He was taller than her and she noticed he was stooping.

‘This isn’t leading to anything but it’s a big kiss for big information,’ she said, realising she was running her hands up and down his back before he manoeuvred her up against the wall. ‘I’m not putting out.’

‘I know,’ he said quietly, kissing her again and this time she was lost in his mouth then felt one of his hands on her hips.

They were both groaning and she knew he was slowly moving towards her breasts. In two minds whether to slap him away, she let him carry on. When he touched her nipple, she felt explosions of lust on her skin, knowing her knickers were getting wet. Taking the initiative, she pushed her hands under his t-shirt and felt his smooth skin before he did the same thing.

Hatty didn’t want to pull away and his hands squeezed, stroked and caressed her breast as his stiff lump ground against her groin. Their mouths were so heavily locked and he was touching her all over. She realised they’d have to stop. Pushing him gently away, she noticed her breasts were exposed as was most of his torso after she’d pushed up his t-shirt.

‘I think that was fair payment,’ she said, covering up and smiling at his broad grin.

  ‘For now.’

‘Aunt Ethel,’ Jake said, walking alongside the lady the same early evening, carrying her bags as she left the estate. His head was spinning after the cave episode and he was full of admiration and lust for Hatty knowing that when they did eventually get down to having sex, it would be amazing. ‘Are you well today?’

‘Master Jake me tink ya want sumtin,’ smiled the old lady. ‘Ya look very rosy.’

‘She knows about her father,’ he replied, ignoring her comment.

  ‘Ya talkin’ about Hatty?’

‘Yes,’ he said. ‘And she called him a waster.’ The woman laughed and shook her head. ‘But how comes she goes to London every year? And why wasn’t her mother buried on the island?’

‘Eloise born in London not ‘ere. She only know dis place ‘cos ‘er blood grandparents live ‘ere. When she die, she bury where she born.’

‘And Hatty goes back every year?’

‘Dat gal made Mister Murray an’ Delores agree it.’

‘What does she do in London? Who does she see?’

  ‘Ya ask ‘er?’

‘Do you think she’d tell me?’ he sighed.

‘Ask ‘er. Ya laugh when ya ‘ear what she does. It not what ya tink.’ Ethel turned serious for a moment. ‘Ya tellin’ ‘er tings?’

‘I told her about her mum’s heart condition and she was very happy to hear about it,’ he said, his loins stirring with desire.

‘Jacob,’ Ethel said, stopping to look up at him. ‘Ya know da more ya find out, da more ya might not like it.’

‘Delores said the same thing to me weeks ago when I was asking.’

‘Delores,’ Ethel let out a little sigh. ‘Now dat anoder ting all togeder.’

‘I know her and dad have got something going on,’ he said, making the old lady nearly stumble. ‘Are you okay?’

‘It sad really,’ said Ethel with a pained expression. ‘Unrequited love.’

  ‘What Hatty?’

‘No, Delores. Me say enough. Ya go and search but be careful ya find out sumtin ya not want to ‘ear. Remember me know Hatty since da dey she born in dat old house.’

‘You were there as well as dad!’

‘Me saw dat little madam shoot out ‘er moder den kick an’ scream when me try to wrap her up an’ hand over. Mister Murray so concern with Eloise dey not see what Hatty do. She laugh. Hatty say ‘ha, ha’!’

The water felt warm as Hatty bathed off the saw dust and dirt from her body, making sure her finger nails were clean. The idea of seeing Jake again excited her and, after their kiss in the cave and then the canoodling, she couldn’t sleep. Her body wanted the man. Her brain was telling her to be careful.

She stood up in the shallow pool, wrapping her arms around her breasts and looked to the side, mesmerised by the falling water and the sun reflecting off the surface. Hatty saw her reflection and, for once, thought she looked quite nice. The streams of sunlight caressed her body with their warmth and she stood perfectly still. It wasn’t until she felt hands on the top of her arms, Hatty jumped and turned to see Jake looking down at her.

‘You were miles away,’ he said, his arms stroking her skin.

‘This is a swimming lesson,’ she replied, her arms wrapped firmly across her chest.

