“Shoes and jewelry,” I muttered to myself, looking around my room for the items in question. Shoes, tick. There was a pair of killer, black, lace-up stiletto boots poking out from under my bed.
After they were on my feet, I hurried back into my bathroom to put my jewelry on. I was already wearing a necklace—duh—but I hooked some little earrings in and clipped on my favorite bracelets. Okay, technically they weren’t mine, but what was I supposed to do with all the jewelry Hatshepsut had left me wearing? I guess I could have left it all in her tomb, but at the time I’d been more concerned with getting our asses home.
Anyway, the gorgeously detailed, twisted bronze bracelet was a piece I wore almost every day. Hunter had teased me that it technically made me a graverobber, and now it was known as my graverobber’s bracelet. I loved it.
Satisfied, I started to leave the bathroom, then did a doubletake at the mirror.
What the...
I stepped closer, lifted my hand, and wiped the condensation from the glass.
“Fucking claws,” I gasped, clapping a hand to my lips and staring in horror at my reflection. Panicked, I turned in a circle just to confirm that there was no one else in the bathroom with me before peering back into the mirror.
Peering back at me... wasn’t me. I mean yeah, she had my eyes and the same dark bronze skin, but that? That wasn’t me. That was Bast.
“Surprise,” my reflection whispered at me, and my heart thundered so hard I worried about cardiac arrest. “We’re not even close to done, daughter of my power. Not even close.”
The smirk Bast gave me in the mirror sent so much fear rippling through me I lashed out, grabbing my hairdryer from the vanity and smashing the mirror with it.
As the glass shattered and dropped into the sink, my chest heaved and my breath came in short, sharp gasps. Holy shit. Holy fucking shit.
“Margaret?” Raze boomed, his boots clattering through my house and into my bedroom. “What happened?” he demanded, looking from my broken mirror to the hairdryer in my hand to my face, which—I was pretty sure—looked like I’d seen a ghost.
Because I had.
Dropping the hairdryer, I launched myself into his arms, shuddering into his tight hug, and tucked my face into the crook of his neck. My feet were dangling off the ground, and I didn’t even care. I was fucking terrified.
“Bast,” I sobbed out. “She’s back.”
