Sarah didn’t say anything, but came to sit next to me, pulling me into her arms.
She stroked my hair, just letting me get it all out.
“There, there, that’s it. You’ve needed a good cry for a while now.”
“Why?” I sobbed. “Anyone I try to love leaves me. What is wrong with me that I make them all go away?”
“Aw, honey, he’s not leaving you. He’s going to find himself. He just wants to be the best for you. Now, if we’re talking about your mother, that’s an entirely different story. She should be taken out behind the woodshed and beat for her stupidity.”
“Sarah, that’s not nice,” I giggled.
“Yep, you’re right. I’m not nice to those who hurt my friends. You know what? I’m going to come home with you for the first few days. You need someone to watch over you until your subscription box sends a replacement, and I don’t have to be home anytime soon.”
“I can’t ask you to do that,” I protested. “Won’t your family miss you?”
“Nah. My older sister just had a baby, and Mom went out to help her. Dad can look out for himself, and I’d just be bored looking for new guys to bang because the old ones all know me.”
“Hey, don’t call the boys a subscription service. Besides, all of them are busy now. I’m all by myself for the summer.”
“Well, I think I can help with that.” She wiped at the tears on my face. “I don’t think I can get your puffy eyes to go back down.”
My smile wobbled, but it was there for just a second.
“That’s better. Go lay on the bed and I’ll get you home as soon as I throw my clothes into the suitcases.”
“You weren’t packed?”
“Nope. There wasn’t really a need for it.” Sarah shrugged and began to throw stuff in with no sort of organization.
I closed my eyes, but all I could see was the camo uniform that Kelly had been wearing.
“What can I do to help?” I decided that sitting still was a horrible idea.
“Strip the sheets and roll them with the pillows into the blanket.”
We got her packed and out of there in record time. Her things made the already full car stuffed to the brim.
“Will you drive?” I held out the keys to her.
“Sure, sweetie.”
“Woot! Look out summer, here we come!” Sarah yelled at the campus before peeling out of the parking lot.
Things were about to get very different.
