The Dead Girl's Stilettos Page 18

by Quinn Avery

“I have to go.” She flung her arms around his neck, unable to stop the giant grin stretching across her lips. “My landlord refused to pack up my things and ship them out here for me—probably because she’s a sentimental old bird. She’s the type that makes me check in with her on the holidays to promise I had a big meal and didn’t cheat with fast food.”

His eyes narrowed. “What are you saying?”

“Your buddy J.J. called earlier today and chewed me a new one for leaving. He even tried bribing me with a job. I figured I owe it to him to see if there’s something there. I mean, he did help me save my sister. Maybe if it doesn’t work between the two of us, I’ll consider taking you up on your offer.”

“You’re saying I’m your second choice? That hurts, Squires.”

“Oh yeah? You should try getting passed over by your high school crush for someone who has more plastic in their body then their wallet.”

  “You mean—”

She silenced him with a kiss. Though unconvinced she was truly ready to live among the elite of Papaya Springs, she had a feeling as long as wealth and greed ran rampant in that pristine community, the less fortunate would need her help again soon.

  Acknowledgments

My writing career officially began in 2012, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting countless amazing souls along the way. It felt wonderful to finally follow the dream I’d had since I was a little girl, but it felt even better to have found my tribe.

To my rockstar arsenal of author friends—especially Tracy Broemmer, Diana Hicks, Leesa Bow, Aubrey Parr, Micki Fredricks, Sierra Hill, and Mira Lyn Kelly: you guys kept me going through the transition in genres. I’m nowhere near prolific enough to express just how much I appreciate each and every one of you! Your friendship is invaluable!

To my romance fans: special thanks for your loyalty over the years! Hope you enjoyed this one despite the lack of usual steam.

To my amazing editor, Jodi Henley: thank you for all your hard work in making this story shine! You truly went above and beyond my expectations. I missed working with you, and can’t wait for more future projects together!

To Najla Qamber: it finally happened! LOL! THANK YOU for creating this amazing cover with your gorgeous cousin, and most of all, thank you for being so patient with me through all the times I changed the name of the book over the years. I’m seriously crazy in love with everything about this cover!

To Corrie Hanson, Jenny Hanson, and my momma: thank you for always believing in me, and supporting me through every genre and project I’ve taken on!

To Josh Frommie: thanks for always taking the time to answer my bazaar questions, and thanks for serving our community!

To Laura Lynn: thank you for humoring me and letting me pick your brain!

To my dear friend, Maria Araya: thanks for helping me not sound like a fool. I’ll always be grateful that you’re my friend.

To my sweet friends, Michelle Zierke and Micki Fredricks, and my cousin April Sheldahl: I love that you’re always just a phone call away. Thank you for having my back on both the good and bad days.

To Sam’s friends Cineste, Faith, Kiersten, Tehya, and the two Jacobs (a/k/a the J.J.s): thanks for letting me steal your names (not that you had a choice)!
