Betrayal of Trust Page 12

Looking in her direction, Javier broke the silence first. “Babe, I have to own up to what I did. I’m sorry I hurt you and cheated. There’s no excuse,” he confessed, gazing directly into her eyes.

“Javier, I love you, but I can’t do this. My ex-boyfriend cheated, and I promised myself I wouldn’t settle for being treated how someone else sees fit. You know you—”

  Boom!

Her words cut off as their car slammed into the lobby of the building; the impact forcefully whipped Blaine’s head into the dashboard. Glass projected across the interior of the vehicle, as blood oozed from the side of Javier’s head. The seatbelt prevented him from going through the windshield, but Blaine was feeling dizzy and partially incoherent. Scanning the area for help, Javier pulled at the door handle, but his door was jammed and wouldn’t open no matter how hard he tried.

Eyes glazed and ringing in her ears, Blaine saw a shadowy figure walking toward the car. Feeling her conscious slipping, Blaine called Javier with a hoarse voice, but the active fire alarm drowned her words. The shadow was now replaced by a person dressed in all black who stood at the shattered window on the passenger’s side. Blaine tried, but she couldn’t make out any features. The individual slowly squatted just before she’d gone completely unconscious…

“Damn, you’re still breathing. I’ll try again and do better next time.”
