  “Put a muzzle on it, Manshu. We’re not doing love and kisses out here. Get it through your head that you'll never see Casper again if you fail your training. This distance is about as close as you’ll ever get. Do you understand my meaning?”

  She listened to the psychological torture being disseminated by her instructor and wondered if they would put her out of her misery if she cracked his skull open with a rock.

  “I understand, sir. Please don’t wash me out, sir.”

  He spurred his horse a little and began moving again. Kimberly, also known as T-13, forced her tired legs to keep going. She tamped down her aching need to hold Mike in her arms. Out here, she had to be tougher than the ground under her feet.

  The man on the horse grinned. “I don’t think you’re gonna die today, Trainee Manshu. Probably tomorrow. Now take your damn eyes off of that asshole out there and keep walking.”
