First place I check is Church and to see my Prez standing in front of the board with his eyes locked on papers he’s holding makes me very much aware how this case also doesn’t give him any rest until it’s solved.
My knuckles hit the door. “Prez, can I talk to you?”
“Kray,” Deeds mutters without his gaze leaving the papers. “Shut the door behind you.”
I do as he says and when I stalk closer I can’t think of any other way but to blurt out the reason I’m here. “North texted me he needs a doctor, a plastic surgeon. As in right fucking now.”
Deeds grabs his phone. “What main city is the closest or how do you want to deal with this so their location isn’t compromised?”
I take a deep breath. “He just checked into a hotel. I have the address right here.” I show Deeds the text and he jumps right into action.
“Ten minutes tops,” Deeds tells me when he ends the call. “Let North know he’s expecting a Chinese woman. She’s old, but she’s damn good and can be trusted.”
I shoot North a message and I can see it’s been read but I don’t get a reply. To be honest, I don’t expect one either. Minimum contact. It’s what you need because every single thing you do can compromise their location. And for North to reach out? Fuck. This is bad.
“Calm down, brother. You know he’ll always do what’s needed, right?” Deeds grabs the bottle of scotch, fills his glass and reaches for another one to hand me two fingers worth of scotch.
It’s too fucking early for a drink but the burn going down my throat is a warm welcome.
“Are there any new developments?” I sigh and place my glass on the table.
Deeds shakes his head. “Same as last night. Haven’t heard back from the prospect we put on Blancher’s house. I’m curious as fuck what this asshole’s hiding.”
“Anyone else turn up dead? If not, those three who worked underneath Shade either surrendered or were working against Shade from the start, right?” I muse, starting up where we left the discussion last night.
“Nash checked their online space through some back door or however he put it. It seems they are still in business as if nothing happened so it’s safe to say it was a hostile takeover. And it fucking sucks to have no communication while we had a guy on the inside. He must know more and some crucial shit too if he went into hiding.”
I nod at Deeds’ words and think it over. “Might not just have been to keep Reva safe either.”
“Fuck. Did the message say who the doctor was for?” Deeds snaps.
My chest tightens with fear. “No. You know how it is, less details the better.”
“Fucking hell, remind me why we’re not bringing him in. Dammit,” Deeds roars.
“Am I supposed to be the one to tell you to calm down, brother? And tell you how he’ll always do what’s needed. And fuck...so do we, Prez,” I croak with my heart in my throat.
Minutes pass as the both of us remain silent. Yet inside our heads it’s screaming with the turmoil of this whole situation. The most frustrating is the standstill where our hands are tied. The only thing we can do is keep going over everything we have, hoping for a new lead or for something new to happen to drag us forward.
I decide to change the topic into something normal and positive for a change. I have no clue if he already knows, but I’m telling him anyway. “My Old Lady got inked last night.”
His head swings my way, a proud grin tugging his mouth. “Yeah?”
I return the proud grin. “Woke up this morning with her draped over me and my name in the patch inked on her upper arm.”
“Congratulations are in order then. As I said, good fucking catch, brother. Now all we need is for North to return and hope those two hook up. Did you hear Chopper and Nash raving about the other twin? She’s some kind of whiz kid, minus the kid...you know what I mean.”
Suddenly I remember something. “Fuck. I need to head home later today. I totally forgot Reva has a pet and he’s been without food for a couple of days now.”
“Dude.” Deeds rears his head back. “We don’t need any more deaths involved in this case, people or pets...for fuck’s sake.”
“Kazz isn’t dead.” The corner of my mouth twitches. “North took her pet with him to his house and gave him a new habitat and made sure to fatten him up before he left. And if it wasn’t clear...Kazz is a bearded dragon, a reptile and those fuckers can skip food every now and then. But I’m heading home later today to feed him cause like you said...we don’t need anything else dying on us.”
“Weird choice of pet,” Deeds mutters and pours himself another drink, holding the bottle up toward my glass but I give a shake of my head.
“As I said, I’m heading home later today, no more booze. Besides, it’s early morning. Coffee time, Prez.”
Deeds snorts. “I’ll have some coffee later when I’ve slept for two or three hours. But you’re right. I should probably stop drinking.” He swallows back the scotch and slams the glass back on the table. “Okay, I’m gonna turn in. If I’m lucky my Old Lady is still in bed sleeping off her hangover. It was Roan’s time to watch the kids, right? Yeah. I can make my woman’s screams fill the house without tiny people questioning if I’m trying to kill their mother.”
“Yeah, too much information, man,” I chuckle and stand at the same time as Deeds.
We both head for the door when my phone dings with a message. I take it out and have to read the message three times before I swallow hard, punch the number and bring my phone to my ear.
“Leaving now, sit tight,” I tell North and hang up.
Minimum contact, minimum time on the fucking phone. And now? Minimum fucking time to save Reva.
Chapter Fourteen
***Vienna***
Shouting rouses me from my sleep. Why the hell did I drink so much last night? I never have a hangover but the amount of tequila must have made a bigger impact than I thought. My head throbs and yet again shouting draws my attention. People are rushing through the hallway and suddenly panic flows through my body. Is there a new development in the case?
