  Chapter 1

  —Tina

“Yo, Tina. You home?” Matt calls out, the door to our apartment closing behind him.

“In here.” I smirk to myself and light the final candle before crawling onto the center of his bed. The bedroom glows from the tealight candles I have placed around the room to set the mood. Tonight’s the night. I’m done waiting. On my knees in the red lace teddy I wait for him to come find me.

The knob twists and the door pushes open. He stops just short of flicking the light on when he notices me. Rubbing a hand through his hair his jaw ticks. “What the hell are you doing?”

I smile at him and flutter my lashes. “Waiting for you? I’ve been saving this for a special occasion, and I thought tonight seems special. It’s the anniversary of the first time you asked me to be your girlfriend.”

“Put some clothes on.” He covers his face and backs out of the room. “My parents will be here soon to take us to dinner.”

“So cancel. I don’t want to go to dinner. I want to be with you, Matt.” I crawl to the foot of the bed and follow him out to the hallway of our apartment. Touching his shoulders, I hug him from behind. “Don’t you want to be with me?”

“Of course I do,” he snaps and pulls away. “You know how I feel about this though. You said you understood.”

“I was in high school when we made that promise. I’m a woman now, and I want you to touch me. You can’t even look at me. Matty?”

A heavy sigh leaves his lips. Turning around he grips my shoulders with his firm hands. “I love you, but I’m not going to change my mind.”

My bottom lip trembles. “I can’t keep on like this.” I place my hand over his and slide our hands down my chest. “I want passion. To be wanted. Don’t you feel anything right now?” On my tiptoes, I press my lips to his. Matt’s lips move against mine but there is no feeling to the kiss. No burning desire. I pull back. “If it’s like this now…” A tear slides down my cheek. “It’s not going to get better.”

“I want you, Tina, just not like this.” He fingers the strap of my lingerie, and it snaps against my skin. “You’re worth waiting for. I thought you believed the same for me.”

I swallow the bile down that’s creeping up my throat. “I want more than sleeping in the room across the hall from you. That’s not going to change. We’re going to get married. There is nothing stopping us but you.”

A knock sounds at the door.

  “Go get dressed for dinner.”

“No. You go. Tell them I had to work over.” The last thing I want to do right now is go to dinner with his parents.

  “You sure?”

“Yup,” I croak. “We can talk when you get back.” Only when he gets back…I won’t be here. I can’t keep pretending things between us are okay. They aren’t. Far from it. He starts toward the door, and I slip into my bedroom, tears rolling down my cheeks. I’ve been with Matt since we were kids. We’re adults now. We live together, and he can’t even do more than kiss me. I thought I was okay with waiting, but I’m not.

I don’t want to keep doing this—waiting for him to truly notice me. Somedays I wonder if he even loves me or if we have stayed together this long out of habit. Swiping my fingers under my eyes, I pull my luggage out from the closet. Ending a relationship that has lasted more than half my life should hurt more than this, shouldn’t it? I thought I’d feel devastated, but I feel…relief. Freedom.

I change into something comfy and pack my belongings. Tonight I can stay at the hotel where I work at. Tomorrow I will figure out where I go from there. I just know that wherever I go it will be somewhere Matt isn’t. Before I leave, I slide the engagement ring from my finger and place it on his dresser next to his deodorant along with a note telling him I can no longer keep doing this. I can’t pretend to be happy when I am anything but.

  **

Opening the door to the bakery where Camreigh is working. The bell rings signaling my entrance. Camreigh’s gaze snaps to mine and she squeals. My bestie rushes from behind the counter and hugs my neck. “What are you doing here?

“I missed my best friend. You moved an hour away. I can’t see you every day like I used to.” It’s not a lie. Since Camreigh moved to Drag Creek I never see her.

“Want a cupcake?” She grins and motions to the display case.

“Duh. I want one with chocolate frosting.”

“No chocolate for me. The baby doesn’t like it. It gives me the worst heartburn. Char, I’m taking a break,” she calls toward the back and we make our way to a table.

Peeling the foil wrapper back that hugs my cupcake I take a big bite and let out a moan. “God, that’s good.”

“I know, right? I’m going to gain so much damn weight working here with all this temptation.” She licks the vanilla frosting on her cupcake. “You going to tell me why you’re really here?” My bestie knows me all too well. I have never been great at keeping secrets from her.

“So, I did it. I told Matt that I wanted more. He never touches me, and you were right, I want to be with someone who wants to be with me. I want a man who can’t keep his hands off me.”

“Aw, babe. You deserve so much better than that.”

