Gargoyle Extinction:
Book One
Prologue
I looked around as I suddenly heard stone cracking and looked down to see it crumble to the ground. The creatures began to awaken from their slumber, one by one. I could feel the fear start to rise in my chest. I turned to the one person who would protect me and to my horror, he began to transform into one of those creatures. I slowly backed away from him and my back hit the cold cement wall with a hard thud. I quickly climbed onto the ledge and turned around to face him. As I stood, I lost my balance and began to fall. I saw my life flash before my eyes, and I began to scream knowing I was about to die. Was this the end of my brief existence as I knew it? I looked up to see a dark shadowy figure falling and he grabbed me by my hand. He pulled me close to him. I could hear his heart beating within his chest. When we landed, he removed his arms from around my body. I was shaking violently from the incident. I finally calmed myself down and looked up into my savior's eyes. He looked deep into mine and smiled. I realized I knew his secret, and a huge, clawed hand came towards my face. I shut my eyes and waited to die...
Chapter One
I sat up with a jolt as I realized my alarm did not go off and scrambled to the bathroom for a quick shower. I was exhausted from the move from Denver, Colorado to San Diego, California the day before. My name is Shinka Fox, but my friends call me Fox. I am 18 years old, and I am a new artist. I was signed to a one-year recording contract with Geffen Records last Monday.
I moved into a tiny one-bedroom apartment in a complex called The Mariners Cove Apartments so I could start my music career off right. My mother, Bru Fox, is a famous artist who is presently in Paris, France showcasing her exhibits to the rich and famous.
My mother also enrolled me in this private school called Fusion Academy. Personally, I have never heard of it until I moved out here. I have just been humoring her so I can really focus on my music career instead of some new academy.
I quickly combed through my thick tangled hair with my royal purple brush, gazed at my reflection in the mirror, and smiled. I have long black hair with hot pink highlights. That is right, I said hot pink highlights. After all, it was a prep school, and they were going to kick me out anyway. So, I figured I would help them out a bit. I quickly got dressed, putting on a pair of black pants that were slightly baggy, a tight black sleeveless shirt, my black Converse boots, and I was good to go.
Because, if you know me, I mean really know me, I do not do skirts or dresses... EVER! Why? Simple. Because they are so not cool.
I practically scarfed down a Twix candy bar I had gotten for breakfast. I know, I know. A candy bar does not really qualify as breakfast but what choice did, I have?
I grabbed the stack of books off one of the tall white chairs I had purposely placed near the front door to put my books on so I would not forget them. I snatched my keys off the white kitchen counter and locked the door behind me. I ran down the flight of stairs and hustled to the white 2021 Volkswagen Beetle I had parked out in front the night before. An early birthday present to myself, why the hell not right?
I unlocked the driver side door and dumped the stack of meaningless books onto the passenger’s seat. I slammed the door behind me and turned the key; the engine roared to life, and I was off. I drove down the highway and soon pulled into the school parking lot and prayed I would not lose my car because of how big the lot was.
I pulled out my class schedule that had been mailed to me, and I walked up the path that led to the main entrance. I took a deep breath, pulled open the heavy metal door, and stepped into the brightly lit building. Students littered the hallways having their last-minute conversations before first period started. I felt their eyes on me as I passed them, as if they knew I was the new kid.
I ignored them, pretending to be lost, but I had already memorized my classes a few days earlier because a map had been stapled to my schedule. As I neared my first-period clas
s, a boy leaning against a wall outside my classroom caught my attention. I stopped and stared at him. Why do you ask? Because he was hot! He had short black hair and bluish green eyes that had to be contact lenses because no one has eyes of that color... do they?
As if sensing my gaze, the young man turned his head and looked directly at me. His eyes quickly took in my face and my hair. His stare was so intense I instantly looked away and gave him a small smile as I entered the classroom. I stood behind the door next to the instructor’s desk to avoid his stare. A group of six beautiful girls walked in, and one of them purposely bumped into me knocking me to the ground sending my books everywhere.
“Oops. My bad!” she said as the other five girls started giggling like a bunch of idiots. I could feel the anger rising in me. A tall skinny blond girl walked into the room and helped me gather my books.
