When Max started school in the fall, it wasn’t just as a journalism major, but as a journalism major with a paid position at the Verde View and a growing stream of freelance income from other assignments.

But that wasn’t the best part.

The best part was the new apartment he and Claire moved into, just off campus.

They were both away a lot, Claire working long hours out in the city, Max working long hours to make sure his seventh year as a student at ASU Rio Verde was his last.

But at the end of the day—or else early the next morning—they always came back to the same shared bed and the same shared home, where they listened to each other as they talked about their days, and rubbed the soreness from each other’s shoulders, and tangled the sheets up often enough that sometimes Max wondered why they even bothered making the bed.

Life, as the saying went, was good.

Now and then Max wondered about those eleven others at The Coffee Cave, especially the ones he hadn’t interviewed. He wondered if they’d found their own happy endings, one way or another. He hoped so, but there was no way to know.

The Cave itself passed to a new owner, who turned it into an upscale hangout that charged five dollars for a simple cup of coffee. The place was always full, even at those prices, but the music sucked. Still, Max was guessing with all that business the new owner didn’t need a second career as a drug dealer to make a living.

Max swung by a few times, but he never saw any of the others there. It wasn’t their sort of place anymore, he thought. It wasn’t his, either, and after a while, he decided it was time to let it go and stopped riding by. He and Claire had enough other things to do with their time, after all. Life was good.

And as the fall semester gave way to spring and graduation drew near, Max realized he’d been wrong.

Neither death nor sex was the greatest story after all.

  It was love. Fucking love.

It was all as simple and as complicated as that.