“I do. I gave him an ultimatum,” I confess. My lips turn down into a frown, but I still think I made the right choice.

  “What did he say?”

“That I was being ridiculous and that if I loved him, I wo
uldn’t pressure him.” We both roll our eyes. “I told him what I want and if he can’t give it to me then I don’t see the point of us staying together. And then I gave him his ring back, and I packed my bags.”

Camreigh’s eyes go wide. “What? No way. I’m so proud of you.”

“Well um…I was wondering…do you have room for me on your couch just until I find something. I have a little money saved, but the apartment is in Matt’s name, and I can’t stay there.”

“Of course. What about your job?”

  I shrug. “I quit.”

  “You loved that place.”

“Not really. I liked it because I got an hour lunch that I could spend with Matt, and we would have gotten a great discount on the ballroom when we got married, but I feel stupid and relieved. I felt like there was something wrong with me, but I see now its him with the problem.”

“Good. You deserve to be happy.”

“So do you,” I remind her.

“Yeah. Yeah.” She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a small ring of keys. “My apartment is upstairs. Make yourself at home.”

“You’re the best.” I snatch the keys from her and go out to move my car around back.

Matt keeps blowing up my phone, but I have nothing to say to him. I send him to voicemail and drag two of my bags up the stairs. Camreigh’s apartment is small but cute. I know I can’t stay here with her forever This is temporary until I figure out what I’m going to do. I feel a bit crazy and wild. I’ve never done anything like this in my life. My whole life has revolved around being Matt’s girlfriend. Holy shit, I’m single. I don’t even have a job. Panic and excitement bubbles in my chest and up my throat.

My folks are going to kill me for not telling them I left Matt. My father loves him, but I think Mom will be happy. She was always after me to never settle. I was so convinced that Matt was it—my one true love, but now that I have opened my eyes, I realize I was complacent. Just going through the motions. I don’t want to be that girl anymore.

I’m ready to find myself and be truly happy.

  **

After a shower and a nap Camreigh is off work, and I swear I think she just told me that we’re going to have dinner with her baby daddy and one of his biker buddies.

“We’re going to dinner with who?”

“Sawyer and Vegas. I know it sounds crazy. And no, I haven’t told him that I am having his baby. He just sort of showed up to help me move in and he remembered me, and one thing led to another and we had sex again three times.”

I giggle. “He must have devil dick.”

Her eyes grow wide and her mouth drops. “Devil dick?”

“Yeah. Dick so good it must be possessed by the devil himself.”

“What the hell would you know about devil dick?”

I huff, “I know stuff.” I may be a virgin, but it isn’t like I haven’t touched myself or watched porn before. Matt left me with no choice on plenty of occasions but to pleasure myself.

“What kind of stuff?” Camreigh smirks at me through the reflection in the mirror as she touches up her makeup.

I bump her hip with mine and shove my way to the sink to fix my hair. “None of your beeswax. Now move and tell me about Vegas.”

“He’s good looking if you find serial killer’s attractive.”

“What?!” I hold a hand to my chest. What kind of guy is she mixed up with?

“I’m kidding don’t spaz out on me. Though I still owe you for that whole concert disaster. He’s cute. A total bad ass. Tattoos, dark eyes. A real flirt.”

“Okay. That sounds promising. I’m nervous. I’ve never gone out with anyone but Matt. And hey that disaster brought you this.” I pat her tummy. Matt’s cousin bought concert tickets and we set Camreigh up with him. It was a date from hell for her. We pulled off at some bar for her to use the bathroom and she found her way into Sawyer’s bed. She doesn’t know it, but I envy that side of her that just does what she wants without a care. I’ve always been a good girl. Never taken chances but I have a fresh start. A clean slate. I can be whoever I wanna be.

“I know but don’t think of it as a date. We’re just four people and a toddler eating a meal together. And what the hell do I do about my situation with Sawyer? I never planned on seeing him again and now he is inviting me to dinner with him and his kid.”

“Just breathe. Stress isn’t good for you and the baby. You’ll know when the timing is right.”

“Promise you won’t bring it up until I find a way to tell him.”

“I promise. Now what are you going to wear? Better yet what the hell am I going to wear?”

Excitement filters through me as I wonder what this Vegas guy looks like. If he looks anything like Sawyer…I’m in trouble. There has only ever been Matt and now that I am away from him it hits me square in the chest what we had wasn’t love. It was friendship, a comfortable friendship that was never going anywhere. I should feel bad for being excited to meet Sawyer’s friend, but I don’t. I’m intrigued.

