“I’m sorry. I truly thought it was Ben in there.” Alex looked slightly chagrined.

“You thought it was, or you wanted it to be?” Throwing his own words back at him didn’t make me feel any better.

I hadn’t really thought it would.

  “Fair enough.”

“Can you two be done fighting each other?” Quinn broke in. “You guys need to work together. Whether it’s complicated or not there is a friendship at the base of your relationship that you need to use to pull through this.” Always the peacemaker.

“Yeah. Sorry, Q. I’m sure my fear for Ben has made me more than a little grouchy. I’m sorry, Al.”

  “I’m sorry, too.”

  “Good, now shake hands.”

I shook Al’s hand automatically. My mind was preoccupied. Things like the realization that perhaps there was more to Ben and I than just a sire bond. Now wasn’t the time for that, however. Now was the time for finding him.

I do not smell him. I don’t believe he was here. If I can be of help, call. I will be trying to find a way to connect to my mate.

  Thank you.

“So, shall we take a look at the financials again?” It was the only thing I could think of.

The AWFA Killer had gone to a lot of trouble to set up a trap in their main offshore account, but for who? We knew it was obviously a high ranking AWFA member, yet we couldn’t find anyone that fit the bill.

My phone rang with a text. “Preliminary tissue tests show the victim is human. Will proceed to measure and run a check against missing persons.”

My body sagged with relief; even though my cat had assured me, it was good getting confirmation.

  “What?” Alex asked.

“The body was just confirmed human.”

“Good, I’m happy for you.” He didn’t look happy.

“Thanks. I’m glad he’s not dead, but I feel badly for the human.”

“Me, too. I wonder who he is?” I watched as his dislike of Ben faded to the background, replaced by professional curiosity.

“They’re going to run him against missing persons. Hopefully we’ll find out.” Nobody liked doing notifications, but the knowing of whether someone was dead or alive could allow the family to begin the healing process.

Quinn coughed. “Okay, I’m taking Alex and heading over to ERT. Grace asked for help going through evidence again.”

“Thank you, guys. I’m going to head over to where Gerry is and see if I can’t help him out some. See you later.” I’d just turned to go when my phone rang again. Not surprising since I was lead on the case. “Go for Reece.”

“Sam, we think he’s here at UAB hospital.” Gerry’s voice broke with the news. “They’ve got a John Doe that’s pretty beat up, but the doctor thinks he’ll pull through. There’s a note with your name on it.”

“I’ll be right there” I turned back and told Quinn and Alex what happened.

“You should go and see him. He’s going to need a friend.” Al could be really thoughtful.

I was sorry I went full cat on him before and just yelled at him.

“I’m heading over there right now.” I gave him a quick peck and took off after waving to Quinn. Jix was aching to make sure Ben and her mate were okay.

I made my way down to the parking garage, and when I got to the level I parked on, I hit the autostart button on my key fob. It was warm and I was hoping the A/C would be a little cooler than boiling soup by the time I slid behind the wheel.

The drive was only ten minutes or so, but it was one I was really nervous about. I slid behind the wheel of my baby and left for the hospital. A text from Gerry rang through.

  It’s not him.

I had a green arrow to turn left. I set the phone down still planning to head to the hospital. I was in the midst of turning when I saw the van careening toward me.

The driver hit my side of the car as I was turning. He must’ve been flying because my car went backwards about four feet before turning over and skidding to a stop. My baby was crunched. I held tight to her wheel and did my best to keep control.

I stopped, stuck tight in the car because my driver’s door wouldn’t open. I rolled my window down, grateful that the battery still worked. I turned off the car, hoping to prevent any further issues.

Someone approached my baby and I looked up from my upside down position.

“Oh, thank goodness. I’m an FBI agent and I can’t reach my phone. Will you please call 911 for help? Tell them Agent—” I was cut off when the butt of a gun smashed against my face.

Darkness took over and I passed out.
