She arched an eyebrow. “Is there a reason you’re not sitting at the kitchen table?”
He stood, his face level with his beautiful bride, and enjoyed the flash of annoyance in her emerald eyes. “Because I know what you’re thinking, and the answer is no.”
She pursed her lips, briefly distracting him as he recalled loving that mouth—and much more—during the night. “I’m only five months along and finally feeling better. It’s not a long ride to Silas Ravine. I’d be with Papa. You know I’m curious as to the state of the mining now that the valleys have opened up after the winter thaw.”
Cal place a hand on her abdomen and the child within. My son. Jennie and the babe had fast become the center of his world.
“Will you at least wait a few days?” he asked. “Then I can take you.”
He’d traded manhunting for carpentry, and was currently working on a renovation of the San Juan Restaurant and Bakery.
Letting out a frustrated moan, Jennie leaned forward and kissed him, lingering against his lips. “Fine. I’ll wait for you.” She swatted his hand as he tried to unbutton her blouse.
He chuckled.
“I should’ve listened to Simon,” she added. “Cha bhi sinn ’g a innseadh do na feannagan.”
We won’t tell the crows.
“You’re Gaelic is improving, but Crow always knows.”
“You didn’t know about me.” Her expression became serious. “I’m glad you stayed.”
He brought a hand to her cheek and stroked her chin with his thumb. “I love you, Jennie.”
The home of his heart smiled. “And I love you, Crow.”
