“I love you, Ashmiza, my curvy beautiful witch.” Ace said.
“Forever, my love.” She replied. “I love you more than I ever thought possible.”
Ash closed her eyes, just for a moment and concentrated on the magic, pulling it back into her body. The necklace their souls made for her settled around her neck, with a new light inside. A small ember burning bright, tangled together in her heart. Forever.
Epilogue
Ninsy sat in the garden of her mistress's creation and did something she hadn't in a very long time. Not since she was the head priestess at the Temple of Inanna in what was now ancient Sumeria.
She prayed. “Oh, Goddess of Love, Goddess of War, my mistress and keeper, my heart is pained tonight. Come to me and soothe my soul.”
A shimmer of white light surrounded her and Inanna, the White Witch appeared before her in her robes of flowing magic, and her calming presence. “My faithful one, you didn't have to summon me this way. You could have just knocked on the door.”
The image of the beautiful goddess melted away and the form of the garden gnome she'd chosen appeared, with a tea tray no less. With a flick of her wrist, she poured them each a steaming cup and sent Ninsy’s into her hand.
The heat poured into her through her hands and warmed the parts of her that had grown cold. “Are you sure this is the right path for his sons. It's so very hard on them all.”
Inanna sipped her mug and stared out into the night. “Kur doesn't like it any more than you and I do. They may not be of my spirit, but I feel their pain just as he does. We knew the battle for their souls would be tough, they are born of demons after all.”
“But must my sister's daughters be so tortured as well?” Ninsy fought to hold back the tears threatening to spill out. She'd never refused any duty Inanna had given her. She should have. Maybe fate the daughters of the red dragon and her sister wouldn't be so horrible if she hadn't failed to keep them safe.
“You must stop punishing yourself, Ninshubar. I would have released you from service long ago if I thought your heart would be healed. Why do you continue to choose to--”
“I must.” It was awfully rude of her to cut her mistress of mid-sentence. If any goddess would understand wanting to redeem mistakes of the past, Inanna would. “If I can help one dragon's daughter find her mate, heal the wounds of her past, then maybe I can help my nieces too.”
The goddess patted her hand. “They come from a line of very powerful women. Look how Fallyn turned out. Kaden and Ashmiza have found their way home too. Tiaret and Scarlet will as well.”
But would they be able to recover from the trials and tribulations Ninsy hadn't protected them from as was her responsibility? “And what of Elinor?”
Inanna sighed. “Someday the wolves will understand exactly how tightly our destinies are interwoven with theirs. Galyna hasn't even yet learned of her own heritage. Maybe Elinor will be the one to show them all where their gifts come from.”
“If she doesn't die in the process. Azynsa and Cage already hate her for what she's done to Apollo.”
“Apollo can't become the King he is meant to be without her. Heavy and uneasy is the head who wears the crown. Or so some young Dragon son wrote back in the day. He wasn't wrong.”
“And your son?” Such a huge responsibility lay on Ninsy’s shoulders.
“Lulal's path has always been fraught with hardship. I wait not so patiently for the day he truly accepts love back into his life. But I put my full faith in you to help guide his mate to him. Maybe we should get him a cat. He seemed to like Flamina, uh, what is she called now, oh, right, Flerken.”
Ninsy worried about those two broken and dark souls ever finding each other and not utter destruction. Not even the familiars she'd given each of the girls would help there. Not that Scarlet had ever called on hers.
Inanna patted her legs and stood. “Now enough moping. Tiaret could definitely use some advice from her long-lost auntie, don't you think.”
Somewhere out there in the shadows of the night before the dawn, the son of Kur known as Trip thrashed with the pain to his heart and soul. The Black Dragon formally known as Lulal and Kur-Jara didn't fare much better. And the gentle soul of the first son of the Gold Wyvern was only just beginning his suffering.
Why must love be so hard? Ninsy didn't pretend to understand it herself. She was here only to help the sons and daughters of the Goddess and her consort find it.
She could never give up on that duty, not since she'd failed to keep all their mates safe in the first place. She cursed Nergal, the God of Death and Chaos for escaping from hell now and all those years ago. Someday she would get her revenge on him for destroying her sisters and their daughters.
Someday soon, when the Black Dragon Brotherhood redeemed their souls and found their fated mates though time and Chaos tried to keep them apart.
