I was going to be staying with Leo and his family for the duration of my stay-- he insisted that his room service was better than that of any hotel, and I wasn’t one to argue. When we pulled into the driveway of his extravagant house, I saw there were a number of cars already parked outside.
“Who else is here?” I wondered if Leo had opened his house to everyone else too. It was certainly big enough.
“Just a few of the omegas you already know. Zen made it as well as Kade and Theo.”
“Yeah? They didn’t tell me they were coming.” I knew who Kade was even though I hadn’t met him. He was Harrison’s omega, and I remembered Harrison from when I interviewed him.
As soon as Leo pulled me through the door, we were immediately surrounded. Zen approached me first, and it was hard to forget the thin young man with short dark hair who Cieran had practically dragged in off the streets. As he said hello and gave me a brief hug his Russian accent still came across, even though it was faint. He’d been linked to the Russian mafia in Las Vegas, and it had been Gabriel, Zen’s matched alpha, who had literally saved him from being killed by his family.
As Zen then said something to Leo, I saw another omega who wasn’t familiar. He had short and perfectly coiffed brown hair. His teeth were almost blindingly white, to the point that he looked like the spokesperson for a toothpaste commercial.
“Hi, I’m Kade. I’m involved in several charity organizations with Harrison. You matched him with a friend of mine, but I think I kind of got to Harrison first,” Kade said before smiling sheepishly.
“Yes, I remember Harrison being so apologetic when he told me. It sounds like everything worked out fine though. I heard you’ve recently had twins,” I said with a quirk of my lips.
Kade nodded, his smile instantly bright once more. I’m sure he was going to say something else, but Theo pushed himself between the two of us.
“Aaron, it’s been way too long!” he exclaimed, drawing me in for a hug. I grinned in return, delighted he’d managed to come despite his busy schedule.
“It has. I hope you’ve been well,” I replied.
“Better than I’d have expected before you intervened with your miracle app,” he said with a smile, and the others hummed their agreement.
“Your app saved my life,” Zen affirmed seriously.
“Your app saved a lot of people. After all, if I can be honest, my alpha would have a hard time finding someone to put up with his attitude without the help of your app,” Kade smiled, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
“Oh, yours is difficult as well? Gabriel is the sweetest man on Earth once you get to know him, but he can be so cold at times. It’s frustrating to say the least,” Zen sighed.
“I think alphas tend to be hard to put up with as a whole, but ours are in a league of their own,” Theo smirked.
“Logan is my dream partner, but I know very few would be willing to get past his cocky act,” I said by way of agreement.
“Well that cements it. ECSD is a miracle app that makes even the most intolerable of alphas sweet as sugar,” Leo avowed. I laughed along with everyone else, feeling a kinship with the other omegas. The group of us spent the day chatting over tea, airing our alpha woes that no one else could even begin to understand. However, the other men were obviously happy, in spite of what frustrations they may have had with their alphas. It made my heart swell to know that my work had helped so many omegas find happiness-- genuine happiness. It was like I was living in a dream. When I’d first started programming, I had high hopes, but not so high expectations. To see the payoff of my hard work was one of the most satisfying feelings in the world.
In the following days, the small group showed me all that the city had to offer-- which was more than I expected. However, most of our time was spent simply talking, taking comfort in the knowledge that we weren’t alone in our experiences. Across the board our circumstances seemed to be unfortunate, but we had come out on top. They tried to give me all the credit, but I couldn’t take responsibility for their tenacity and patience. ECSD had been a catalyst, sure, but it wasn’t any more guaranteed than any other app. It wasn’t magic, as much as we joked about its miracle status over those five days. I appreciated their thanks, but wanted to be sure they were giving themselves the credit they duly deserved. It was something we discussed a number of times over lunch or dinner.
Eventually, they accepted that I wasn’t just some miracle worker with an app that would magically grant happiness. I grew close to the two omegas I hadn’t known well, and we all exchanged contact information to keep in touch. Zen promised to tell me which casinos to avoid if I ever found myself on the Vegas Strip. Kade and I discussed potential fundraising opportunities using the app, which I fully intended to discuss with Logan. Theo had simply hugged me, saying he couldn’t properly express how much I had helped him.
On the plane ride home, I looked forward to brainstorming new ideas for ECSD with Logan-- after we celebrated my return of course. I didn’t need to be woken by a flight attendant when we touched back down in Manhattan. I was quaking with excitement, completely jittery and thrilled by the idea of seeing Logan again. Though I’d had fun, I had missed him more than words could say. I hurried out of the boarding area as quickly as I could, joy flowing through my veins as I lay eyes upon the man who was waiting for me.
Except… Logan wasn’t the only one waiting. At his side, looking chagrined and awkward, stood my father. I hadn’t even seen my father since that night at the gala, but I now realized that Logan hadn’t been happy to let things end on such a bad note. I approached the two of them cautiously, relaxing as soon as Logan pulled me into his arms. It was obvious Dad had no idea what to say, so I started the conversation with the only thing I could think to say.
“You’re going to be a grandpa.”
Tears that he had obviously been trying to restrain flowed freely, and despite myself I hugged him as he repeatedly whispered apologies. It was awkward, but nice. My father had never admitted to being wrong in his life. To receive an apology at all was surprising, but his fervor was all the more baffling. I could only guess it had something to do with the idea of being a grandfather.
“All right, all right. Enough blubbering. Time to get you home. The jet lag must be killing you,” Logan said, clapping his hands. My father stepped back, smiling hesitantly.
“You’ll be ten times the father I ever was. I love you, son. I’m so sorry,” Dad said softly, and I smiled gently to show I appreciated the gesture. True forgiveness would take time, but it was time I was willing to put in. As we parted, Logan carried my luggage to his car, having used one of his own to come pick me up.
“What did you have to say to get through to him?” I asked quietly, getting in the passenger seat and gripping his hand above the center console.
“I told him that we’d be riding off into the sunset together whether we had his blessing or not. Took some time, but he realized I wasn’t backing down,” Logan chuckled. I fell silent, staring out the windshield with a faint smile. I’d never imagined I’d ever find a happy ending of my own, especially not through ECSD, yet here I was. I had no idea what the future would hold, but I was excited to find out.
“Well how about we do that, then?” I suggested with a smile. He raised a brow, and I reddened as I clarified. “Riding off into the sunset, that is.”
“You know, I was thinking just the same.”
