“Me too,” he returned, his gaze roaming back up my body. "And you're just my type."

Instant heat flushed through me. He was teasing me, and I didn't like the quirk on his mouth. The way he was looking at me made me feel naked in my jean cutoffs and clinging t-shirt. As I felt my nipples betray me by hardening beneath his stare, I took a breath and forced myself to walk away.

"Sounds like your problem," I said indifferently.

There was no way I was getting involved with an obvious bad ass when I’d just gotten rid of one.

Well, one who’d thought he was, anyway.

Blurb - A road side bombing left Ace disfigured and dead inside. He faces the world with silent bitterness and a damaged ego. Then a quiet beauty comes into his life cracking the shell around his heart, and healing the wounds of his soul.

Excerpt - I watched the door close behind Ace but remained where I was, silent tears rolling down my face. I wasn't sure how much longer I could continue doing what I was doing with him. Each time it got harder, and it was tearing me up inside. Especially when he handed me the money afterwards, paying me for my services, as if I was a prostitute. I'd never once asked him for money, and I had to wonder if he gave it to me because it was easier for him to think of me in that way.

The truth was I was in love with him, and had been for a long time. For years I'd watched him grab a different woman almost every night, and take her out back to fuck or get a blowjob. And then one night he'd looked at me, really looked at me as if seeing me for the first time, and not the plain, curvy woman who worked behind the bar. As I'd been getting ready to leave at the end of my shift he'd grabbed my hand and pulled me out back, and I'd let him with my heart in my throat and barely able to breathe.

He'd asked me simply, in sexy, growly voice that he had, "Are you good with this?"

I hadn't been a hundred percent sure what he'd meant, but when he'd pushed me to my knees in front of him I'd figured it out real quick. I wasn't a virgin, I'd been with a couple of men, but most of my knowledge and experience had come from the dirty romance novels I liked reading. So with that in mind, I'd given Ace the best blowjob of my life, eagerly and willingly, and I'd loved every minute of it.

Turned out he'd loved it, too, because soon after that he'd stopped dragging those other women out back. When he was in the mood it was me that he came to. I'd been thrilled at first, not confusing his sudden interest with love, but holding out hope that it would lead to that one day. But as the days passed, and then the months, I soon realized that Ace didn't have it in him to love someone. Especially a woman he thought so little of that she was only good for sucking his dick, and not for kissing, or soft words, or dating.

I knew it was just a matter of time before I'd have to call a halt to what we were doing. It was going to kill me giving him up, but I had to move on with my life. As long as I made myself available to Ace being with anyone else was out of the question. I wouldn't do that, anyway. I wiped my cheeks, took a deep breath and went inside.

The first one my gaze fell on was Bonnie. She took one look at me, knew my heartache, and gave me a sympathetic smile.
