“Probably not to the outside world, but you’re clearly at home together when you’re at home together. Did that make sense?” Her nana looked at her empty sherry glass.

  “I think so,” Katie chuckled.

She gave Katie a sly wink and speared a pea.

Who knew peeing on the floor would lead to revelations all round?

  ***

Later that night, sitting outside with a blanket wrapped around them, Katie turned to the woman who’d stolen her heart.

Gillian stroked her cheek. “How does it feel to be out to your nana?”

“Surreal, but good. I think that was the most bizarre conversation I’ve ever had.”

Scuttling sideways on the porch steps, Gillian snuggled closer. “Have you ever wondered if she’s a closeted lesbian?”

“Not really,” Katie said. “Why? Do you think she is?”

Gillian rubbed Katie’s arm. “I don’t know, and I don’t really care either. The main thing is you no longer have to hide who you are from your family.”

Or her workmates. Katie thought back to the day she’d come out.

Janet had been supportive from the get-go, stating she had wondered when Katie would get around to telling her.

Hillary had taken a little longer to come around, going as far as to admit she didn’t know how she would feel if one of her daughters announced they were gay. Something Katie understood and felt sad about at the same time.

Ron, of course, had been over the moon.

A dog barked in the distance. Katie tipped her head back, staring into the night. A star shot across the sky. “Did you see that?”

“What?” Gillian looked around the darkness surrounding them.

“A shooting star.” Katie pulled the blanket tighter, wrapping them in a tight cocoon, basking in Gillian’s body heat. “Let’s make a wish.”

  “Okay.” Gillian closed her eyes.

Taking her lead, Katie did the same. My wish is to live a long, happy life with Gillian.

When Katie opened her eyes, she was met by Gillian’s warm smile. The moon cast a sliver of light across her left cheek.

“What did you wish for?” Gillian asked.

Pondering the question, Katie pursed her lips. “Doesn’t that mean it won’t come true…if I tell you?”

“Depends what you believe. Do you believe your wish will come true? Or was it something ridiculous, like wanting to win a million bucks.”

Sitting next to Gillian meant more to Katie than all the money in the world. “I have something worth more than what money can buy.”

“Oh, really. Do tell.” Gillian waggled her eyebrows.

“You.” Katie chuckled. “What did you wish for?”

“To one day call you my wife.”

As much as the thought warmed Katie’s heart, it was a pipedream. “Gay marriage isn’t even legal.”

“I know.” Gillian lifted a shoulder. “But when I dream, I dream big.” Her eyes lit up. “We’ll buy a three-bedroom house with a wraparound porch, adopt three cats, two dogs, and a canary. One like Tweety Bird.”

Laughing, Katie nudged Gillian’s shoulder. “How about we find a flat first, then we can talk about what kind of house we want to buy and how many pets we’re going to have?”

Suddenly serious, Gillian stared into Katie’s eyes. Her gaze was so intense, it felt like she could see into Katie’s soul.

What would she see? A heart full of hope and love.

“Right now, my only wish is to spend every minute I can with you. I can’t wait until we move in together. I love you, Katie Parker.”

Overcome with emotion, Katie spoke around the lump in her throat. “I love you, too, Gillian Baines.”

Their lips met, and Katie poured everything she had into that kiss; her heart and soul, her dreams of a happy future, but most of all, she poured in the love she felt for this beautiful woman who’d stolen her heart.

“I hope we grow old together,” Katie whispered as she nuzzled Gillian’s ear, breathing in her honey shampoo.

“We will,” Gillian whispered back, resting her head on Katie’s shoulder.

Finally at peace with who she was as a person—Katie Parker, a lesbian with the most awesome girlfriend in the world—Katie held tight to those two little words.

  We will.