‘I know,’ he sighed, sinking into the water and looking up at her. ‘Swimming first, information second and kissing third then maybe sightseeing.’

‘Something like that,’ she smiled at his handsome face.

‘You looked so peaceful and happy standing here. I arrived a few minutes ago and was looking at you,’ he said and Hatty realised he was being sincere.

She released her arms and touched his face gently as he slowly went on his knees, his face just beneath hers and she kissed him very gently on the lips.

‘Ya sweet talk workin’ today,’ she said, pushing him hard back into the water and watching the splash rise. ‘Now let’s swim.’

‘Congratulations!’ laughed Jake nearly an hour later. ‘You’ve accomplished doggy paddle.’

‘I could throw Barney into the pool and see if he can do a better job,’ she smiled, her body submersed in the water. ‘But I do need to learn breast stroke.’

‘As you asked,’ Jake said and moved closer. ‘This is my version of breast stroke.’ Hatty pulled back and glared at him, knowing he was getting fresher each time he came close. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘We’re not going to have sex,’ she said gently, wanting the exact opposite. ‘You have a girlfriend in New York, a slut on the island and no doubt other things I don’t want to know about.’

‘Are you jealous?’ he said, smiling and moving away.

‘I’m a very modern woman and that’s all you need to know.’

  ‘Come out with me tonight.’

  ‘Can’t.’

  ‘Why not?’

‘Because I have things to do,’ she said, looking at the greenery and knowing she should be preparing for the market on Sunday.

‘Give it a miss and come out with me. If you’re scared to be alone you needn’t be. Bring Louisa.’

‘I’m not scared to be alone with you,’ she laughed out. He swiftly moved closer, wrapping his arms around her body as her bare breasts pressed up against his skin. Hatty held her breath for a moment as they looked into each other’s eyes not saying a word. ‘See.’

  ‘You’re shaking.’

  ‘No I’m not.’

‘You are,’ he said and leaned closer, kissing her gently on the lips.

She felt his tongue meet hers and Hatty wrapped her arms and legs around him, his hands now holding one butt cheek each.

She then realised they were sinking.

‘What are you doing?’ she said, drawing away as he started to pull her down. ‘I can’t swim under water!’

‘If you keep kissing me, you’ll be fine.’

‘No Jake, please don’t,’ she said. ‘I don’t want to go under.’

‘But you go under every day.’

‘Because only I’m pulling me down, no one else is.’ A memory came into her head and she felt anxious as she held on to him. ‘I really don’t want to.’

‘Okay,’ he said gently. She felt him walk out of the water with her firmly wrapped around his body. Jake grinned. ‘I like my new attachment.’

‘Thanks,’ she said, as he released her and she stood dripping wet.

‘What went through your mind, just as we were in the water?’

‘Me not being able to get any air and a pain in my back, like a jolt.’

‘Lie next to me in the sun and we can dry off. I’ll help you put your layers of mosquito repellent on.’

  ‘You do that for me?’

‘If I can get close without suffocating from the stuff then I
’m happy.’

‘I’ve got waterproof repellent on,’ she said, matter of fact, as he laughed, pulling her down to the ground.

They lay side by side, Jake propped on his elbow looking down at her as she lay on her back. He had the end of her plait in his hand and she felt him stroke under her breasts with the end.

‘I’ll pick you up at six,’ he said and she felt his breath on her neck and knew it was sending tingles all over her skin.

Hatty daren’t look at her nipples which she knew were standing to attention. She closed her eyes as he took the end of her plait and glided it up towards her breasts, circling each nipple. She tried not to gulp at what he was doing but was aware of the involuntary action of her body. Then she gasped as his mouth covered her nipple and she opened her eyes to see his head over her breasts. His hand squeezed the other one. For a moment she was caught up in it then pushed him away, examining his innocent expression.

‘That’s not in the agreement,’ she scowled.

‘I said kissing so effectively I can kiss you anywhere.’

  ‘You said kiss.’

  ‘I kissed your breasts.’

  ‘That wasn’t kissing.’

