She replied straight away, asking him what was wrong and if he was OK.
He didn’t answer.
There were also two missed calls from Jack, who had given up on getting a reply and texted instead.
‘Got access to Freda’s safe deposit box. Contained the necklace you said Annette used to wear, plus a large knife and piece of ripped white fabric, both bloodstained. Murder weapon? Sent to forensics. Fingers crossed we get some answers and a DNA match.’
Harrison already knew what the answer would be. Freda had played her trump card.
He drove up the motorway to Harrogate, not really knowing why and what he was going to achieve, but because he had to do something.
When he got there, Freda was no longer on the ward. They had moved her into her own room.
He could smell the rot as soon as he walked in. She was decaying from the inside out, her poisonous black soul slowly devouring her body.
He walked in quietly and stood at the bottom of the bed. Her eyes were closed and he could see her breathing was shallow and laboured. She didn’t have long.
Even in her dying state, she could sense his presence.
Her eyes flickered open.
When she saw the look on his face, a smile curved her dry lips.
‘Welcome back Harrison.’
Thank You
Thank you so much for choosing Dark Order, I do hope you have enjoyed the third in the Harrison Lane series. I love writing, and I enjoy sharing Harrison’s mysteries, but they would be nothing without you, the reader. It is a roller-coaster of emotion producing a novel and after a long day when the words have not come easily, it gives me a huge boost to get a review from someone who has enjoyed reading one of my books. So, thank you, I am very grateful to every one of you who gets in contact and leaves a review on Amazon.
I also want to set the record straight and say that I went to Durham University and there were no murders while I was there. It was a fair few years ago now, I admit, but it is a lovely city and a great University; and I met the most wonderful friends who have stayed with me through the years. So, please don’t let Joseph Goode and his Moatside Monks put you off.
Finally, I thought some of you might like to know Dr Sunil Sharma’s ginger chai recipe, because it sounds so delicious. You can get a copy of the recipe along with a free Harrison Lane short story when you join my readers’ club. The story tells how Harrison first met DCI Sandra Barker, and their first case together. It’s free to join and I only tend to email once a month with book related news and offers, so you won’t be bombarded with emails. You can join my readers’ club at gwyngb.com.
Thank you again for reading Dark Order, and I hope you’ll continue the journey with Harrison in the fourth book, Holy Man.
Best wishes
Gwyn GB
P.S. The Ginger Chai recipe is courtesy of my great Durham uni friend Kamal and his wife Dipika. With thanks to them both.
