“I think you’ll want more of what we shared last night. There are other things to try, Aubrey.” She turned a deep shade of pink and I chuckled. “I also want to have fun and go on dates. I want to know you, well more about you.”
“I can do that. Cammie told me that having fun is what I need right now.” She agreed as something warm washed through me.
“Do you have an apartment?” I asked as she laughed. “Yeah, that’s right. You kicked him to the curb?” She nodded. “Does your sister live there now?”
“No, she has a place with a roommate right now. She’s been staying with me since everything happened, but she’ll be back to work soon enough.” Aubrey smiled at me as I nodded.
“Yes. The catering company.” I verified as she nodded. They were one of the best and I always asked for them for my band as well as recommending them to friends. I knew that Cammie was a busy woman, but she obviously loved her sister. That was obvious in the way she looked at Aubrey last night.
“She helped me a lot with my work the last week. She could be a copywriter if she wanted to, but she loves the social aspect of catering. She’s good at it.” Aubrey blushed. “I guess you know that, or at least your friend does. You’ve never…slept with her? Right?” Horror crossed her face, and I chucked as I tore off a piece of toast.
“No. I don’t sleep with every woman that speaks to me.” I assured her, knowing that it was the truth now.
“The waitress?” Aubrey pressed as I ran a hand through my hair. She had me there.
“Once,” I admitted as she nodded. “It wasn’t even recently. Last year but she keeps going for more. I was in a weird place, Aubrey.”
“I can’t feel insecure because of Kyle. This isn’t him and has nothing to do with him. I need to try to not think too hard about who you are. I do want to hang out.” She admitted, pushing away her plate. She’d nibbled here and there but I’d caught her off guard with my idea. I’d make up for that with dinner soon.
“Good. We’ll take it slow since we probably both want to keep it light.” She nodded and sipped her coffee again.
She told me that she needed to get some work done when we left, and I suspected she needed some time to herself. She probably wanted to talk to Cammie about me, but I knew Aubrey wasn’t the type to gossip. What she told Cammie would be between them. I drove her home and kissed her goodbye sweetly by her door, longing to carry her inside and have my way with her.
She walked inside, and I listened to the door lock before walking to my car. Breakfast had been great, and it was private. They always offered me that, but I noticed that Aubrey took note of my close relationship with the staff. I’d explain that later.
I went home and crashed for a while, getting up for coffee and a sandwich that evening. I’d made a point of getting Aubrey’s number before leaving her and I glanced at my phone on the couch beside me. I had a movie playing low in the background as I jotted down words, thinking about a hundred things at once.
I heard something at the door, glancing up to see the lock turning. Jacob walked in with a large backpack and I greeted him with a broad smile. “Great timing.”
“D. You’re back. How was the tour?” Jacob asked as he set the bag gently on the floor. I knew that it contained his cameras and equipment. “Want a beer?”
“Yeah, man.” He walked over to the fridge and got two bottles before sitting on the couch. He was wearing the usual flight outfit: worn jeans, a loose Henley, and his favorite flip flops. His hair was long and loose around his shoulders and I shook my head at him. “You look like a damn surfer with that floppy hair and tan.”
“I was in Belize doing a shoot for a new resort. Is this an appropriate look for that?” Jacob asked, his eyes shimmering at me with mirth. He looked a lot like me and some people thought we were twins at times. We were close as hell and I liked that I helped him with a stable place to live. He could live at home still but with the twins being seventeen and busy as fuck, this was easier. We both needed our own space.
“Yeah. You must have had the women dropping their bikinis for you.” I joked as he chuckled. While he was good-looking like me, Jacob wasn’t a man whore. He had his fun when he wanted to, but he was all about work.
“There were some gorgeous women there. Lots of tourists.” Jacob assured me as I rested my head against the couch. “So? The tour?”
“It was awesome. Busy as shit and it’s great to be home, but good.” I replied, opening the beer and taking a sip. “We’re going to work on songs for the new album. I’ll be here for a while. We should visit the family soon.”
“Yes. I miss Mom’s cooking. I’ve eaten everywhere but a home lately.” He sighed and sipped his beer.
“I hear that.” Catering is always good, but nothing beats my mother’s cooking. I wondered what Aubrey’s mom had been like. We talked about our time away and the highlights and I realized how much I missed my brother.
“There’s something different about you,” Jacob noted a few hours later after we watched a basketball game.
“Yeah?” I asked as I glanced at my phone. I was considering sending Aubrey a text since she didn’t have my number.
“You’ve been staring at your phone all night. That’s not like you.” Jacob was right. I used the phone as needed for band stuff, but little was personal unless I was talking to my family. “Is everything okay at the house?”
“It’s fine. I was just thinking about sending a text.” I replied as I glanced at him.
“Did you meet someone?” Jacob asked as I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “Did you actually get a girl’s number?”
“I did, but she doesn’t have mine.” I admitted as he raised his brows at me.
“You want her to have it?” Jacob pressed, and I nodded. I picked up my phone and opened the screen, finally pulling up the number I’d saved in my car after dropping her off. I tried to think of something casual and fun and sent it off, setting it down to jot something else in my notebook. He sat back and gazed at the TV before my phone chimed a few minutes later.
