“How can that be possible, you’re immortal, a vampire? They don’t decay.”
“Every time I do magick, it takes something from me even though I have vampirism in my blood, I’m a hybrid.”
“Then you should’ve thought about that when you made Trevor change you, and you made Lucian keep your secret.” My voice shook just a little, betraying my true feelings. Even though I’m pissed at the entire situation, I was happy to have my grandmother back, no matter what she had become.
“Where did Lucian go?”
“Look for varmints.” The thought of watching her drink the blood of a rat disgusted me.
I looked around and found a shard of slate, and slit my palm, “Drink.” She slurped the blood dripping from my hand. Her cheeks turned Rosie. She lifted her head taking my hand into her mouth. I yanked it away, “That’s enough Eve!” I scowled.
I watched her wounds heal before she wiped the last drop away from her mouth, “Thank you, my sweet child. But why didn’t you let me die?” She brightened.
“Let’s just say, I don’t like Fates destiny and I’m writing my own and you’re a significant role player in my destiny.” I extended my hand. Suddenly Samuel slammed into the limestone wall; he hit the ground blood covered.
“What the fuck!”
“The Black Cloak’s must have been in the shadows waiting for the right moment. You should have left Rainelle. Now we are both trapped.” I glared at her then rushed to Samuel’s feeling for a pulse.
Eve loomed over us protecting us from the falling debris, “Is he alright?” She asked, her voice quiet and tense. I gazed up to meet her eyes shaking my head. Tears swelled waiting to break free. All the color drained from her face. Her eyes blackened like coal; her fangs glistened against the fire glow. My attention turned back to Samuel. Lucian sat beside Eve. The blood pooled around Samuel’s head. His pulse grew weaker by the minute.
“Samuel, you can’t leave me, not like this. I won’t allow you to die.” I shouted, he remained still.
“Rainelle, we must leave. We can come back for his body, but it’s too late for him. I’m sorry.” Eve said her voice husky with tears.
“I. WILL. NOT. LEAVE. HIM.!” Lucian held me from behind. I didn’t even notice him change.
Lucian forced me around, “Then if you want him to live, let Eve change him, but it must be done now.” He grumbled.
“You want me to let my vampire hybrid, witch and only the Gods know what else, change the man I love?” my voice strained at the thought, “He would never forgive me, nor would he forgive Eve. I cannot do this, not without his permission, but I don’t and can’t lose the man I’m destined to be with either.”
“Rainelle I’m afraid it is the only way if you want to save him. I’m sorry, but no healing incantation will save him.” Lucian held my trembling body tighter.
“I have to try, I must try.” Eve kneeled and took my hands.
“Blessed goddess hear my plea. Your humble servant needs your sight, Bless us with your healing light.
Guide us by channeling your gift. As we use your light to heal.
Blessed Goddess hear my thanks. Your servant humbled with thy might. Healed by your blessed light.
I pledge my gift for all days. Your wisdom and guidance to lead my ways. Blessed be.”
The spell failed. Suddenly Lucian and Eve’s mouth parted as she sniffed the air. Lucian tensed and stood over me.
“The brothers of the society are near with company, and I don’t know who they are, but power radiates off them. Klyde is leading them to us. I’d know that stench anywhere.” Lucian confirmed.
“Rainelle dear, it is now or never. You know the outcome if we stay. Make your choice and make it quick without regret.” She spoke in her most demure voice.
“I cannot leave him. Please don’t make me choose. I can’t do it.” I sobbed holding his head close to my heart. I hoped if he felt my heartbeat, he would wake.
“Then I will choose for you.” She huffed; her lips sewn into a grimace.
I didn’t want to lose Samuel the way I did, or my grandmother for a second time. By the narrowest of margins, we escaped the Black Cloak society, Klyde and unknown beasts. We traveled undetected. Eve took us below Mt. Le Conte. While we followed Eve, I stayed close to Lucian, not taking my eyes off him or Samuel.
