by Eva Devon

It was true that her husband had largely given that to her and she would never forget it. Being a duchess had changed her life and she loved every moment of it, not just because of the power that she had, but because of the way that Adam supported her, because of the way that he encouraged her.

She turned to her husband, who held out his gloved hand to her.

"Will you dance with me?" he asked.

"Of course I shall," she said. "And I even promise not to step on your foot."

He smiled down at her, his usually rakish smile still wolfish, but gentler, loving, tender. "Please don't promise such things," he said. "I like it when you step on my feet. All those fools don't step on my feet, but you, you step on my feet because you're usually thinking of something interesting and I can't wait to hear what you have to say."

She smiled up at him then and took his hand. Just that simple touch sent a thrill of anticipation down her body for when they would be alone.

As they stepped across the floor and onto the dance floor, she tilted her head back, proud to be married to him, proud that she was his, but more importantly, that he belonged to her just as much.

He slid his hand to the small of her back, rocking them back and forth until their bodies united in a single rhythm. Easily, he led her about the room, sweeping her in arcs across the floor. She knew that everyone was watching, that everyone was mystified at how she had gone from being London's most notorious spinster to one of the most powerful and beloved duchesses in the room.

It was a journey that she was still astonished she had made herself, but even more important was the journey that she had taken with Adam. The journey from fear of not knowing where her next cup of tea might come from, of being completely unloved, to having more than she could ever hope for was a marvel to her.

She had no idea what would come in the next days, the next month, the next years, but she knew one thing for certain as she nearly stepped upon her husband's foot and he caught her in his arms and swept her up—they would face the future together always, forever, and love would show them the way.
