Description
I told him my deepest, darkest secret.
And in turn, he made my wish come true.
She's the shy girl.
The one you'd never notice.
But I did.
I watched her, studied her.
While she worked in the library, meticulously rearranging books as though she'd written them herself.
I wanted her... so I made her an offer she couldn’t refuse.
Tell me your deepest, darkest wish...
And I will make it come true.
One whisper ...
One single wish ...
And I bought her soul.
Prologue
Eli
“Stop.”
A moment in time never stops, yet I still request it to.
My driver parks the car along the side of the road while I peer out the window.
As I wait, I finally see what I spotted when I told him to stop.
The girl who made me do a double take.
From her dark hair that loosely falls over her shoulders to her apple cheeks and red-painted lips that make her look like a porcelain doll, she stands out from the sea of people walking in the opposite direction.
With a simple glance, she’s taken my breath away, and I want to know her name.
It’s not often that I want to step out of my world and into hers, that I want to know what she sounds like when she’s touched, that I want to brush away those gentle locks and whisper promises in her ear that I cannot keep.
That a predator has found its prey.
My Adam’s apple bobs in my throat as though the excitement has risen to my throat. It isn’t a surprise, but I must contain myself.
Too precious … too innocent …
But not forever.
No girl is perfect, not even when they look like her.
No, I will catch her in a lie, in dishonor, in jealousy, in dirt.
I will catch her when she falls, and when she does, I will pick her up and bring her into my world.
Amelia
I never thought I’d beg a stranger to give me pain.
Give me pleasure.
Give me all and more.
Take from me what you desire.
Take from me until I am an empty, soulless vessel.
Because that is what I deserve, what I yearn for with every fiber of my being.
As I sit here on his lap with my hands tied, my body straining against his while he slides a knife across my skin, I whimper.
“Please … punish me,” I plead with this man.
This man who took me away from my home into the dark of night.
This man who treats me like a pet, like he owns me.
This man … who knows my worst secret.
A secret buried deep inside.
My deepest, darkest sin.
And the man who’s come to claim my punishment.
Chapter 1
Amelia
When you see the one you know is going to turn your world upside down, you know.
I always thought people were joking when they said that.
But I know now that I was wrong. So wrong.
Because as I place some returned books back on the shelf where they belong, I notice a guy sitting at one of the round tables in the far back, where usually no one comes. I stick my head out and peek at him while he’s reading a book, casually slanted in his chair. One firm hand clutches the book while the other touches his stubbly chin. His tongue dips out and wets his thin lips, and he rubs them together while staring at the pages. My eyes immediately home in on the title of the book. An obvious bodice ripper, it’s a book I wouldn’t expect a man like him to read.
Because what a man he is, all suited up, looking expensive as heck, with his golden watch and perfect black shoes. His slick brown hair combed back with gel makes him look almost like a rich
and powerful politician reading a very spicy romance novel. What are the odds?
Suddenly, his green eyes peer up from the pages and bore straight into mine.
My eyes widen, and panic floods my veins.
I immediately step back, hiding behind the bookcase again, and I close my eyes while my heart races in my chest.
I wasn’t watching. I swear I wasn’t looking at this gorgeous man. And he didn’t see me.
Right?
But when I open my eyes again, there he is, right in front of me.
“Can I help you?” His voice is low—like dark chocolate you want to lick off someone’s body low—and it makes me gulp.
Staring at him for a moment, I slowly part my lips, but words fail to come to my mind. The stranger is so handsome up close that he takes my breath away.
I shake my head.
He leans in, tilting his head. The intoxicating scent of expensive cologne reminiscent of luscious trees and green forests fills my nostrils, almost pulling me in closer for another whiff.
“Are you sure?”
I shudder, my body inching back from the sheer power he exudes. His mere proximity is making me sweat, and my eyes can’t stop looking at all the tiny details, like the excited glimmer in his eyes and the hint of a smirk on his lips.
I nod a few times. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to—”
“Stare?” he interjects.
I swallow hard in response.
A brief smile appears on his face. He holds out the book he was just reading. I gaze at it for a moment, wondering what he wants from me.
“You’re a librarian, aren’t you?” he says. “Would you put this back for me, please?”
My cheeks turn crimson red again. “I, uh … of course.” When I take the book from him, our fingers briefly touch, and it feels as though lightning just shot up into my veins.
“Thank you,” he says, and the smile that follows reminds me of a wolf showing its canines. “I can appreciate someone who does their job thoroughly.”
I swallow hard.
I didn’t want to, but my body responds so strongly to everything he says and does that it feels as though I’m forced. Like a magnet relentlessly pulled closer to him.
Suddenly, he leans in and whispers into my ear, “I will see you soon.”
My heart drops into my shoes as the stranger walks off and leaves me breathless.
Who was that man? And what did he mean by see you soon?
Eli
It wasn’t an accident that I was there at that exact moment in time.
She may think it was, but she concocted that lie in her head to make the idea I was there in the first place palpable.
There was only one reason for me to be present in that library, and it wasn’t to read some book. Sure, I picked a random one up just for the fun of it, but reading wasn’t my goal.
It was a means to an end.
That book allowed me to blend in and wait … until she finally laid her eyes on me.
I just wanted to see how she’d react. What kind of look she’d throw my way once she saw that I was there not just to read but also to engage with her.
I couldn’t stop myself, even if I wanted to. I was that turned on by the mere look in her eyes and the way her body yielded to mine as though it was always meant for me and me alone. As if it knew it belonged to me.
But I must wait.
