Marked By Lies: A Reverse Harem Series (The Marked Series Book 1) Page 21

by Paige Orr

All four of them have popped in to check up on me from time to time, and I know that none of them have believed me when I’ve told them that I’m fine. They have enough on their plates though, helping their people recover from the shit that they’ve been through, and they don’t need to be worrying about me on top of that. Things returned to normal after that day, but I just feel like I’m stuck in some fucked up limbo.

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget the petrified look on those kid's faces that day. In fact, I dream about them any time I do manage to get any sleep. Usually in those nightmares though, I don’t make it in time and their lifeless corpses look at me with blame filling them. I don’t think any sane person could get over seeing a child in that situation.

Annika has tried to get me to speak to her about everything that’s going on in my head, but that's my burden alone to carry. Usually I would confide in her about absolutely everything, but every time I even think about telling her what’s going on in my head, bile rises up my throat.

Over the last two weeks, Grey and Priscila have been her almost everyday, her while she tries to teach about what I am. When she came to me in those tunnels, I never had the time to think about why she knew so much about my magic, but it turns out that she was the same as me. It makes so much sense when I think about it now, but I’m just glad I finally have someone that can explain things to me.

Through all of my training, I’ve learned how to keep my sight on full-time, so that I don’t need to switch between. It took a little while to get used to it all, but now that I am, It’s truly sunk in that I’m not human. Priscilla explained to me that we are a rare group of supernaturals named necromancers. When she told me that though, I couldn’t help but think back to that day in the garden with my mom when Lucy told me she wasn’t my real mother.

I’ve not seen her ghost since that time in Adelaide’s, and I don’t know if I feel hurt or relieved with that. I have so many important things to ask her, but at the same time I don’t know if I’m ready for the answers. Not only that, but seeing her would bring back the guilt of being unable to save her, and I’m dealing with far too much guilt as it is.

I can only hope that the work I’m putting into my magic will help to make sure that I don’t make the same mistakes again. I’ll never ignore what my gut is trying to tell me again. If I did so with Marcus, then maybe the whole incident could have been avoided. The one thing I don’t regret about it all though, is meeting the guys.

Even after everything that happened that should have made them want to avoid me, there’s still a strong pull between us all. I’ve tried to make sense of it all when I’m alone, but after going round in circles in my head, I decided to just let things be.

I’m snapped out of my thoughts by the sound of ringing, and I look down at the desk, finding an unknown number flashing on the screen of my phone. Not knowing if it could be a client, I know that I can’t ignore it. As nice as my pay was for the last job, I need to keep gaining exposure to make the business a success. I pick up the phone, answering the call and bringing it to my ear.

“Hello, Crimson Investigations. Melissa speaking, how can I help you today?”

“Hello Miss Greene, this is Alpha Stevenson. I’m afraid the pack has a little issue that we were told you could help us with.”

I’m stunned for a moment, shocked that the local Alpha would contact me of all people. The only reason I can think of is word about what I did to help the Fae has gotten around. I don’t know whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing though I’m going with good since he wants me to work for him.

“Well, Alpha Stevenson, you've called the right place. Why don’t you come by my office as we can talk about what I can do for you?”

“That would be great. I can be there in an hour, the situation is quite urgent.”

When isn’t it urgent buddy, every person who needs my help always says the same thing. As much as I would like to tell him that, the strain in his voice has me biting my tongue.

“That’s perfect Alpha, I’ll clear my diary for you.”

“Thank you Melissa, it means a lot.”

With that, he hangs up the call, and I release a long breath. My diary is fucking empty, but it’s always smart to make a client feel special. It seems there is no rest for the wicked though, and I better get my ass in gear. Let’s just hope this case isn’t as bad as the last one. Not that I should really curse it, I’ve learned that nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
