Beautiful Hell: The Mafia and His Maiden: Book One Page 12

  “Do you want me? Do you want this?” he asked, patiently waiting for my response. Inside my head I was already saying, I don’t want you right now. I don’t want this right now.

  But when it came time to express those words, I said something else entirely. “I want you. I want this.”

  He smiled, a devilish grin that bared his white teeth. He was proud that I had submitted to him.

  Gripping his hand behind my head, his fingers found traction and he pulled me forward until we were nose to nose. “You will always be mine, Amelia. You can’t escape from me.”

  And he swooped in for the kill, capturing my lips under the spray of water, leaving me completely paralyzed with his promise of forever.

  Epilogue

  Baby Rose

  20 Years Ago

  * * *

  Tyler was hot and sweaty, and the kids sharing his room were as loud as ever. He needed escape to somewhere much cooler and quieter. With a book in hand, he headed to his secret hideout, deep in the forest at the back of the orphanage, a place surrounded by shrubs, tall trees, glistering streams, and wild roses.

  The crickets were loudly chirping at each other and the birds tweeted in reply. He settled his book atop the root of a tree and dipped his toe in the cool stream to check the temperature. The water was warm, not as cool as he would have liked it, but still better than bathing in his own sweat. He threw off his clothes and dived in.

  He loved this place. He loved the solitude here. So peaceful, and no one to bother him. He didn’t mind the kids so much, but since he’d gotten older, he just needed more space, compared to the four- and five-year-old kids sharing his room.

  He was just swimming leisurely, enjoying himself when he heard the sound of a soft cry coming from the bank.

  Tyler was at full alert. He knew he was alone in the woods, but that tiny cry didn’t sound like an animal or a bird. Something was wrong. His gut told him so.

  He quickly shoved his clothes back on and went in search of that tiny cry. He wound his way into the shrubs and there he found it, the source of the cry, a tiny baby wrapped in a red blanket, nestled among the rose bushes.

  Instinct took over. His hands reached out for the baby, but the thorns quickly got to him first, scratching his arms. That didn’t deter him. He tried again and now the baby was safely in his embrace.

  The baby was such a wee thing. So small, and warm and—

  Shit! Too warm. Tyler got worried.

  Who would be so cruel to abandon this little human in the forest? This baby was on the verge of dying and had cried out, pleading for a chance at life. If he weren’t there at the right time and place…

  Tyler didn’t want to think of the possible outcome. He sprang into action, pushing to his feet and running back to the orphanage to get help. But he was too slow, his legs too short. He wished he was an adult already, so he’d have longer legs and be able to run faster.

  “It’s okay, little baby,” he consoled. “You’re going to be alright. I’ll save you. No one is going to hurt you now.”

  The baby didn’t respond or make any movements. And this scared him even more. As soon as he saw the gray building in the compound, he headed straight into one of the matron’s room.

  “Georgina. Help,” he shouted, charging into her room and showing the baby in his arms. And help arrived in the form of nurses, doctors, and more matrons. They took the baby from him and one by one started questioning him about where he found the baby. He told them the truth. That he found the baby in the forest, at the back of the orphanage. And then they dismissed him from the room.

  Except he didn’t leave. He hid behind the door and eavesdropped on their conversation.

  “It’s a baby girl,” he heard one of the matrons say.

  “That’s cruel what her parents did,” another one said.

  “Why do they always do this? That’s what we are here for. They could have left the child at our institution, instead of letting her suffer in this heat outside.” That sounded like Georgina, his favorite matron. She liked to complain a lot, but Tyler knew she loved the kids here.

  “She’s so weak. Could she even survive the night?”

  Tyler walked away from the conversation, his blood boiling.

  His assumption was correct. The baby was abandoned by her parents. He wanted to cry. He knew all too well what that feeling was. He was one of those babies too, who’d been abandoned by his own parents.

  He entered the infirmary, walking over to the only crib that contained a baby inside. He peeked over and saw her, already fast asleep. He breathed a sigh of relief. She looked much better already, less pale than when he first found her.

  “Hey, baby girl,” he cooed softly, his voice low so as not to wake her up.

  She stirred a little and he reached out to ease her back to sleep when he accidently touched her small hand. So soft and warm. He felt happy at that moment. Because he knew it meant she was alive and well.

  “So you are a girl,” he muttered to himself, a stupid smile appearing on his face as he watched her sleep.

  It was so peaceful here. She would be safe here. And soon she’d get adopted, to people who would love her.

  Suddenly, she started crying and he went into panic mode.

  Shit! Was she hungry? Did her diaper need changed? There were a million reasons why a baby would cry, and Tyler had seen them all. He had looked after the younger kids in the past when they had first arrived here as babies, before they all got adopted.