“Thanks,” I said to her as we stood up. She smiled at me, making me feel a little bit better about what had just happened.
“No problem,” she said. “My name’s Kaitlin Franchot.” Kaitlin was beautiful enough to be a super-model. She had long blond hair that was up in a tight ponytail, light baby blue eyes, and a smile that lit up the room.
“I’m...”
“Shinka Fox,” Kaitlin said loud enough so the six girls could hear her. “You’re Bru Fox’s daughter... the famous artist, right?”
“Yeah,” I said feeling my face flush from embarrassment, and I quickly put my head down. The girl who purposely hit me gasped, turned on her heels, and rushed to her seat; her friends followed suit to their own. Before I could ask Kaitlin how she knew who I was, the bell rang, and everyone rushed to their seats as the instructor entered the room. I handed him my schedule, and he glanced at it then back to me with a surprised look on his face. “Everyone, we have a new student, Shinka Fox.”
“We’ve already met,” the girl I already did not like replied admiring her red fingernails from afar.
“Enough Natalie,” the instructor replied sternly to her. He turned back towards me. “I’m Mr. Golden. You can have a seat right next to Mr. Lapis over there,” he said, handing me my schedule back.
I nodded my head and walked slowly to the back of the room where the only empty seat remained. I could feel everyone’s eyes on me as I sat down. I opened my math book and pretended to listen. From the corner of my eye, I could see Mr. Lapis staring at me making me fidget uncomfortably in my seat.
Maybe Mr. Lapis is mad at me for gawking at him earlier?
When the bell finally rang, I started gathering my things and was relieved to see he had already left the room when I looked over at his seat. I exhaled in relief as I walked to the door. Kaitlin was waiting for me with the biggest smile on her face.
“Abel was totally checking you out!” She said excitedly as we walked to our next class, which happened to be choir.
“Err... who?” I asked, confused by Kaitlin’s sudden interest in my personal life.
“Ugh!” Kaitlin sighed and rolled her pale blue eyes at me. “Mr. Lapis... Abel.” Kaitlin said. “Abel practically gawked at you all period!”
“Oh...” I said, not knowing what else to say as we entered the room. We sat closest to the door which made for a hasty exit if I needed to run from any more uncomfortable situations that could arise.
“I think Abel has a thing for you!” Kaitlin started babbling on, not noticing that I really wanted her to drop the subject. Which she totally did not want to drop. Just then, Natalie and her five friends walked into the room. She rolled her eyes as she passed me, and they headed to the opposite side of us. I felt the sudden urge to punch her lights out all over again.
“They’re known as the Seven Beauties... of course, you know Natalie Bascom, the slim brunette with a big nose. The two blonds are Quinn Emerson and Monet Depsey. The other two with brunette hair are Jazlyn Crawford and Serenity Finley,” Kaitlin finished.
“Seven?” I asked Kaitlin giving her a puzzled look. “I only see five?” “Well, I make six and you, dear Shinka, make seven.”
“Whoa!” I said waving my hands in front of me. “I don’t want to be associated with them!” I glanced in their direction and they were all mad dogging me big time. “Sorry, Kaitlin... I just can’t...” I said, lowering my head. Just then Mrs. Lodell, the choir instructor, walked into the room and smiled when she saw me.
“Nice to meet you dear!” Mrs. Lodell said to me, and I gave her a small smile because I did not want to be rude. She was a short husky woman, but she was also one of the happy people. You know, those people who could be getting robbed and still be smiling about it? Yeah, one of those. By lunchtime, word was spreading like wildfire about a celebrity’s daughter being in their midst, so I decided to skip lunch altogether and hide out somewhere outside, away from all the attention. There was a huge wall behind the cafeteria, and so I walked towards it, not paying attention to where I was going and ran right into someone.
“Oaf!”
“Watch where you’re going will you!?” An angry male voice growled.
“I-I’m sorry!” I said backing away from him. But before I could turn, he roughly grabbed my arm and made me face him again.
