Groomer Has It Page 18

by Katie Hagen

  “So, it’s like that then?”

I chocked back some more of my wine and felt it dry my throat all the way down. “I’m not sure it’s like anything, Peter.”

I walked away as the band began to play and Carlie took the stage. I stood in the middle of the dance floor, holding my poodle, and listened as You Can Close Your Eyes by James Taylor came alive around me. Jordan pulled Ashley to the floor and held her close as they swayed. I caught her eye as they turned and she mouthed, thank you.

Slowly it felt like the entire town joined in with the song. For a second I closed my eyes and just listened to the music and the voices that surrounded me.

When I opened my eyes, Carlie winked at me from the stage. Suddenly there was a hand on my shoulder and Beverly took Picklepuss from my arms as I was pulled into a slow spin.

“Tom?” I laughed as he began to sway me from side to side in his very best suit. He’d even combed his moustache. I saw my mother in her finest robes dancing with Tom’s twin brother, Turn, who looked incredibly uncomfortable and severely left-footed. “Where have you been?”

I hadn’t fully realized how much I’d been missing him until then. Sometimes a girl just needs her daddy.

Tom gave me a spin. “I’ve just been working on some things. Nothing you need to worry about.”

Somehow that only made me worry about it more. I decided to let it go. At least for the moment.

“I’m so glad you’re home, Kitty Cat.”

I smiled and laid my head on his shoulder. “This town’s never going to forget what you did here, you know.”

I wanted to tell him that I wasn’t home. But for once I kept my mouth shut and allowed myself to be spun around the floor. I’d deal with that problem another day.