‘Same principal,’ he replied, moving towards her face. ‘Mouth on skin, mouth opens and tongue touches in stroking and circular movements. You’re coming out with me tonight and remember to bring your friend Louisa.’

  ‘Why?’

‘I think you’d probably want a chaperone to stop people talking.’

‘Why don’t you ask Gina Glory Glory out instead?’

‘Because I’m asking you,’ he sighed and she noticed the sincere expression. ‘I’ve got two weeks left. We’ve spent quite a lot of time pissing each other off now, we’re getting on, I’d like to spend some time with you.’

‘As you got some boob action,’ she said, pushing him off and propping herself on her elbows. ‘You have to tell me something of interest.’

‘When you were born my father and Ethel were present,’ he said and Hatty felt her cheeks go numb. ‘What’s wrong?’

‘Oh.’ She couldn’t speak for a moment and gulped hard.

‘Hatty you okay? You look a bit surprised,’ Jake whispered, sitting up next to her.

  ‘Where was Delores?’

‘A kiss please.’ He leaned over and kissed her gently on the lips. Hatty gulped for a moment. ‘A proper one.’

‘Okay,’ she said and grabbed his head pulling him down to the grass as he glided on top of her.

Knowing she was playing with fire, Hatty was excited to feel his skin against hers but all the time, she kept her thighs firmly together knowing he was the sort of boy who could easily slip it in.

As she gently scratched up and down his back, she knew he was stiff as it was knocking against her thigh. He smelt good, feeling his hands on her breast and slowly his mouth started to travel down.

‘Keep your eyes level with mine,’ she said.

Her mouth said one thing but her back arched in anticipation on something else.

‘I’m just kissing,’ he whispered into her skin, giving her goose bumps before his mouth encapsulated her nipple and he sucked very hard as he squeezed her other breast.

Then he alternated as Hatty knew her juices were building up between her legs. She wanted to touch herself. She wanted him to touch her there but knew she couldn’t submit to him yet, though she wanted to. Slowly she rubbed his back and pulled him up so they could kiss. This time they were a little more frantic and he pulled her on top, making her straddle him as he squeezed and stroked her arse.

‘We have to stop,’ she said, breathlessly.

He pushed the top of his groin into hers then smiled.

‘If I didn’t know any better Ha Ha, I’d say you were very moist between your legs right now.’

‘Find out more information and I’ll cover your dick in it,’ she grinned, jumping up, hoping her juices weren’t going to run down her thigh.

She sat in her bedroom and wasn’t quite sure what to make of the information Jake had given her about Delores, after taking a very hot shower and playing with herself courtesy of the shower head, all the time thinking of having sex with the man.

Hatty had always thought her aunt was with her when she was born. No one said. It was just a foregone conclusion.

Fast approaching five o’clock, she got changed, realising Jake was getting good at finding out things which he managed to do in less than a week, which she never knew in all her twenty two years. Hatty checked her satchel, putting her wallet and keys into a smaller bag, then locked it away in her suitcase under the bed.

Glancing at herself in the mirror, she approved of her very long sundress skimming the floor and a white shawl wrapped around her shoulders for when it got cooler. She put her hair up as it was hot that evening and especially after Jake hinted they were going by the marina, which she knew could be windy. Leaving the house, she heard someone call her name.

  ‘Hatty!’

She looked up and Murray was standing on the front balcony with a bottle of beer in his hand. Then she noticed Frederick Isaacs sitting down by the side. Slowly she walked towards them and was greeted by the usual bright smile of Murray.

‘Twice in one week I see you looking simply stunning,’ sighed Frederick, putting his hand on his heart and tapping it. ‘Is this effort in aid of something or someone?’

‘You need to get your eyes tested and Master Jake is taking me and your daughter out this evening. I managed to prise her away from work,’ she sighed, knowing all was not well with Louisa and her married lover.

‘That daughter of mine is so ambitious,’ said Frederick proudly, giving Hatty a sympathetic look.

‘Then there’s me. Destined not to do what I want and being forced to beat children for a living,’ she huffed, looking at the pair of bemused men.

