And in fact, as she made her way into the bathroom, she nearly toppled over as she tried to pee on the stick while sitting on top of the toilet. She placed the cap back on and waited with her underwear around her ankles. She didn’t dare breathe. Two stripes meant pregnant. Just one meant not. All her life, through all of her “mistakes,” she’d only had one stripe. Never. Pregnant. It had never been her time.
But as she stood there, her knees clacking together with shock and panic and hope, she watched incredulously as that second pink line formed alongside the other.
And in a moment, that second pink line was almost as strong and powerful as the first.
The next minute was a kind of a blur. Christine placed the lid on the toilet and curled up in a ball on top of it. She held the pregnancy test up in the air, as though at any moment, it might decide to change its mind.
How was this possible?
After all those years?
With only one ovary?
She and Zach hadn’t been careful. But they’d never been careful, and it had never mattered before.
But here and now.
It was proof of something.
Her hand covered her mouth as a gasp escaped. She thought about the enormity of what this meant. She felt her tears rolled down her cheeks a second later and then there was a knock at the door, but Christine couldn’t bring herself to answer it. Finally, the door opened. Zach stood, worry etched between his eyebrows.
“Christine, what happened?” he asked softly. “What — what is that?”
Christine turned the pregnancy test around to show the two lines.
And at that moment, Zach fell to his knees. He looked up at her again and then wrapped Christine in the largest, warmest, incredible hug. He tightened his grip until his cries made her shake, too. Together, they held each other — knowing another Sheridan baby was growing in Christine’s belly. Christine had never imagined life could work in such mysterious ways. But she was so glad she’d been given a chance to see what would happen next.
Everything happened for a reason. She wasn’t about to argue with any of it.