“Look! I said I was sorry, okay?” I said, as I tried to wiggle my arm free from his Superman grip, but it was no use; he just would not let go. “Let me go!” I screamed at him. By this time a nearby group of students had stopped mid-conversation to see what was going on.
“Alright, just calm down, will you? No need in causing a scene,” he said dropping my arm. “That hurt you know?” I said rubbing my arm where he had gripped me a few minutes ago.
“Ha!” He scoffed.
Finally, I snapped. “Look. I’m sick of everyone hounding me, ‘twas rude, you know? Today just because I’m the new kid.” I spoke. “I was raised with manners, so don’t treat me like I’m some stuck-up chick, because I’m not, okay!” I could feel the stinging behind my eyes, and I turned away from him. No way did I want him to see me cry.
“Whoa!” He said taking a step backward. “I’m sorry you’re having a rough day. I shouldn’t have snapped at you...” He gently turned me back to face him, lifted my chin with his forefinger and thumb, and looked into my eyes. I gasped when I realized who I had been talking to, and my face immediately flushed from embarrassment.
OMG!... It is Abel!... He must think I am such an idiot!...
“I-I’m fine...” I lied, trying to play it off. Abel’s eyes were so mesmerizing I forced myself to look away.
“Where did you get your necklace?” Abel asked, pointing to the blue jewel that hung from around my neck.
“Oh, this?” I asked looking down at it. “Some guy gave it to my mother at one of her art exhibitions, and she gave it to me,” I said with a small shrug.
“It’s beautiful...” Abel said smiling down at me. I fidgeted under his gaze as my heart began to race standing in his immense presence.
Why is Abel making me feel this way?
“Do you believe in gargoyles?” Abel asked.
Gargoyles? Why would Abel ask such a strange question like that for? “Gargoyles?” I bit my lower lip for a moment. “Um, I guess so?” I answered looking at him strangely. “Why do you ask?”
“Oh. No reason,” Abel replied. “I just wanted to know if you believed in them or not.”
“Oh, okay,” I said still looking at him like he was weird or something. Before I could ask him what he was doing over here, Abel pulled me close to him and whispered into my ear.
“I’ll see you later, Shinka...” and with that, he left. I stood there still trying to comprehend what had just happened between us when Kaitlin suddenly popped around the corner shaking me back to reality.
“Shinka, where have you been?” Kaitlin asked nearly out of breath. “I’ve been looking all over for you.”
“I was talking to...” I turned around to where Abel had walked to, but he was gone.
“Come on,” Kaitlin said pushing me back towards the school. “The
bell is about to ring, so we have to head back to class.”
Abel could not have gone that fast, there is no way.
Abel ended up being in my last period, which happened to be English with Miss Posies. She was a nice woman, fresh out of college and eager as all hell to have me in her class. Strangely enough, Abel was sitting in the back of the class and, once again, I was seated right next to him. This time though, Abel completely ignored me when I said hi to him, and I just shrugged it off.
When school was finally over, I walked with Kaitlin to my car and was shocked by what was in front of me. Someone had shattered all my windows, slashed my tires, and left nasty messages on my car drawn in red lipstick. The driver side door had also been keyed by someone. My guess was probably Natalie and her friends.
“I can’t believe that Natalie would stoop so low,” Kaitlin said, investigating the damage done to my car. “I can give you a lift if you want.”
“Thanks,” I said shaking my head in disbelief. We walked over to Kaitlin’s black Escalade. “My father knows a really good...”
“It’s okay,” I said quietly, climbing into the passenger seat. “I’ll have my mother’s mechanic look at it in the morning.”
“Do you mind if we stop at my place really fast?” Kaitlin asked me, and I nodded in agreement. She pulled into a huge driveway that circled around an old Victorian, and Kaitlin waited for me as I got out.
“So, what made you move out here?” Kaitlin asked as we walked to the front door. “Well,” I said feeling shy suddenly. “I’m a new artist,” I said exhaling in fear.
“Oh,” Kaitlin replied still staring straight ahead. “You must be taking after your mother.” “Err. Not exactly,” I said biting my lower lip. “I’m a singer. I just signed with Geffen Records and...”