‘If you lay one finger on one of those children you’ll get into serious trouble,’ said Murray.

  ‘Really?’ smiled Hatty.

‘That’s like putting a red rag to a little bull,’ laughed Frederick, swirling his glass and letting the ice knock the side.

‘More like pig headed,’ mumbled the other man as Hatty walked up the steps.

‘Murray, we need to talk,’ she said seriously, grasping the moment.

‘Murray,’ he laughed and smiled even brighter. ‘You dropped the ‘Mister’.’

‘I don’t know why you call him ‘Mister’,’ laughed Frederick shaking his head from side to side.

‘She’s being insolent but doesn’t think I’ve figured it out,’ Murray replied and stepped forward. ‘What do you want to speak about?’

  ‘Me.’

‘What do you want to know?’ he said and she noticed Frederick momentarily frown.

‘Where was Delores when I was born?’

‘Why do you want to know that?’ he asked suspiciously.

‘I’m interested in my background,’ she said. Frederick cleared his throat. ‘Can’t I ask questions?’

  ‘What’s brought this all on?’

Murray slumped into the chair and looked at her. She examined his bronzed hairy legs and glanced at Frederick.

‘I’m sick of people speculating about me and I want to know the truth of who I am,’ sighed Hatty.

‘If you don’t know, you’re Harriet Angelica Harris and Delores is right about wasting money on your education.’

‘Why won’t anyone give me a straight answer?’

‘Sometimes there are things not worth digging up.’

‘So why did your sister in law tell me my-.’

‘Enough Hatty,’ said Murray firmly. ‘Caroline shouldn’t have spoken to you like that on Sunday and she has her own issues.’

‘Is it because you spend more time here than with Jake?’

  ‘Drop it.’

‘No I won’t!’ she snapped as Frederick shook his head from side to side. ‘I’m nearly twenty three years old and a stranger can find out more about me
than I can. That’s not right and it’s not fair, it really isn’t!’

‘Calm down Hatty,’ Frederick said gently, getting up to put an arm around her shoulder. ‘You’re a very special girl.’

‘Not if my mother had a bad heart and she died because of me, I’m not,’ she blurted out and saw the shock on Murray’s face. ‘I thought she died in child birth. I didn’t know she shouldn’t have had me!’

‘Hatty, come for a walk,’ Frederick said, turning her around as she saw Murray’s face crumble. She was led off towards the garden and felt a stab of guilt seeing him upset. ‘Is that your handy work?’

He pointed to the chopped down camellia bush.

‘Orange and peach flowers are wrong,’ she replied and looked up at him. ‘I just want to know. I have a right to know and don’t tell me I don’t. I don’t even know the surname of my father as it’s not on my birth certificate and she used her maiden name but she was married. Why?’

  ‘What’s troubling you?’

‘Jake knows about his mother, everything and I don’t know anything about mine only the snippets I’ve been told. Shit, if I’m a bastard can someone tell me!’

‘You’re extraordinary,’ the man laughed. ‘You are not a bastard. Your mother was married to a man who left her soon afterwards. She decided not to put his name on your birth certificate as he wasn’t worth knowing. Are you happy now?’

‘I know that. And he died drunk a year later in a police cell.’ She let out a big sigh then shook her head remembering something. ‘You were a police man at that time, weren’t you?’

Hatty notice Frederick’s eyes widen but then noticed Jake standing near his father talking and her tummy released tiny little butterflies.

‘I see you’re taken by Logan Junior,’ laughed Frederick, shaking his head.

‘He’s gorgeous isn’t he?’ she sighed then realised what she said. ‘I mean, he is good looking but his father is too.’

‘And his mother was very beautiful,’ said Frederick sadly. ‘It’s an unfortunate co-incident both of you lost your mothers so young.’

‘I think that’s the only think we have in common,’ she sighed. ‘Oh well, off to the marina for dinner and drinks. No doubt that slut Gina Glory Glory will be there flashing her knickers to everyone.’ Hatty let out a little laugh. ‘You must know people who work in the police force. Couldn’t you get her arrested for one evening so I can have some fun without getting insulted?’