“Huh.” I mock glared at him and read the message. She seemed happy to hear from me and responded sweetly. Aubrey was a sweet girl though sinfully delicious in bed and I was going to enjoy every moment of her that I could.
Chapter Eight
Aubrey
“It’s about time.” Cammie sang as I walked through the door of my apartment. She had a key, and I expected her there at any time, but I flushed now. “Where were you, hussy? You left with David fucking Foster and you’re just now coming home?”
“Oh, Cammie.” I moaned as I dropped my purse on the kitchen counter. I noticed that she had an open bottle of wine and grabbed another glass before I sat down with her. “I… that was incredible.”
“You spent the night with him?” Cammie verified as I slowly nodded. “That’s a great fuck you to Kyle. I think that he needs to find out.”
I wish that was all it was. I longed for it to be a rebound and something I didn’t want more of. A part of me wanted to scream it out to the world so Kyle would find out, but I wasn’t a petty girl. I wished him well deep down and decided somewhere over the last few hours that David was right. I was lucky to have the chance to end it without a divorce.
“No, he doesn’t. I am just glad to be done with him.” I told her as she clapped slowly.
“Well said.” She held up her glass, and I poured my own wine before clinking mine to hers. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you.” I replied as I smiled weakly. “He’s more than just the hot guy on a stage.”
“I know. I’ve seen him a lot working backstage. David has his moments of man whoring but he’s a nice guy. He doesn’t treat us like shit like some rockers do.” She smiled brightly and searched my face. “Wait. You really got to know him, didn’t you?”
“I think so. I mean, we spent a lot of time in bed. A lot. He is so intense. But we talked as well. He knows about Kyle and I told him a little about Mom. He was here earli
er so I could change and saw the pictures.” I smiled at her and she raised a brow. It took Kyle a little while to know all about Mom and now it didn’t matter. He was gone and hadn’t even been as nice about it as he should have been. He had a trust fund and rich parents that had no real connection.
“What is his family like?” Cammie asked with interest before sipping his wine.
“He has a brother that lives with him and I think he mentioned twin sisters. His parents are still together.” I replied as she nodded. “He’s close to them and I loved the look on his face when he talked about them, as brief as it was.”
“Are you going to see him again?” Cammie asked as I giggled.
“He wants to. He has my number, and the ball is in his court. We’ll see what happens.” I shrugged, trying to be casual.
“At any rate, he gave you the best orgasm of your life. Right?” She laughed, and I rested my head in my hands. “A night with David Foster. Whether you see him again, it is something to remember.”
“It is.” I replied and wrinkled my nose as I shook my head. I wanted him to call me. Cammie and I got some more work done and sent off to clients over lunch since I barely ate this morning. We talked about the concert and what she did with the guitarist after I left, making me pretend to vomit.
“Brent is a good guy.” She defended herself as I giggled. “I’ve seen him before and we hook up when he’s in town.”
“David told me.” I taunted her as she rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Of course, he did.” She said as I laughed. “Gossip queen.”
“He knows what his friends do.” I defended David, and we both laughed. “I won’t shout it from the rooftops just like I won’t for myself.”
“I know. I trust you implicitly.” Cammie told me with a soft smile as she gazed at me. “At any rate, it was good to see you out there letting loose. I know the last thing you want to do it get serious about someone and he might be perfect for that.”
“He might.”
We were watching movies later when my phone chimed from the table. Cammie reached for it and I fought her for it as she laughed. “Unknown. I wonder who it is.”
“Brat!” I called out as I grabbed the phone and brought it in front of my face.
D: Hey, Aubrey. I had a great time with you last night and this morning.
“Oh my God. It’s David.” I breathed as Cammie held out her hand.
“Shit. He wants to see you again.” She told me as I drank the last of my wine. “What are you going to say?”
“I… ummm. I don’t know.” I stammered as I tried to think.
A: I had a good time, too. How are you?
“I want to tell him I miss him,” I murmured before I stared at Cammie. “Did I say that out loud?”
“You did.” She murmured, and I flushed a dark shade of pink. “Say something. Say that.”
“No.” I protested as I looked down at the vibrating phone.
D: What are you doing tomorrow? How does lunch sound? I feel like I ruined your breakfast.
A: I got a lot of work in today. I think lunch sounds great.
D: My brother is back in town. Do you mind if he comes along if the asshole is awake?
I must have looked shocked because Cammie took the phone from me.
“Shit. You’re meeting his brother already?” Cammie asked as she read the message again. “Is he as hot as David?”
“I don’t know.” I told her as I took a deep breath.
A: Of course not. I’d love to meet him.
That wasn’t entirely truthful. I was scared to death to meet his brother since that seemed like something for us to do when we were more serious. Of course, this could be just a simple lunch and conversation. I didn’t need to over think it.
D: I’ll call you in the morning when I know more. Unless you need company tonight?
I blushed.
A: Cam is here tonight so I’m fine. I’ll see you tomorrow. Get some rest.
He didn’t respond, and I pulled my hair in a messy bun. I was sweating, and he wasn’t even in the room. If she wasn’t here, would I ask him over like a horny teenager?
