Whoever comes out of this battle will dictate the fate of the galaxy. But Biggs knew even that wasn’t enough. The Empire is too vast; the war will still go on even either of them wins here.
This is just the beginning.
Biggs Field
The New Republic Chief of State Mon Mothma sat at the stage with Princess Leia Organa-Solo, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, Generals Han Solo and Lando Calrissian and several other Senators.
General Wedge Antilles stood on the podium and regarded the sea of faces of multitude of sentient species and humans standing on the vast runway of the newly constructed New Republic Starfighter Base, the megalopolis of Coruscant surrounding them like the sea of Dac around Crystal Reef.
“Almost ten years ago, we were just a ragtag of rebels fighting the Empire. With all those seemingly futile dream of bringing down a powerful tyrant, in all looks and appearances, we do not stand a chance.” Wedge began his speech.
“But we made it. Not because of one or two or three persons but with a myriad of people uniting under one banner and sacrificing their lives so that the future generations would live in freedom and peace.” Wedge continued.
“One of those many faces that gave their lives so we could all be here right now was an ace pilot and a friend, Biggs Darklighter.” Wedge automatically bowed in respect to his Rogue Squadron pilot Gavin Darklighter, Biggs’ cousin, on the front seat.
“His tenacity and wild but highly efficient techniques and contributions to the war effort had made our battles far easier than it should have been. His feats are as legendary as any of our more prominent heroes. His heroism and loyalty to the principles of the Old Republic was unparalleled. He was a much underrated hero and he deserves more than that.” Wedge felt his throat getting dry.
“If not for Biggs Darklighter, I wouldn’t even be here right now. If he was still alive we would all have been saluting to him today. Ladies and gentlebeings, in honor of a great pilot, a son, a friend and a hero the New Republic name this starfighter base as Biggs Field.” Wedge announced.
The crowd roared in cheers and applause. The pilots of Rogue Squadron patted each other in the back and saluted at Wedge.
Luke nodded in contentment and Leia squeezed his hand, smiling at him. Luke closed his eyes and stretched out through the Force.
There he was, his bestfriend, out in the cosmos smiling down at them.
