“Here she is.” Rachel opened the door.
EmVee ran in. Her mom—lightly tanned skin, freckles, and wild red hair like hers—was bandaged. She had a cast on one arm. She was the most beautiful woman EmVee had ever seen.
“Mom!” EmVee hugged her. Tears flowed as she sobbed. “I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, my Vida Emily.” Her mom tightened her good arm around EmVee.
Kayson cleared his throat. “Ms. Lewis, hello. I’m Kayson.”
EmVee sat on the bed next to her mom and held out her hand to Kayson. “He’s my husband.”
Her mom frowned. “Your what?”
“I’m Kayson…Kayson Whalen, ma’am.” He held out a hand to shake hers. When her mom took it, he bent over and hugged her. “Yes, well, we didn’t formally get married yet, but we bonded. Uh, it’s hard to explain. I’d like to marry her legally as soon as possible.”
“You’re detective Kevin Whalen’s son?” She studied him. “Is he all right?”
“No, he was murdered, pursuing the Overlord.”
“Well, I’m happy you found each other. We’ve worked with Kevin for years. We didn’t know it was him sending us information until our son got in trouble with the law, and my husband met him in person. The Vigilant have been trying to get close to the Overlord for as long as I can remember. They saved me and Max when we were around your age. That’s why we wanted to help the cause.”
EmVee held her mother’s hand. “You risked so much.”
Her mother nodded. “I know, but it will be worth it to protect the other Provinces. To protect her.”
“What do you mean?”
“The Overlord is trying to destroy the barrier between him and Earth. He wants to kill the queen to get his magic from her. It will give him the power to negotiate or overtake the entity that roams there. Now, earth has its own version of evil, but if the Overlord conspires with that force and removes or destroys his wife, darkness will fall on the Earth Province like never before. He’s getting too close to his objective. Too close.”
“Well, then, we will stop him.” EmVee hugged her.
Her mother smiled, caressed her cheek. “I know we can. The Vigilant is stronger too. We’ve infiltrated many of the ranks within the elite Soul Stealers. No longer will they be able to control the magicals with their dark magic. And we have a way of finding your siblings and using their locations to get us closer.”
“Then let’s do it.” EmVee lay on the bed with her mother, careful not to squeeze her injured arm. She was overjoyed to see the strength in her mother’s eyes.
“And one more thing…” her mother said, “Tell me about your wolf.” And she winked.

LM. Preston is an avid reader. She loved to create poetry and short stories as a young girl. With a thirst for knowledge she attended college and worked in the IT field as a Techie and Educator for over sixteen years. She started writing science fiction under the encouragement of her husband who was a Sci-Fi buff and her four kids. Her first published novel, Explorer X - Alpha was the beginning of her obsessive desire to write and create stories of young people who overcome unbelievable odds. She loves to write while on the porch, watching her kids play, or when she is traveling, which is another passion that encouraged her writing.