  Chapter 2

  —Vegas

“Can’t believe you got me in the kitchen helping you cook and shit all for a woman. She must have some magic pussy.” I don’t cook for women. I’m a biker. Bitches wait on me hand and foot.

“Shut the fuck up. Thea might hear you, asshole.”

  “Is her friend hot?”

“She has a bit of a hair on her upper lip and talks with a lisp.”

  “The fuck?”

“I have no fucking clue. You’ll just have to see when she gets here.”

He better not do me wrong and set me up with some ugly beastly bitch. I walk into the living room to see what Thea is getting into. She’s playing with her blocks. I hear the sound of a car pulling up. I scoop Thea up and peer through the slits of the blinds. The passenger door opens and out steps this pixie of a woman with blonde curls.

“Whactu’ think, jellybean? Think she’s pretty?”

  “I dunno.”

“Come on.” We go back to the couch while Saw goes out to greet the women. Camreigh is the chick Sawyer’s been dicking.

They strut in and my heart seizes in my chest. Camreigh’s friend is stunning. Blonde curls that hang over her shoulders. Big doe eyes with flecks of green and gold in them. Bow shaped lips. Sun kissed skin and a sprinkle of freckles on her nose.

  “This is Tina.”

I move up off my spot on the couch and glide right over to Tina. Those pretty eyes flick up to meet my gaze. Her lashes flutter and her berry stained lips stretch into a smile. “Hi.” Her voice is whispery and sultry. The sound travels straight to the head of my cock.

Fuck me. I am already imagining those pretty lips wrapped around my dick. “Name’s Vegas.”

“Like that’s your real name or what your club calls you?”

“You don’t know me like that, but you will.”

Cocking her head to the side she licks her lips and mouths off, “You think so?”

  “Baby, I know so.”

  “I’m not your baby.”

  “Not yet.”

“You think you’re real cute, don’t you? Bet you have no trouble using those lines.”

I shrug. “Is it working on you?”

“I’ll get back to you.” Tina saunters on past me following behind everyone else to the table.

“Damn. She’s got a sweet ass,” I mutter under my breath, enjoying the view as she goes. I pull out the chair next to Tina and she rolls her eyes. I never back down from a challenge. “Where are you from?”

“Around. I’m in the middle of a move. I’m crashing on Camreigh’s couch until I figure things out.”

“I’ve got a king-sized bed with plenty of room for you.”

“I don’t even know you. You think what? You can smile at me and pay me a few compliments and I’ll just fall into your bed?” Her lips curve into an amused smirk.

I shrug. “Never had any complaints.” I pile my plate full and start digging in.

  Tina’s h
azel eyes flicker up and down my face. “Maybe so, but there’s a first time for everything.”

“Sweetheart, I know you find me attractive.”

Tapping her chin, she stares at me. “You’re okay.”

“Okay?” I balk. What the fuck? I must be losing my damn touch.

Tina laughs and brings a napkin to her mouth. “Fine. I think you’re incredibly sexy, and if I was a one-night stand kinda girl, I’d take you up on the offer to try out that bed.”

“Like you said there’s a first time for everything.”

“You don’t give up do you. Like a damn dog with a bone.”

“When I want something, I don’t relent.” I lean in close, whispering in her ear, “And, sweetheart…I’m gonna taste that pussy and tap that sweet ass. The sooner you give in, the sooner you’ll be screaming my name.”

A pink hue spreads over her cheeks and flushes down her neck. “I bet you’ve never been serious about a thing in your life.”

“I’m serious about getting you naked and under me.”

“I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.”

I frown. Shit. Maybe I have garlic breath. I get up and go to the fridge like I’m looking for something. Bent down using the refrigerator door for privacy I cup my hands and blow my breath into them. I don’t smell anything. What’s with this chick? Any day of the week I can say a few dirty lines to a bitch and panties start dropping, but Tina isn’t like that. Hell, Camreigh fucked Sawyer within an hour of meeting the bastard.

Sometimes all I gotta do is flash a smile or wink at women and they rub all up on me wanting to fuck a biker. I sit back down next to her at the table and put my hand on her upper thigh. She stares down at my hand.

“What are you doing?” She flushes and it makes me want to see how far I can push her.

“Nothing. You had a little something.” I brush at her jeans, rubbing her leg, closer to her inner thigh. She wiggles in her seat and I remove my hand. Tina can fight me all she wants, but I’m going to have her. When I look at her, I get this crazy feeling like we were supposed to meet. “You found a job yet?”
