Hesitantly, Joe ran his hand up the length of it. Derek groaned low, so Joe did it again.
“My turn,” Derek said, his voice raspy.
Biting his lip, Joe eased out of his sweatpants, keeping his gaze averted in case Derek looked at his cock with disdain.
“Beautiful,” Derek said softly, running a finger along it from the base to the head. “I couldn’t have imagined anything more perfect.”
Joe felt his face heat up at the compliment, even though he was certain Derek had to be exaggerating. “It’s only…” he stammered.
“It’s you. One part of the whole. Not the most important part,” Derek added, smiling as he bent to kiss Joe. “This…the look in your eyes when we kiss, and the beating of your heart. Those are what make me feel like the luckiest man in the world.”
Joe savored his words, wishing he had the ability to be as…poetic, he guessed.
“Damn it,” Derek muttered, sitting back on his heels. When Joe’s eyes widened in dismay, Derek said, “Don’t worry. There’s nothing wrong except I wasn’t thinking.” He leaned over the side of the bed, giving Joe a momentary glimpse of a perfect ass. “We need these,” Derek said a moment later, showing Joe the condoms and lube, which he set on the nightstand.
Joe sucked in a breath. He knew why, and suddenly he was afraid.
“For this,” Derek continued as he opened one of the packets then rolled the condom over Joe’s cock. Looking squarely at Joe, he asked, “Has anyone ever gone down on you?”
Joe shook his head. “I’ve done…” He flushed with embarrassment.
Derek touched his cheek. “I know. You told me. It’s nothing to be ashamed of because you had no choice. I do, and I want you to know what it’s like.”
“What if I come?”
Derek grinned. “That’s sort of the idea, so relax and enjoy it.”
If I can. Joe wasn’t certain it would happen. Sex had never brought him pleasure. Will it be different because it’s him?
His hands clenched when Derek took the head of his cock into his mouth, slowly stroking his tongue over it and around the base. When he sucked it, Joe fell into the intense pleasure that washed over him, instinctively arching up, wanting more, all his fear evaporating as Derek took him deeper into his mouth. When Derek cupped his balls, rolling them between his fingers, Joe was lost. He came, gasping as his orgasm consumed him.
The next thing he was aware of was Derek’s arms around him, holding him close as he came down. He looked into Derek’s eyes which were dark with emotion, and then lowered his gaze to his lips. “That…I never…” he whispered.
“I think I like that idea,” Derek replied to Joe’s unfinished sentence. “Being the first person to show you that sex is something that can be enjoyed full out when you’re with someone who cares.”
“Can we, can I…?” Joe wrapped his hand around Derek’s hard member, moving it slowly up and down.
“Kid, you can do anything you want with that.”
“I’m not…” Joe started to protest before he saw Derek grin and knew he’d been teasing—a throwback to the first time they’d met. He laughed. “Had to go there, didn’t you?” Then, seconds later, he said, “It happened!” when the realization hit him. “I’m not afraid anymore. I’ll never be afraid, because it’s you and we’re together.”
“Which is the way it should be,” Derek replied, tracing a finger over Joe’s lips before kissing him. When Joe opened to his questing tongue, the kiss deepened. Then, breaking it, Derek said, laughter and desire in his voice, “I think you were about to do something with this.” He took Joe’s hand, pressing it to his cock.
Joe did, after sheathing it, ecstatic when Derek came with a shout that echoed through the room.
“Next time,” Joe said when Derek had recovered, “Maybe we can, you know, go all the way?”
Derek hugged him tightly. “I can’t think of anything I want more.” He chuckled. “Well, other than to get rid of these…” He stripped off their condoms. “Then get some sleep, or we’ll be dead on our feet come morning.”
“And maybe shower?”
“Not a bad idea,” Derek agreed.
They did shower, together, keeping it to just that in deference to the late hour. Before they returned to Joe’s bed, Derek let Sherwat out of his room. As soon as Joe and Derek were curled together under the covers, the dog jumped onto the bed, lying at their feet.
“Who knew?” Joe said softly.
Already half asleep, Derek murmured, “I did.”
Joe snorted. “You don’t even know what I was going to say.”
“Did too, and I knew long before you did that we belong together.”
“We do,” Joe agreed, snuggling into his embrace. “And I’ll never let you forget it.”
“As if I would.” Derek kissed the nape of Joe’s neck. “Now, go to sleep.”
“I am, I am.” Joe did, with no fear of nightmares. He knew he’d seen the last of them, and that his ‘wishing dream’ had finally come true.

ABOUT EDWARD KENDRICK
Born and bred in Cleveland, I earned a degree in technical theater, later switched to costuming, and headed to NYC. Finally seeing the futility of trying to become rich and famous in the Big Apple, I joined VISTA—Volunteers in Service to America—ending up in Chicago for three years. Then it was on to Denver where I put down roots and worked as a costume designer until I retired in 2007.
I began writing a few years ago after joining an online fanfic group. Two friends and I then started a group for writers, where they could post any story they wished no matter the genre or content. Since then, for the last five years, I’ve been writing for publication—my first book came out in February of 2011. Most, but not all, of my work is M/M, either mildly erotic or purely ‘romantic.’ More often than not it involves a mystery or action/adventure, and is sometimes paranormal to boot.