  “Hey, hey, don’t cry, baby girl,” he called out softly and when she didn’t stop, he picked her up and cradled her in his arms, cooing her back to sleep. “It’s alright, baby Rose. Go back to sleep. Not one is going to hurt you now. I’ll protect you.”

  Miraculously she stopped crying. Tyler was a little surprised that worked.

  “You like me calling you baby Rose, huh?” he asked her, softly gazing into her amber eyes. She responded by wrapping her tiny fingers around his thumb. He smiled broadly. “I’ll take that as a yes. From now on, I’ll call you Rose, since you don’t have a name.”

  Rose smiled, and he felt awkward and happy and all of those weird feelings combined, because it was the first time in his life where he felt a connection to someone. She had reached out and plucked at his heartstrings with her small touch and it somehow had resonated throughout his entire body, and now they were both connected by an invisible force.

  In a way, they both shared the same fate. Both were abandoned by their parents. Both unwanted by the people who should love them. But at that moment, he knew he’d be alright. Even if no one adopted him, he’d survive. Because he had her. They both had each other. They’d protect each other. And right there and then, he made a vow to himself. He’d protect her, through life and death. He’d love her with all the love he could give. Because to him, she was now his family.

  Delivery Service

  Present Day

  My Sweet Jenny,

  * * *

  Be a dear and deliver this letter for Pa. It’s very important that you should deliver this by hand to Mr. Dente. I promise I’ll give you more of your favorite licorice when you return. And I won’t tell your sister.

  * * *

  Pa will see you soon.

  * * *

  I stared at the white envelope on the table, my heart about to drum out of my chest.

  Pa! I wanted to yell at him. I missed my important accounting lecture because of this?

  Pa had left a message for me to come home as soon as possible. It was an emergency. That was what the message had said. I’d thought he had an accident or something, so, I was rushing to get here. I didn’t know which was my left or right foot as I stumbled and fell, trying to reach home in time. But what did I find when I got here? A note on the table, beside the white envelope that contained that letter.

  What was he thinking? At the rate I was going, I wouldn’t even pass the first year of university if Pa kept calling me out to do errands for him like this.

  Use the post office for once, Pa. Surely he could just drop this letter off at the post office and be done with it. Why use me?

  Then again, why did I bother to ask this silly question? It was because I wasn’t good at anything else except for errands like this. I wasn’t beautiful, so no one really took a second look at me, unlike my sister Amelia, who was the star of her Arts school. In fact, I could blend in with the furniture very well. Sometimes, Pa and Amelia couldn’t even tell the difference between me and the couch.

  Despite all these negative comments about my appearance, though, I’d never been bothered by this. Brown hair with a dusting of freckles on my nose and green catlike eyes, I considered myself to be quite cute.

  But back to Pa, though. I wondered where he was right then. I’d definitely give him an earful when I saw him.

  I went to search the house. It was empty, no one inside, not Pa or Amelia.

  Where had they gone? At this hour, Pa should have been in his office, and Amelia should have been home doing the cooking. She didn’t have class until late this afternoon.

  I picked the letter up in my hand, dismissing Pa’s absence for now. I examined the address. Upper East Side, Manhattan. It didn’t look familiar to me.

  Maybe I should put a few stamps on it and slot it in the postbox. That’d save me time. I recalled some stamps stashed away in my backpack somewhere. But Pa did say to deliver this letter by hand. And there was also the case of the licorice. It was tempting me next to the envelope.

  “Humph!” I huffed to myself. Who does he think he is, bribing me with candy? It’s not like I’m five years old anymore. I can live without candy. Especially licorice.

  I was now walking along the streets of Islington Hill, chewing the licorice. How could I resist a bribe such as this licorice Pa bought for me? He knew it was my one weakness and he used it to his full advantage. I was surprised my teeth weren’t covered with holes yet, what with the amounts of sweets I ate. But then again, my oral hygiene skills were spectacular.

  After the initial shock, I took the bus and walked to deliver this letter. I was sure whatever contents were in the envelope, they must be something important. Maybe Pa doesn’t trust
the post because it might go missing. A sense of pride filled my chest.

  “All right, Jenny. Let’s deliver this letter for Pa and make him proud.”

  Cory Mansion, as stated on the address, was part of a well-established suburb in Upper East Side, Manhattan. If it weren’t for the naked Adonis statue sitting in front of the huge fountain, with only a loincloth covering his private part, I was sure I’d have missed it altogether.

  Adonis really is beautiful, even though he’s made out of white marble. But imagine seeing a real live man that looks like Adonis. He’d be the god of all passion, a person that would totally captivate my heart.