I dash off the bed and grab clothes to dress as fast as I can. I don’t bother with combing my hair; running my fingers through it is good enough. I head into the hallway and have to step back to let Depay rush past me. I fall in step behind him and the both of us rush into the main room of the clubhouse.
Bikes are roaring outside and I’m about to follow Depay out the door when I’m being pulled back by my arm. Glancing back, I see it’s Lips. Xena and Diamond, Depay’s Old Lady, are standing behind her.
“You have to stay here with us,” Lips tells me while the door falls shut.
My chest is heaving while the roaring of the bikes fades off into the distance.
“What’s going on?” I question.
Lips swallows hard. “I don’t think I can pull off the whole ‘club business’ statement.” She glances left and right and both Xena and Diamond shake their head.
“You know damn well neither one of us would function well if we’d been fed that line of bullshit,” Xena sighs.
Diamond steps forward and comes to stand next to me. Facing Lips she says, “Tell her the truth.”
“Fuck.” Lips snatches my wrist and pulls me to the booth in the corner.
“I’ll grab us some coffee,” Xena says and heads for the kitchen.
Diamond slides in next to me and she gives me the impression she’s blocking my exit strategy.
Lips is sitting across from me and laces her fingers together. “Okay, I’m going to tell you what I know but you have to sit tight. Do not freak out on me because I will tackle your ass and Diamond here will hold you down while I tie your ass up, understood?”
I should be freaking the hell out but instead there’s an eerie calmness overtaking me. “Let me have it.”
“Kray received a text this morning from North. He requested a doctor. He rushed to Deeds who made it happen. Sometime later Kray received another message. It’s not good, V
ienna. North requested to be picked up but specifically mentioned you should not be present.”
Air rushes into my lungs and I let it settle before slowly releasing it to replace it with a new flow which is inhaled through my nose and out through my mouth. For a brief moment I close my eyes and remind myself to focus and stay strong. I can’t lose it. Not until I know all the details or see shit with my own eyes.
“Is she still alive?” I ask. My voice is steady but filled with enough emotion to make Lips flinch.
“I don’t know,” Lips whispers. “All I know is what I’ve told you. They’re heading out to bring them both back but not here, though.”
“What do you mean with not here?” I growl, losing my temper.
Xena places four mugs of coffee on the table.
“It means,” Lips says but doesn’t expand but takes the mug of coffee and stares into it.
“Well?” I snap, barely hanging on.
“Oh, for Pete’s sake,” Xena mutters to herself before hardening her tone. “It means you have to sit tight, drink your coffee and wait for them to return. And before you flip out on me,” Xena points a finger in my face, “because I can tell by the crazy look in your eye you’re about to. Remember this. If she was dead, North would be here himself, telling you face-to-face. If she was close to dying? He wouldn’t be requesting a doctor; he’d have her in the hospital requesting backup to guard her there. Do I know what’s going on? Hell, no. Do I have a working brain and know these guys? Hell, yes. All we can do is wait.”
“And drink coffee,” I croak in understanding.
She reaches out and covers her hand with mine. “Right, and drink coffee.”
Minutes tick by while we’re sipping our coffee. No words are being said, there’s only tension and coffee. My mind keeps trailing off to all kind of options but I keep reminding myself of what Xena said.
I have to say, with the first few sips of coffee I was pretty damn pissed at Kray for not waking me or telling me about the text. But then again rational thoughts entered me. These guys have been working flawlessly together for years. I have to put my faith in them though it does stings to not be able to help.
“You are helping, you know,” Lips mutters, her eyes pinned on mine as if she can read minds. “I can tell your head is in overdrive.” She shrugs. “You don’t have to tell any of us how you feel because every single one of us have been in your position one time or another. Maybe not the exact same position but the whole ‘hands tied and let them handle it’ thing. It’s hard as fuck, but with us sticking together, right here? It allows them to focus on the task at hand. See? Helping. Besides, we can totally kick their ass when they get back or withhold sex because we’re angry for being left out and shit.”
Diamond snorts. “As if you can withhold sex for more than five minutes.”
Lips glares at Diamond for a moment before she sags back into the booth. “Fuck. You’re right.”
I can’t help but release a tiny laugh but sober up way too soon. Time drags on until finally there’s a rumble of bikes in the distance. All of us dash up and head outside. One by one they ride up to the compound. My eyes are searching but I don’t see North or my sister anywhere.
Finally, I notice Kray and run toward him as his boot hits the kickstand. He doesn’t notice me. He’s just sitting on his bike as he leans his forearms on the gas tank, gazing into the distance.
“Kray,” I croak. “Kray, what’s going on?”
His head slowly turns toward me and the haunted look in his eyes is slamming into my chest.
“North might have saved your sister, Vienna...but I’m not so sure he did,” Kray croaks.
His eyes are filling up. Why are his eyes filling up? I don’t understand a word of what he just said.
Kray swings his leg over the bike and wraps me in his embrace. My mind is still processing as I start to push him away but he holds on tight. As if he needs me more than I need him. What the hell is going on?
