” Yura asked confused.
“Yes, my happiness was short-lived,” he joked.
We walked just outside of the town, where Mylicious wanted to rest until night fall. There were plenty of woods around and shrubbery and after a few hours of sitting in tall grass, the wildlife started to appear more.
“You know, I don’t remember making a lot of wolves on this side of the ocean. Most people don’t survive the bite and the ones that did survive I believe were hunted down or didn’t want anything to do with me. I thought at first I was offering them a gift,” Mylicious said.
“It’s not a gift, if you force it on them,” I spoke up.
“I know, I learned that over time and when I met Mila and the rest of the pack, I asked them and gave them a choice,” his voice was thick with sorrow.
“What if they said no after you offered? Would you have killed them?” I was stirring up trouble because I was bored.
“What other choice would I have had?” a small growl came from him.
“Glad I didn’t say no,” Yura glared at him after his words.
“You are stirring up trouble brother, be glad you never have to make choices like this, then again, knowing you can’t bring others into your world like Derium and I, must really weigh heavy on your mind,” his word-daggers hit their intended mark, and I shut my mouth. Yura picked up on my hurt and put her hand on my leg.
“At least you don’t have to change me for anything,” she smiled at me while speaking.
“Oh Yura, you act is if he’s sticking around after this,” Mylicious’s word-daggers continued.
“Why does he have to stick around there, maybe it will be I who sticks around with him,” Yura had some word-daggers of her own that shut Mylicious up.
I smiled and looked at Yura, it was nice to have someone on my side from time to time. It didn’t seem like too much longer that the sun started to set. Mylicious moved, keeping his steps light. Yura and I followed, also keeping our steps light. They could see a lot better than I could, so I stayed in the back. It wasn’t but a few steps later that torches began to get lit up around the huts.
There were many huts, with doors that faced us, Mylicious veered away from those and scouted with his wolfen eyes for a minute. He got ahold of me in my mind, “There’s a hut, four huts over from the right, between it and the hut next to it, are four horses. Are you any good with them?” his question got me off guard.
“I’m okay with them, why?”
“They can sense the wolf in us, they get scared at first and we have to tame them down quickly. I need you to get one and bring it to us out here, I fear if I go any further, they will sense us, and then nobody gets a horse.”
I didn’t say anything, just kept myself low and crept slowly along. The closer I got, the more active the place became. I could see the horses he was talking about, all four of them were brown and looked a little under fed, which gave me an idea.
I snuck around one hut that had an opening for where a window could be the rest had shutters that were shut. I could smell food coming from this hut, so I looked through the window, and remember, there was no glass in these windows back then. I could see that diner was being prepped, the only thing that was in reach though, were four, long, purple vegetables, they almost looked like a mix between and eggplant and a carrot. I grabbed them as quickly as I could, then headed back towards the horses.
It was too easy getting the first two to come with me, once they tasted the vegetable I had, they followed me instantly and only acted up when I was near Mylicious and Yura. The third one was smarter and didn’t want to follow me at first. I slowly put my hand on its head and talked to it, “Now, we’re going to go for a little walk horse.”
I rubbed its head a little and that eased the tension between us, it slowly started to come with me. It wasn’t interested in food, it was interested in kindness. I took to the shadows with the horse, just as I had done the other two. When I got back to Mylicious and Yura, they already had their horses mounted and were waiting on me. I mounted my horse, which wasn’t easy to do bareback.
We rode off into the night, me taking the lead of course. I remembered the direction to head and used some of the navigation techniques that Mylicious taught me and used the stars to help navigate the way. When the sun came up, we were where I expected we would be.
It was like that for next two days, it was then we started to come across graves, I shook my head in disgust, “What’s going on brother?” Mylicious broke my train of thought.
“These graves have vampires in them, can you not sense them?” I asked and got off my horse.
“Not in the way you do apparently,” he said.
“What are you doing?” Yura asked.
“I’m digging them up, then letting the sun hit them,” I started digging the grave up with my hands.
“Why keep killing them?” Mylicious inquired.
“They’re a sickness, they change easier than you, all they have to do is drink the from any given vampire and they change. They need to be killed,” I let them hear my point of view.
“Is that what you want to do with your life?” Mylicious’s words stopped my viscous digging.
“Who else is going to keep these vermin under control? You have a wife and kids to worry about, do you want a future full of vampires running around, killing, raping?”
He looked at me for a second, then I started digging again. My fingers gingerly, grazed the skin of the person buried there. I shoved my hands down and grasped onto the person’s clothing. With a quick jerk, I pulled the body out of the grave and into the sunlight. The reaction was almost immed
iate, flames and screaming erupted from the body.
Yura raised her eyebrows in disbelief. Mylicious had somewhat of a frown on his face, but sure had smile on mine. There were two more graves that I dug up and two more vampire, vermin bodies that went aflame. I wiped the dirt off my hands onto my pants, which were covered in ash. I hopped back on my horse, then looked back the other two, “Shall we?” I suggested, then took off.
“Will they attack after night falls?” Yura yelled from the back.
“More than likely, I’ve never known them not to,” I responded, “Maybe I’ll get to use my bow and arrow, I haven’t in a while.”
“You seem to take pride in killing them,” I could hear the angst in Mylicious’s voice.
“There is pride in killing them,” I laughed a little, which irritated Mylicious more.
“If I had made as many wolves, would you go off and kill them?”
“I will kill anything, wolf, vampire, human, child that attacks me or I find to be a threat, have you forgotten Kallik already?”
I had pushed Mylicious’s button. He leapt from the horse, tackling me off my mine onto the ground. I flipped him off me and out of instinct, I jumped up, and spun around, I had an arrow knocked and pulled back before I could even register it.
Mylicious had a look of surprise on his face, but I kept my bow string taut and my arrow pointed right at the chest of Mylicious.
“Please don’t!” I heard Yura say behind me.
“What’s wrong Mylicious? Does it anger you I care not for Derium’s offspring? If you’re thinking I’ll get tired soon of holding this, I won’t. I once kept this position from the morning sun to almost night before taking my shot, so I can keep you here all day. Or maybe I’ll shoot you now, and you’ll never get your precious Derium’s head.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me. Please, let’s continue this journey,” he put his hands up.
I slowly lowered my arrow, then put it back in the quiver, Mylicious slowly walked past me and talked to me in my mind, “Next time you aim at that me, you better let it go.”
