The Z Strain Page 30

by Matthew Isaiah Crawford

“Do you think we’re going to be able to live just like before?” Asked Caleb.

“Maybe someday. But we got a lot of work to do first.” She said trailing off at the end. They all thought about what that meant. “Oh, dear Jesus no.” Abeline said leaning forward in her seat. All the boys joined her, leaning forward in their seats.

Below the streets were jammed with the undead, they were ebbing and flowing through the streets. Every visible street was brimming with undead, they were flowing through the buildings, over cars, even up walls.

“Why?” Came the squeaky question from the back seat. Alex was crying.

“They must be attracted to the lights.” Abeline said discouraged.

“There, I see the airport, look.” Runway lights can be seen to the left of the approaching city. “Now let’s see if I can land this thing. Abeline turned the plane to face the runway and began descending.

  “No. Pull up!” Yelled John.

Abeline saw what he was yelling about, she pulled bac the runway was also littered with undead. She pulled back on the stick and out of the landing seconds before diving into a sea of undead.

“Oh shit, oh Jesus, oh shit.” Abeline was chanting. With a full view of black sky, Abeline began pondering their landing options.

“Where are we going to land?” Asked John.

“I don’t know.” Abeline said. “Somewhere away from the lights.”

“How will we know where will be safe?” Alex asked.

“I don’t know, I’ll think of something.” Abeline said shortly. The boys engaged in their own discussions. Abeline did her best to ignore the chatter that was going on behind her between the boys. She did hear them ask one another if they thought we had enough fuel to fly until the sun comes up so we could see the ground. Abeline figured it that was at least four or five hours away and no, they did not have enough fuel. Then she was given the answer. A black area away from lights, and she could see the moon reflecting off the water.

“Get your packs ready.” There was a stunned silence in the back. “Get your packs on and buckle up. I’m going to put us down in the water.”

“What?” Alex and John asked simultaneously.

“Can you think of anywhere else we can land blind and survive?” Abeline quickly retorted. She only received silence as a response. John had a hard time bucking his seat belt. He looked down and saw that his hands were shaking. Abeline was praying to herself in the front seat. The boys could hear what she was saying.

“Are we going to die?” Alex asked.

“I pray the lord will protect us. Just put your pack on and buckle up. After the impact you’re going to be disoriented. Stay focused on getting out of your seat, out of the plane, and to the surface.”

  “Yes ma’am.”

“For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore, for thy name’s sake lead me, and guide me. Here it comes. Brace yourselves!” The boys but their head between their knees. “Five, four, three, two, one.”

  Impact.