Cammie spent the night but went to work for a meeting in the morning. I got up to make coffee, looking out of the window at the distant city buildings as I sipped it, wondering what today held.
I looked at my phone on the counter where it normally charged overnight. Last night, it was beside me. Did I think David was going to text me at all hours of the night?
I heard the generic ring tone and stepped towards it, seeing David’s name flashing across the screen. I answered, trying to sound casual. “Hey, you.”
“Hi, Aubrey. Sleep well?” His voice was low and rough, and I shivered. I remembered what it did to me when he was between my legs and I pressed my lips together.
“I did. You?” I queried as I leaned against my counter.
“Yeah. I was up late writing, but I got a few hours in. I swear I think I sleep better during the day.” He laughed softly, and I smiled, knowing just what he meant. My hours were off as well. “Does lunch still sound good?”
“It sounds great. Will your brother be there?” I asked as he sighed.
“If my time is jacked up, his is worse. He’s sleeping off the jet lag.” Admittedly, I was a little relieved. “How about I get you at noon? I have all afternoon.”
“That sounds great. Is it a casual place?” I asked as I reached for my coffee again.
“Absolutely. I’m not into fancy places all that much.” He responded, and I nodded. I knew that about him.
“I’ll see you soon.” We ended the call, and I drained the last of my coffee before going to take a shower. I washed my hair and used my lemon body wash as I wondered what to wear. Do I wear a lot of makeup today? I had no idea how to date a goddamn singer.
He was just David. He was a man just like anyone else.
I got out of the shower and dried off, running a comb through my hair. It was down to my shoulders now and I looked at the already forming curls with a sigh. I had to accept them since I was so lazy about doing anything that took effort. I let them go and brushed a light layer of powder over my pale skin before adding a little shadow and mascara to my eyes. It made them look darker, and I longed for Cammie’s blue ones yet again.
I walked into my bedroom and looked out of the window at the sunny sky. I knew that it was a bit chilly out given that it was fall but I appreciated the rare sight, nonetheless. I pulled out some soft, worn jeans and a clingy lavender sweater before searching through my underwear drawer. I went for comfort most of the time. It was best for me and Kyle didn’t seem to care what I wore. I dug around and found a set with gray lace boy shorts and a matching bra that I bought with a gift card from Cammie.
I pulled them on first and dabbed my cherry perfume gently on my neck. I looked in the mirror and admired my curves as I added it to my wrists. I had a little extra weight, but I didn’t mind. I worked out a few times a week but the thing with Kyle had thrown me off my game.
When I was done, I pulled on the clothes with some soft boots that would work for any place we might walk. I finally put something in my hair and let it do its crazy thing before glossing my lips with something clear. I liked the deep pink tone of them and often just highlighted that.
There was a knock at the door as I walked into the living room and smiled. I headed over to open it, smiling widely as I found David on the other side. He was dressed in jeans and a black thermal with a matching beanie. I smiled as I asked if he wanted to come inside and he nodded.
David closed the door behind him and pressed me to the door for a long kiss. I slipped my arms around his waist and closed my eyes as he tilted his head. “I missed you.” He whispered before kissing me again.
“You did?” I asked before he parted my lips with his tongue. David nodded and kissed me harder as I wondered if we were even going to make it out of the apartment.
“I think we should get that food before I eat
you,” he murmured as he pulled back to look at me. I wouldn’t mind but I nodded in agreement.
We left the apartment after I fixed myself up and he led me to the car. He let me in and started the engine as I smiled, realizing that I missed him. David kissed me one more time as I protested, laughing as he pulled out of the parking lot.
We went to a restaurant that was on the water and he led me to the back patio. It boasted a large seafood selection, and I smiled as I looked around. The waitress came by, greeting David much like the woman at the other place. I decided they were friendly and seemed to know him well. It didn’t mean that he had slept with them and I could appreciate that they thought he was gorgeous. He was here with me tonight.
We ate large platters of seafood and he asked me more about my mom. I told him all about her this time and even teared up as I did so. He leaned across the table and wiped at the corner of my eye as I smiled, needing his touch.
We left soon after that and he pulled me close to him. “I have my brother home now, but you live alone, right?” David asked as I chuckled.
“Yes. I can tell Cammie to stay home. Are you trying to get into my pants?” I teased as he sucked my earlobe into his mouth.
“Totally,” David murmured hoarsely as I leaned against him. This man was my crush, my fantasy. I wanted to pinch myself to wake up from this dream in some ways. In others, I knew that he was a caring person that wanted to know me. This wasn’t just sex even though it was something we both clearly thought a lot about.
We headed back to my place, and I unlocked the door as I looked around. There were so many memories of Kyle here and they would be wiped clean today. The bed that we shared would be filled with another man, a better one. I’d start making new memories for my new life and I couldn’t wait.
I dropped my keys on the table, knowing that Cammie knew to stay away tonight. David confided that she was with Brent and I shook my head. “Do they like each other?” I asked as he took my hand and led me down the hall. I told him which one my door and he was pushed it open slowly, turning to cup my face and kiss me.
