A lie. But a necessary one.
Gold glittered inside Prince Rais’s amber eye. “Then go and win me a kingdom.”
She bowed and mounted her horse with shaking hands. Prince Rais wasn’t in love with either Malik or Mina. He only loved what she represented—power.
She trotted Luna to catch up with her Fire Walker guard. Dahn nodded as he hefted the red banner high. Bahri gave her horse a friendly pat as Qareem slipped Luna a pitted date.
Amin pounded his daf drum to the march, and Marek strummed his setar.
“The sands travel with us!” Dahn called, and the crowd echoed in reply.
The sands travel with you.
Garr glanced up with a smile. It wasn’t one of fear, or malice, or mischief.
But hope.
These were her Fire Walkers and Mina would lead them with pride, even to their deaths.
