“It was hard for me too.” Her eyes became shinier and a set of tears slipped down the corner of her eyes. “I missed you so much, Carter.”
“I missed you too.” He drew her back into his arms. Swiping his palm over her cheek, he said, “Don’t cry.”
“I’m not crying,” she denied. But as if to mock her, another set of tears slid from her eyes.
Chuckling, Carter kissed her forehead. “My pretty, pretty baby.” He kissed the tip of her nose then touched his lips to hers. His breath whispering against her lips, he murmured, “I love you.”
“I love you too.” She arched towards him and connected their lips again. This time it was more than just a peck. It was a real kiss designed to show him just how much she’d thought of him while they were parted. He returned the kiss with just as much fervor and emotion.
Nothing had changed about their situation. It was just as complicated as before. Sharon would still throw a fit if she found out that he was with Eve, and her parents would disapprove of them being together. Common sense claimed that being apart was still the right move. But common sense couldn’t ease the pain he felt when away from her. It couldn’t ease the loneliness or the sadness.
They’d tried being apart. It was too hard.
Now it was time to try being together. Carter had no idea where they’d end up or how their future looked, but as he held her, he swore that this time he’d stick to her like glue. Wherever this path led, they’d walk it together.