Hold off.
Be patient.
It’s not my best asset, but it’s what must be done.
Because I have to know what kind of person she truly is.
The real sinner beneath that perfect angelic veneer.
Amelia
After my shift finishes at the library, I run home for a quick microwave meal before my nighttime job at Joe’s Hotties. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do to survive.
Besides, it pays the bills. And the very hefty college student loans I still have to pay off.
My grandparents didn’t leave me an inheritance. They gave all the money to a company and never told me why.
So I have no choice but to work as hard as I can and be proud of myself.
When I get there, I put on my apron and wait for the orders to come in. My phone suddenly vibrates in my pocket, and I take it out and check who it is.
Chris?
I haven’t heard from him in hours. He’s always so busy with work. In fact, I don’t think we’ve said more than a few words to each other in days. He’s always on the run and never home. Why would he suddenly call?
“Hey,” I say as I pick up.
“Hi, just wanted to tell you I won’t be home on time tonight, so go to bed without me. ’Kay?”
Nothing new there. “Okay. Anything else?”
“No, I’m in an important meeting, so don’t call me.”
He hangs up the phone before I can respond, and I don’t know why but that still surprises me.
It shouldn’t bother me. I knew I didn’t come first when I started dating him, but somehow, someway, I believed he would change over time.
Sometimes, I really wish he wouldn’t call me while I was at work. But it’s really his shtick not to care about my times. Just like he doesn’t care about virtually anything I do … or say … or want. Sometimes, I wonder why we’re together at all. Or if he even likes me beyond the sex—which isn’t even that great, if you ask me. In and out, wham bam, thank you, ma’am. That’s it.
And he always gets so angry with me for no apparent reason—mismatched socks, burned food, missing keys—all of which he takes out on me. But then he comes home with these gifts again and again and reminds me that he loves me, so I forgive him.
“Amelia,” the bartender calls, pulling me from my thoughts, “table sixteen. In the back.”
“Got it,” I reply. Picking up the glass and bowl of nuts, I move between all the customers eagerly watching the show on stage. Some of them slap my bum when I walk past, but it doesn’t even faze me anymore. When I first started out here, it took me a long time to feel comfortable in my own skin wearing these skimpy clothes and having all these men stare at my boobs and touch my ass, but I’ve grown used to it.
At least here I get touched. At home, not so much.
I walk up to my first customer of the day, smile happily, and say, “Here you go, sir.” I place the drink and bowl of nuts in front of him.
“Oh … the other girl gone or something?” he asks, grabbing a handful of nuts and shoving them in his mouth, chewing loudly.
“I’m taking over her shift,” I reply, clearing my throat. “But don’t worry, I’m more than happy to serve you.”
He looks me up and down and licks his lips, then swallows. “Yeah … you’ll do …”
Suddenly, he grabs my waist and pulls me closer, forcing me down on his lap.
“Sir, please,” I say, still trying to stay polite even though he’s manhandling me. “Don’t.”
“What’s your problem? This’s what you’re here for, right?” He fiddles with my top to try to get the buttons to pop, but I move away out of his arms. However, he forces me right back down onto his lap again, his grip too strong for me.
“C’mon, just a peek.”
“Sir, please, stop. I am just a waitress,” I say, turning around to look at him so I can reason with him. “There are plenty of girls on and off stage who—”
“Fuck those girls, I want a private dancer,” he murmurs in my ear, clearly already intoxicated. “C’mon, do a little lap dance for me, will you?”
Sometimes I give them to customers, yes, but not guys who are so drunk and rowdy they can’t keep their hands off. I don’t want to fight him, but if I have no choice … should I do it? Knowing I could lose my job?
“Let her go.”
His booming voice is the first thing I hear before I actually see him. The man who was seated in the adjacent booth is now leaning against this booth. A buff man in a suit with slick brown hair, a strong, square jaw, and smoldering green eyes. A man who instantly tak
es my breath away … because it’s him. The guy I saw at the library.
I’ve seen plenty of guys come and go in this club, but none quite as expensive-looking as him, and he seems totally out of place.
I freeze even though I’m still seated on the lap of a drunken stranger.
Something about this man feels dangerous … almost exciting.
“What the fuck do you want?” the guy holding my waist says to the man.
The man’s thin lips twitch, almost as if he intended to smirk but then stopped himself right before he did. His eyes narrow, and he reaches into his pocket. Slowly, he takes out a gun with a silencer on it and points it right at the stranger.
My eyes widen, and I gasp in shock.
He puts a finger to his lips and shushes me.
“We can do this the hard way if you want,” he says, raising his brows at the stranger.
The drunk immediately takes his hands off my body.
“I’m not looking for trouble,” he says, hands in the air.
The man in the suit beckons me to get up, so I do, and I quickly move away from the guy.
“Now. Get up and go,” the stranger tells the touchy-feely drunk.
“What? Why? What did I do?” he whines.
The stranger doesn’t reply. Instead, he takes off the safety.
Sweat drips down the drunken guy’s forehead, and my nails dig into the leather seating.
“Leave,” the guy in the suit hisses.
The drunken asshole immediately gets up and stumbles out of the seat, looking back at us a few more times before running out of the establishment.
“But he … hadn’t paid the bill …” I mutter after him even though that should be the least of my worries right now. That’s just how my brain works. Or that of anyone with a bunch of debt, for that matter.
“Sit.”
My brain suddenly remembers the stranger with the gun, and my eyes travel to his. They’re filled with rage, poisonous rage to the point that I’m left gasping for air as he speaks.
