“I just needed to know that it was a valid possibility before I plead Demetrius’s case to the dragon kingdom.”
“You said he showed you what happened. Show us.”
“Huh?” I scratched my head, once again feeling inadequate. I felt that way a lot around all of these experienced, powerful entities. “If calms can do that, I haven’t yet learned...sorry.” Soft laughter swirled around me. They were laughing at me. Awesome.
“Silly, Fiona. You have much to learn.” The head witch held out a hand. “Just as Demetrius showed you, you can show us.
I gazed at her outstretched hand. “So I just...what? Pull the vision out of a file cabinet in my mind?” I snickered at my own lame joke.
“Precisely.”
My smile dropped. “Oh.”
The witches exchanged amused glances and I sighed. They must have thought I was such an idiot. Hesitantly, I made contact with the witch and tried my best to conjure the memory of what Demetrius showed me. Her eyes were wide and filled with dismay when we broke contact.
“Fiona, we think Demetrius may be telling the truth. Dante should be held responsible for the murder of that student.”
My heart leaped. “So, you’ll help me? Free Demetrius, I mean?” Surely they would. Demetrius was a wolf shifter but still half warlock―a part of their community.
I felt a wave of dread coming from the witches, and I swallowed my disappointment. They weren’t going to help me. I was sure that was what they were about to tell me. I certainly wasn’t expecting what the leader actually said.
“Fiona, I’m afraid we have a more pressing concern.”
“More pressing than saving an innocent man from execution?”
“Well, this is about saving more than one life so...perhaps.”
My brows shot up. “Uh...okay.”
“We’re ashamed to admit that our prisoner has escaped. If he isn’t caught soon well, you saw what happened with the slayers.”
I gawked at the witch, looking at me with a sheepish expression. As far as I knew, they only had one prisoner who was powerful enough to escape their grasp. “You let Dante get away?”
She scoffed. “We didn’t let him, Fiona. However, he is no longer in our custody and we have to remedy that as soon as possible. We’ve kept his escape under wraps to avoid panic in the shifter and witch communities. It’s only a matter of time before he starts causing trouble again.”
Not just trouble. Catastrophe. Murder. Mayhem
“That’s one of the reasons we’re happy you came here. We need the core council’s help to recapture our prisoner. It was your team who took him down after all.”
Mouth open and eyes wide, I had no words. The thought of the criminally insane Dante running the streets free was mind-numbing.
