“Are you all right?” he asked her.
“I’m not injured, if that’s what you mean.”
“You let him capture you, didn’t you?”
Zarah’s mouth slipped into a sly grin. “He wasn’t afraid of me. Not in the slightest. All I had to do was feign fragility and he took the bait. What a fucking idiot.”
“Have you ever…”
“Killed anyone?” She shook her head. “Never.”
“Me either,” he confessed. “But I’ll kill anyone who dares hurt you.”
“I’ll do the same for you.” She peered into his green eyes. She’d do anything to protect the men who had fought to protect her since she’d met them.
Eventually, her adrenaline would fade and she’d have to face what she’d done. Taking a life, even one as evil as the guard, was sure to have repercussions to her mental state, but she was positive she’d never regret it.
“You were right about their plan. Even if I had never burned Marius and fled, they’d have killed my family.” Knowing the truth eased her guilt just a little. If she’d have been up on that balcony, Aerilyn would have died, too. But it intensified her hatred for the Cardasians. The whole time they were negotiating with her father for peace, they’d been plotting to destroy them from within.
Zarah gripped the railing and peered over the edge. Despite living so close to the sea, she’d never been on the water. The cold ocean air cooled the heat still filling her from the fight.
Her gaze lifted to the kingdom growing smaller in the distance.
Part of her was sad to say goodbye to the only home she’d known. But any heartache she felt for leaving was overshadowed by her determination for revenge.
This wasn’t the last time she would see Lyria. She would find the earth mage Madame Briar predicted, then learn to master all the elements. She would stop at nothing until she became the strongest aether mage that ever existed. Then, someday, she would be back to rescue her sister and serve justice to all those who had wronged her family.
